Fairy Tale: I bought this game due to Sam's chamioning, but it never caught on, and was hard to learn. Now I don't even try to get it played. Say Anything: Is still a top 5 party game for me, and is my 44th favorite game of all time. But I recently bought another game very similar which seems to be doing well and that's Heebie Jeebies. Very similar in play and style. I have never played Apples to Apples. Game of Thrones: Once when I was at a game store with friends I pointed this game out and said it got great reviews. Low and behold my friend bought it without me looking more into it, and he wanted me to teach it to everyone. It never happened and never got played. Love Letter: Batman is a game I bought based on Tom's review, and particularly this edition. My oldest son loves it and it gets played once in awhile, but is no favorite of mine, nor do I hate it. He is a big Batman fan. My top 5 turkeys: 5. Ticket to Ride: I will play this but never request it, because I just about burned myself out playing this on the Xbox. 4. Deadwood: I championed this game, and still maintain its a great early entry for worker placement games. But I have seriously cooled down on it. I don't bring it out any more. 3. Werewolf: I have taught this game to many people, and my family still likes it, and it may be my oldest son's favorite game. But I am beginning to burn out on it. 2. Battlestar Galactica: Right after I bought an expansion for this I realized that the game is too long for what it is. I have not played my copy, but have played the game 2 times and enjoyed it. But it is way too long! 1. Catan: This has been a game I have been burned out on for quite some time. Like Ticket to Ride, I played this on Xbox way too much, much more than Ticket to Ride. Just 2 weeks ago I taught this to my oldest son and he loves it. My wife already likes it, and its also a favorite of my Mom. I told my family I will play this 1 more time with all of them, and then I am done. Grrr this game gets on my impatient side.

Sam says that it's too hard for new players to play as the Ghost in Mysterium, but I have yet to see that as the case with people I've taught. Heck, my 8 year old son plays as the ghost all of the time and though we've never won as such, we've actually gotten close. He does just about as well as anyone else 3 to 4 times his age. It just comes down to taste and those you play with, as is true with any game.
@DarkseidTCG6 жыл бұрын
Patrick Doss my kids do very Well as the ghost. They do better as the ghost than as the psychic.
@miketaylor306 жыл бұрын
If you've never won "as such" then I think he probably isn't playing the ghost all that effectively. Not to say you're not having fun, but it's pretty clear he isn't doing about as well as an adult, where your win ratio would be much better. It also sounds like he's not a new player... he's played as the ghost multiple times. So I think Sam's point still stands.
@spiderfingers866 жыл бұрын
Mike Taylor the adults are just as bad lol.
@HeadCannonPrime6 жыл бұрын
I think it depends how far away they were from winning. If they just didn't get the very last clue, that can happen a lot . If half the players never got beyond the second set of clues, that would be problematic.
@StyxTBuferd5 жыл бұрын
I agree, I have no idea what am is getting on about here. Deception is more stressful since it's easier for the ghost to completely mess up the round (since it's a deduction game), and I've found that a ghost will often sit down and think to put their piece in something that feels relevant as opposed to thinking "well if it were X I would do something else". Mysterium is more straightforward and less stressful, and yet I'd say the ghost has more influence over the game in that one. Additionally I don't see Mysterium being "killed" by Deception. Aside from the silent protagonist role, both games use very different parts of the brain. Mysterium for me works with that Dixit style thinking of "how is this artwork relevant?" as opposed to just some direct deduction. Deception's deduction is usually very easy by comparison unless the ghost is terrible- games always end either with a quick victory or a drawn out loss for the detectives.

I get Tom dumping X-Wing. Although the joy of it was that it was a simple 2 player game and as such, was fun, so why not just keep the base game for the occasional fight? I am keeping Armada but in a similar way, i am VERY picky about what I buy. I bought it because it is big ships and I like the feeling of huge juggernauts trying to move sluggishly in space and occasionally pounding on each other. That is being changed by constant upgrade cards and I am hence very picky about what I add. That way, the game has stayed like-able for me However, I think my main problem is that Star Wars games are now ubiquitous. I am beginning to feel like the Rebel Alliance because everywhere I look, there is an Imperial Star Wars game bearing down on me. It feels like my childhood memories of a film and comic that I loved have been taken, stamped on and spat out by a factory of robots and marketing men. I think I am Star War-ed out.

Robinson Crusoe: The game is a slog and then just keeps beating you down. I am at a point I never want to play it. Dragonfire: I liked it initially but it is too punishing. The students seem to pick up on the game faster when I include the expansion (I'll never teach the game without it again), and just last night the person who crossed the finish line came in third, because someone else leveraged the crew in their ship extremely well.

Honest truth: I'm selling my XWing stuff too, but I'm keeping my Armada stuff. XWing has gotten tto the point where the FAQ is longer than the rulebook, and there are too many releases per year. I feel that Armada is a much better watched game by the OP gods.

Have to agree with Adam French -- Descent and Battlestar Galactica, among others on the list, may be fading somewhat, but they're not 'turkeys'. A turkey is an out and out loser. A great video nonetheless, but I think the title is misleading.
@scarrow6 жыл бұрын
For me Battlestar Galactica has no effective replacement. There are games that offer one aspect or another (blind bidding with a possible traitor, cooperative gameplay, deduction), but Battlestar Galactica combines all of these, and is a good choice for an epic gaming night where you don't mind blocking out the time for a single title. I sorely wish it was still in print or ever likely to be in print again.

I wouldn't use the term Turkey to describe games you lost interest in but... Sentinels of the Multiverse - The more characters they added, the more complex they tried to make them. The game just turned into a massive headache trying to keep track of everything. Even worse, some heroes need to have several cards in play to do much of anything. There are plenty of boss/environment cards that would destroy your cards. Lost count of how many times I played more complex characters that basically sat there and took damage all game because they couldn't do anything.

Regarding Sam's choice of Mysterium, he said he was 'no longer comfortable with the theme', is this because it's set at a séance and deals with the supernatural? If he did mean that, does that not make it a little difficult for him to objectively review any game with a similar theme? Just curious...
@JeramyWare6 жыл бұрын
Andy Solts I don't feel like they make a huge attempt to be particularly objective in their reviews. Like most reviews it's a lot of opinion, and I think they are very good about saying when they don't like something simply because of their opinion based on the subject matter.

@corrado89556 жыл бұрын
Dead of Winter is just much less interesting than BSG. The crossroads system is really great, but it only really triggers only a couple of times a game. The rest of the game is a pretty boring "draw cards from a deck" game. BSG is worth the extra time investment for the tension and excitement it bring throughout. Your turns actually feel meaningful and the inevitable betrayals can often be shocking. Dead of Winter has just never brought that level of excitement in the half a dozen plays I have played.

What a weird definition of what a boardgame turkey is. Films, teater plays or books that are defined as a turkey are a failure or unsuccessful. Whether they are competently made or not like "The Room" og last years "The Mummy". The only example that I'm able to come up with now is Seafall. It had everything going for it but just tanked, next to its expectation.
@KabukiKid6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is a pretty odd usage of "turkey," but it is what Tom has used for ages now. It used to be something he and Joe Steadman would do on the Dice Tower podcast. They had a segment where they talked about their "turkeys," which were games that have fallen in their eyes over time for whatever reason. They also would talk about their "kangaroos," which meant a game that was initially not liked or seen as so-so and then "jumped forward" and became a well loved game. heh Yeah, Tom is a nut. ;-)

I’ve enjoyed it, though I think it’s like Love Letter where it’s a tiny game that plays best with a local meta.

Tom, you need to do the Tzolk'in re-try just in case before you do the games you like better list you mentioned at the end.

Ron Frazier Oh god, Boss Monster! I played it a few times over the course of a couple, bought everything for it, then I realized a few months ago, "I kind of actively hate this game." Marvel Legendary is still amazing though. It's been my number one for years and it's not moving anytime soon.

Tom is right about BSG. Never understood the hype anyway.

I think the Descent journeys in the Dark is still a great game, because there is no other game like it specifically. The story, the xp system, the over lord cards, and the monster to hero racio. It takes less time to play them Does and Sorcery, less learning curve, and it isn't overly complex.

Mini hands down, my top Turkey game was Shadowrun Crossfire for the reasons Zee mentioned. It went from a 9 rating to being sold.

That's how I feel about Dragonfire, despite Zee's assurance it is better (it's not).
