Man..grew up fishing for Stripers and Bluefish up north in Ct. 95% of the time was spent using topwater!! Moved to North Carolina and have been here now for 20 plus years. In Raleigh and travel down to the coast at least 4-5 times a month. Carried over that love for topwater and crush speckled trout and Reds year round..love it❤

Nice to hear personal accounts like this one to inspire others to use topwaters for alpha predators

Great stuff.. C. A. I love topwater for big bass

I love your analogy captain. CA. I think snook are a lot like bass ,when they just aren’t biting, ain’t hungry.you gotta make,em angry. I try to apply stuff you say to my neck of da,woods . tight,lines ✌️💙😄

Jiggerpoling is illegal for a reason. The old timers in Florida used to use a long calcutta or bamboo rod with 3' of line and a noisy lure. They stood on low bridges or docks and did figure 8's or circles and made a lot of noise until a pissed off snook hit it. It must have been effective because it's been illegal for a long time.

Great advice. Went out in the wind in Tampa Bay and got some great trout on a popper with rattles. One trout was over 25-inches my PB. Thank you.

Great video. Love too water fishing. Short 40lb leader really helped with the front hook catching the line
@flatsclasschartersАй бұрын
Yes shorter and stiffer is best in this case 😎

I first heard that great advice about waiting to strike until you feel the weight of the fish on topwater when I was very young. This was in the pre-internet days so I probably got it from watching an early Saturday morning fishing show on ESPN. It always stuck with me.

It’s still the rule my friend, appreciate the quality share!

Capt CA what do you think about jointed/ "broken back" type baits? I used to troll jointed Bomber Long A's for kingfish and cast the same lure for snook and they worked on both. But I don't see many people using them now, and I don't remember hearing you talk about them. Maybe it's a good subject for a video? I think they're versatile because they can be twitched on top or jerked hard or just reeled in.
@flatsclasschartersАй бұрын
I will take this under consideration… but I know it works just not many lure options in that category
@fishingwithdrupydog5547Ай бұрын
I would like to hear the different times where you would use a top water walk the dog as you say, or a top water popper type lure? It’s funny to me on both. I never think that it’s gonna work until it does.’ thanks captain CA.

great video… I use Mono as a leader but the other day a fellow layer, sorry fisherman told me that Flouro is better because is transparent to the fish eye!. I believe that fluorocarbon stretches a bit, is that true, should we use Mono or Flouro? Thanks.
@flatsclasschartersАй бұрын
With such short leaders it likely doesn’t matter that much which material you use. But I use mono leaders for topwater 90% of the time.

How do you deal with areas with floating seaweed or grass that’s always get caught in the lure during the retrieve?
@flatsclasschartersАй бұрын
You can employ a soft plastic lure (Zman Pop Shadz) that can be rigged weedless on an EWG rigging hook. Works awesome in grass out surface conditions
@CostalRunnerАй бұрын
Use inline hooks! Treble hooks catch grass. If you have huge bunches of seaweed, then you’re kinda out of luck.
@Crescenzo52Ай бұрын
I’ll take a look at both of these! Thanks for the tips!!
@comfortablynumb9342Ай бұрын
I'd skip hard top water lures in really weedy situations.
@waynegoldworthy70Ай бұрын
I like the “now no longer manufactured “ ZMan grass kicker on a weedless unweighted chin lock hook for floating grass. It plops and spits well; I’ve caught some really nice specs this way.

What brand topwaters do you Think is best?
@comfortablynumb9342Ай бұрын
Different brands make lots of different patterns. Some are great, some suck from the same brand. The Heddon Zara Spook and Spook Jr are the classic "walk the dog" type. Or the Salt Strong Moonwalker is similar and good. Those come with or without rattles for rough and calmer days.
@BoatdudefrontrunnerАй бұрын
Yeah. I have been using miro lures

I personally am a Mirrolure fan but there is a plethora of choices on the market its just personal preferences

why not fluorocarbon leader
@flatsclasschartersАй бұрын
If the leader is short enough it doesn’t matter… but mono is what most prefer
@GBFishing386Ай бұрын
I prefer mono with topwaters because it will stay on top of the water vs. fluorocarbon because of its buoyancy. Fluorocarbon on anything subsurface.
@bi0ticoutdoors102Ай бұрын
You’ll want that 40lb for when a big snook engulfs it.
