Its good in a bright breezy short easy to complete within a few days sort of way and I've got to admit I love the outfits and used to rate Legend higher because of them zip and Allister add comedy but the game-play overall is repetitive there's way too many bosses and the levels lacked both the challenge and the atmosphere of the first 4 games though Japan was a masterpiece of level design that got the most out of the engine.

@@williamr.c.4168 I'm the opposite way if there's too many Boss fights I think it takes away from atmosphere of the Boss fight as well as the atmosphere of the levels themselves because there isn't really a build up. Though I like the TR3 system there were quite a few Boss fights in that game but it didn't feel too much because you had a Boss at the end of every area which contained at least 3 levels.

What Legend has above the others is an unrivaled outfit selection and more Tomb Raiders could do with something similar as rewards for doing special tasks instead of just 4 or 5 I mean would that really be asking for too much? Knowing the current state of things probably!

Tomb Raider Anniversary is such a great game in the series. It took the best things about Legend's play style and enhanced them, and combined that with the amazing story and level design of the original tomb raider. It's just so awesome!

Except for the fact that it isn't a great game at all in any sense! And if you think it is I feel sorry for you! They butchered half the levels and even the ones they were faithful to they sucked the color and the life out of them. Seriously take a look at it again has Anniversary got 15 levels? As it should being a remake of a game that has 15 levels no it has not it has 8 in total! Of course its not a proper remake its a hasty retelling of the original to fit the plot of Legend and Underworld but they advertised it as a remake. Whats-more they even failed to faithfully stick to the original games story-line there are whole scenes that are totally different though I do admit the the game looked nice in certain areas and anyone who has compared the gameplay of the original TR to this must note Anniversary is like an inferior version of the original game with all the atmosphere of that game missing.

It's biggest issue was the controls. I really enjoyed the game because I was able to adapt to it's faults. It could of been so much better. It's hugely unlikely but i'd love a remaster.

TR2 had the best settings variety in the whole series. Venice with its canals, pilotings boats; underwater levels 11 years before The Underworld; creepy Tibet and Chinese levels with amazing assets! That was like a breath of fresh air.

I mean its not the worst TR but its closer to being the worst TR ever made including the hand held games than it is the best and the story-line is horrible just awful. TR 2013 is far superior to underworld in every way possible but not the best TR of all time just the best Crystal Dynamics developed TR. Personally I'd put the first 4 classic games in the first 4 positions with TR4 at number 1.

Do any of you realise that the reboot is an origin story, Lara wasn't raiding tombs all her life and Tomb Raider was just the story of how she became the Tomb Raider, that's why the sequel is called Rise of The Tomb Raider. And they're both very great games, better than all their predecessors not only in terms of graphics but also the story, game play, plot and the character development.

she was more of an explorer when she was young in cambodia in TR4 and Ireland in TR5. I'm sorry but tomb raider 2013 is just what we see now a days. just companies pleasing the casuals for money instead of delivering it to the real fans. that game is an action game. no challenge, puzzles or anything. i liked playing it but it's just not a tomb raider game and a lot of franchises have been ruined because they wanted to please the masses like assassin's creed , hitman (fortunately the new one redeemed the mess that was absolution), splinter cell etc

The magic of Tomb Raider died with Underworld for me, which wasn't perfect, but still extremely satisfying to play, and it captured the spirit of a good Tomb Raider game, and Lara with her character traits intact. The two reboot sequels that followed are not Tomb Raider, where they made quick time events, shooting, and unnecessary upgrades a priority, leaving the tombs as side missions. And the fact that Lara has Eagle-vision is really stupid.

As much as I like the last two games (2013 and Rise) for what they are, you can't really compare them to the originals. The best component of the first five games (indeed, the heart of the series) was the puzzle-solving. Almost every room you walked into was a new puzzle that you had to figure out before you could advance through the game. Some of them were nothing short of fiendish, and you really had to work your brain to get through to the end. Now, 2013 and Rise are fun games, they look amazing, the characters and plot are great and the combat/stealth elements are cool. But they're extremely linear (to the point where the game is basically leading you by the hand) there's precious little puzzle-solving to be done, and a lot of it's optional. When a game called Tomb Raider presents its "tomb raiding" element as a series of optional side missions that you can stroll right past, then something's gone seriously wrong. Not that they're bad games as such - they're just not really Tomb Raider games, or at least they're not in the spirit that the franchise was built on. That said, the 2013 game might be my _second_ favourite (probably tied with Legend). But the height of the series, hands down, was Tomb Raider II.

No, no, no! Tomb Raider 2013 wasn't a bad game but it also wasn't a good Tomb Raider mainly because raiding tombs wasn't the focus of the game. It's more a 3rd person shooter with some small puzzles as an extra, so in my opinion it doesn't deserve the first spot.

I'm a big fan of The Last Revelation and I'm always surprised that It stands so low in such lists. TLR is an amazing game because: - It has a great atmosphere that really grows into you. Egypt is the best environment for Tomb Raider and the game really gives you time to get in the right mood and feel the loneliness and mystery (I'm not a big fan of the whole "world traveling" thing of other TR or Uncharted. One good setting is enough, this is why I liked The Lost Legacy). Il Cairo has the darkest levels I've ever seen in a non-horror game. - It's the most puzzle-oriented TR that I've played with a lot of (sometimes difficult) enigmas, few shootings and no real bosses (just a few puzzle bosses). - Even after many years, it has a simple but consistent and compelling story with no real blunders. I can't say the same for the other TR's of the playstation era. - It really nailed the "non linear levels" thing. Of course every puzzle has only one solution and most times there is only one way to progress but at the time it was amazing to go back and forth between levels, especially in the Alexandria of Egypt part. Backtracking is nice when there is good game design. - It was also the first TR to dig into Lara's past introducing young Lara and Werner Von Croy. He's a great character and I'm surprised that he isn't a staple in the franchise. This is why I'm waiting for a remaster that will probably never happen.

In my opinion, the Tomb Raider games ranked were as follows... 13) Tomb Raider (2013) - As someone who grew up playing Tomb Raider, the whole second reboot was a real shock to my systems. Although the graphics had improved somewhat, and the story was gripping and powerful, I felt that the game lacked any real tomb raiding opportunities, and focused more on killing enemies and getting Lara away from violent men. Don't get me wrong, however, it was a fantastic game, but it just wasn't a Tomb Raider to me. 12) Lara Croft: The Guardian of Light (2010) - The multiplayer was decent, and I did enjoy the setting and story, I just wouldn't call it a proper Tomb Raider game. (Okay, technically it isn't.) The game was rather buggy, in my opinion, but it redeemed itself with the complex puzzles and grasp of the phrase "teamwork makes the dream work". 11) Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015) - When I first heard about another Tomb Raider following the survivor timeline, I wasn't interested. But after reading in to it, I found that it would be more like the other Tomb Raiders, so I decided to buy it. But, again, I was disappointed. Not by the game-play and story, because I really enjoyed that aspect of it, but, like it's predecessor, it wasn't Tomb Raider. 10) Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007) - Many would agree with me in saying that, though it was a nice try on Crystal Dynamic's part to try and modernize the original Tomb Raider, nothing can really replace Core Design's original games. I did, however, like their adaptation of the environments (particularly Egypt) and the main antagonists. It would be quite nice to see a Tomb Raider II and III redone. 9) Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000) - Hard, hard, hard. Tomb Raider: Chronicles saw Winston and all of Lara's former acquaintances gather and discuss her various expeditions across the globe upon receiving news that Lara has died. SPOILER ALERT: She isn't dead. The game was quite glitchy, but, it wasn't the worst that I've seen. A let-down, but that was mainly because after seeing the Last Revelation, it set the bar pretty high. It didn't help that by this time, the game was lagging far behind the other games of it's time in terms of graphical quality and software. 8) Lara Croft: The Temple of Osiris (2014) - Again, we find ourselves inspecting a non-Tomb Raider game. Definitely an improvement from it's predecessor, Temple of Osiris, in my opinion, was pretty good. 4-Player co-op, I liked the Egypt setting and the characters. My only reservation was the lack of in-game story telling, all the story was told instead in that cartoon-like form. Nice to see Keeley Hawes return as Lara Croft, much better than Camilla Luddington. 7) Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999) - Last Revelation, I would first like to say, made the TR-enthusiast part of me clinically depressed for almost a full three years. I thought Lara had truly died, and I was devastated about it. But, I did like the atmosphere surrounding Egypt, in particular the mystery surrounding Seth/Set. The story was very gripping, but, honestly, the Egypt location was a bit samey (especially for the amount of levels that there were) and the franchise's outdated technology and software was beginning to show. Still an awesome game. 6) Tomb Raider: Legend (2006) - I was in awe of Legend. The gameplay was such a massive step forward, that I was both amazed, but also sad in the knowledge that we would never get classic Lara back. I liked the scenery, but I missed the badass Lara we had come to know from the past games. Crystal Dynamics really put Tomb Raider into the 21st Century properly, so Kudos to them! Keeley Hawes was also incredible as Lara Croft, and by the end of the game, I was waiting in bated-breath for this gripping mystery to be solved! 5) Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness (2003) - It was all very exciting when we first learned that there would be a "next generation" Tomb Raider, so there was a lot of build-up to it. But, as is widely known, Angel of Darkness is effectively an unfinished game, as Eidos Interactive rushed Core Design to release it, leaving bugs and glitches aplenty. I believe that AOD had a lot of potential, especially if Eidos had not only not rushed Core, but let them finish the trilogy that Angel of Darkness would start. It's a shame, because AOD has one of, if not, THE best plot of any TR game. 4) Tomb Raider I (1996) - Every gamer known about Tomb Raider 1. I was about twelve or thirteen, when I bought this game and started playing on the PS1. At that time, the graphics were revolutionary and it was awesome to have a female protagonist (something that I had been waiting for for so long!) You can NEVER defeat the classic. The game-play, the graphics, the characters, the story-line, everything about the game was just fantastic. 3) Tomb Raider II (1997) - By the time that I had finished Tomb Raider 1, I was electrified for the sequel, and it did not disappoint. I loved the gameplay, the music, Judith Gibbons as Lara Croft was just like the icing on the cake. She really brought it alive. My favourite part about it, though, was the setting. I loved the China and Tibet sections, they made me feel like I was there (as well as a pixelated video-game can) and the whole story was pretty cool. Great game :-) 2) Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008) - What can I say about Underworld? Incredible. More than words can express. The gameplay was brilliant, the plot couldn't have been any better, and the character's portrayals were just brilliant all-round. But, the best part was the scenery. Thailand was just the most beautiful place in the whole of gaming history in my opinion, closely followed by the Arctic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Southern Mexico, might I go on? It was nice to see the return of the serious Lara Croft from the first generation, and I also liked the dark plot-type, a serious contrast from Legend and Anniversary. 1) Tomb Raider III (1998) - So, there you have it! My all time favourite Tomb Raider would have to go to TRIII. This game was always going to win it, as it is the one that I liked the most. Adventures of Lara Croft was the Underworld of its time. Environments were bewildering, with so many places to explore (I loved the South Pacific and Antarctica levels). I also liked the interactive map, where you could choose where you wanted to go next. Way ahead of it's time. Monumental game. There was nothing I would change about it, the plot was totally enthralling, perhaps it's more of a nostalgia thing than anything else, but it is definitely my favourite. This is just my personal opinion, of the best Tomb Raider games. I don't dislike any Tomb Raider games, there are just some that I feel are better than others, and some that aren't even Tomb Raiders, but still great games. And if anyone is still reading (I've probably bored most of you to sleep) It'd be really interesting to hear yours. :-)

That's not it. First of all i find it "funny" that Chronicles is even on the top ten, since it was only made because of Core's contract that they have to deliver a game every year. They wanted to have AOD just after Tr 4 and chronicles is the result of that stupidness. Then i find it funny how Tr 3 is better than Tr 4, since Tr 3's story is a bad joke and compared to Tr 4 its level design, Atmosphere and "open-world" feeling is just not as good. Core aimed Tr 4 to be the least linear and longest Tomb Raider btw. The temple of osiris is not even a Tomb Raider game, i know they said in the beginning that they included it anyway, but to be honest, it is extremly short, has a bad story and even a lack of gameplay compared to guardian of light. Legend to be number 5 is also a bit questionable, since it is just an average game that took a lot of elements from the Tomb Raider that core delivered. It was a nice comeback, and i like it's humor , but underworld made the feeling of lonelyness and solving puzzles, with just a few enemies in large atmospheric places, much better. Tomb Raider 2 to be the number 2 is a joke to me, personally. It is the least atmospheric game in the whole series, it is boring and extremly linear. Also it's tolerance to fight as many enemies as possible is also a down to me. That is a personal opinion but valid. TR 2013 as the number 1 is actually a nice idea. I love the game and it is pretty reasonable but even there i have to say, that it is (next to rise) the least game in the series that people associate with Tomb Raider and Lara Croft and as a game itself its great but it has absolutely nothing that Tomb Raider ever stood for and therefore shouldnt really be on this list. So in the end im not crying about, that my favorite (underworld) is not number 1 but everything about it is bothering me. Explained enough?

SkyOut Tomb Raider 2013 initially had failed to reach its targeted goals and only recently got an overwhelmingly review on steam about a week ago. The old games were way more successful upon release and even had an affect on gaming as a whole which is why the old games are so well known in gaming history. The new games after the reboot aren't anything special or iconic and have literally stripped what Lara Croft was initially known for. Regardless of whether it was her before becoming who she was meant to be, all the things that were Lara Croft have gone. Now the series is just some typical survival game.

Yes I know how steam works, I have steam myself, what I am saying, is that it only just recently reached overwhelmingly positive reviews overall. Before it was on very positive. I don't understand what you mean by "If the new games aren't iconic then so aren't the old ones". The old and new Tomb Raider games are two completely different series under the same name. The old games are iconic because they had an affect on gaming, especially with female protagonists. The new Tomb Raider games haven't. Yeah sure they are popular but they aren't super remarkable games. Normally I would be fine of them temporarily stripping her of whats iconic to her, however they have confirmed that they won't be bringing back things such as her iconic look through out the old games and the most iconic of all her pistols. Now shes just some generic female character with a bow, how many other female characters in video games have their main weapon as a bow? Its repetitive and tiring to see and its a shame especially considering the ending to 2013 that she wont be using her pistols. Not only that but there are a lot of old Tomb Raider fans that have been supporting the entire series and the most they could have done was keep her pistols but nope, they just gave a big fuck you too all of them and started something completely new and different. The point being is that I don't think the new games are super great because not only is it something completely different, but there are aspects of the game that feel are super generic. The only thing currently that is interesting is Lara's mental state throughout the two games and now the new one.

All the hunting and Bow, Arrow Crafting just dosent seem tomb raider to me. They aren't bad games by any means, but they aren't "tomb raider" games if you know what i mean.

I loved exploring the mansion on the older games, especially finding the secret rooms and unlocking the four wheeler on tomb raider two. Havent been able to do that stuff for a long time in the series.

For the people that are pissed off that the reboot is at #1, I'm just going to point out that it's the second best-rated Tomb Raider game on metacritic, only behind the very first one. Everything else is lower. No need to be overly defensive and try to pass your personal opinion off as fact. Just because you think one way doesn't mean that everyone else does.

It's far from a bad game but it's far from a tomb raider game .Its like a jurassic park movie lacks dinosaurs , they show u 2hrs fossils and eggs and lecture how they created dinosaurs and call the movie jurassic park origins .Tr2013 is one of the best games I played that year but it's tooooo different from every other games in the franchise.Too different to be the same.

My favorite's always gonna be Underworld 😍 I love the size of the scenery and the beauty of them, also the level of kickass Lara's got is spectacular 😍 and right now, I'm liking ROTTR more than the original (second) reboot. anyway, Lara is always gonna be Lara, and for that simple reason I'll love her forever no matter what 😳

My favorites from the 3 eras are: TR III: It was the first videogame I've ever played and it is really diverse. TR Anniversary: This is how you do a remake, it's the perfect combination of 1st and 2nd era of TR games. Shadow of the tomb raider: Although I think the story is a bit rushed and Rise had a better development of events, Shadow is the definitive 3rd era experience.

Adding stealth in Tomb Raider 2013 was a great idea. The characters when they died in the cutscenes kinda felt like playing the Wolverine for instance the loved ones always dies because of his ability

Tomb Raider AOD had such potential... But it was such a disaster. When they presented the game in 2003, the presenter himself was cussing at the glitches. It had a lot of good music but it wasn't enough to save it...

Why am I not surprised at the nr 1 pick? No, I don't agree with your list, at all! This is my top 10 (in order of preference): 1) Tomb Raider (1996) - Mostly biased, because it was my first experience with TR. It was dark, it was creepy, it was silent, isolated and atmospheric, and still manages to jumpscare me at times. A true Tomb Raider experience. 2) TR IV: The Last Revelation - IMO has the best story, and mixes better the characterization with the main plot. It has awesome puzzles, beautiful locations. The final battle sucks, though. To me, this one is the best in the entire series. 3) TR Anniversary - A great mix of old and new. The new puzzles are great and creative, while keeping the nostalgia at the same time. I only don't like the way they butchered the story to fit the trilogy, and Natla's new design. It's atmospheric, but misses the charm and creepiness of the original. 4) TR II - I only played it, once, but it had some great locations, and has the best final battle. Too many human enemies, however. 5) TR Legend - Fun, but too short, and gets tiresome quickly.. 6) TR Chronicles - Fun. Had some cool levels. The nonskippable cutscenes kill me, though. 7)TR III - It annoys me, for some reason (maybe because I kept getting lost?). The alien spaceship is the only thing I like. I guess my PS3 glitching the key items didn't really help, either. I'll need to replay it again, one other time. 8) Tomb Raider (2013) - It would have been the lowest if the combat wasn't fun (the bow, especially). Lara being dumb as a rock, Lara becoming a baddass through trauma, which is a lazy and boring way to do it, stereotypical and forgettable characters, too easy even on hard, goddawful multiplayer, optional tombs, repetition with the bloody explosions and everything cracking, the goddamn shaky cam that almost makes me pass out, a nonsensical plot and setting, lying premise, etc., etc., etc. 9) TR Underworld - It had everything to be good, but it feels too empty. Mostly just pretty scenery, not much to do that made me feel like it was worth it. 10) So, I take it you didn't like Angel of Darkness? I never played it, though.

I got to say the Legend Anniversary and Underworld trilogy... It was a big change with lara not moving like a robot. And also liked the fact that there were actually about the same story (if you skip the fact that Anniversary was all about introducing you Natla).
