I've been interested in this since Quinn's review on it, so I'm glad they have a regular edition! Minor nitpick though as an American: Area 51 is in Nevada, not New Mexico :). Roswell, New Mexico is the site of a purported alien crash landing in the 50s, and so it plus Area 51 is famous in alien conspiracy theories. Different places though!

Matt is as wonderful as ever. Can’t wait for his review of the TI4 expansion. I am having doubts between TI3, TI4, eclipse 1, and eclipse 2, anyone mind to share their thoughts? I don’t really feel like spending 130 of my m eurochips, and the older versions cost so much less secondhand.... I don’t like wanting stuff because of mere anxiousness to own shiny things, tbh

I've played ti3, ti4, eclipse 1 and just received eclipse 2. My advice...buy any. Ti3 and eclipse have been solid games for a decade. Later versions may improve and tweak but their previous versions are still great games in their own right. Personally I much prefer Ti3 with its expansion modules to my plays of Ti4. As for eclipse its the minimal player count that makes it a keeper for me, whereas Twilight imperium needs 5+ players to really bring the space opera aspect alive - when space poop hits the fan 4+ hours in, that's when Twilight Imperium shines! If you want a clean 4x game I can't recommend Star Trek Ascendancy enough, whether you like trek or not. The organic exploration and relative combat system come together to make a great game and its relatively cheap (3 player only base game - going up to about 8 with expansions).

@@PrimatoFortunato sorry. FYI. My complete TI3 cost me perhaps £100 (2nd hand). I've played it at least 7 times over the last 5 years (4-8 players) each game taking a full day (afternoon into evening - c. 8 hours). So that works out at a "full day" gaming with my friends at about £14/day. We still talk about certain events/wars/betrayals years later. Way cheaper than doing pretty much anything else with my friends and we all got to hang out and still feel like we achieved something! That's what most of these 4x type games promise, but just be cautious with your friend(s) who doesn't like being randomly dumped on by game mechanics/events/draws at times. 4x games tend to rely on a theatrical/roleplay/narrative structure. They're certainly not logical or systematic things - and much like life they are not fair or generally very good at rebalancing themselves mid-late game, but that's where the story lies!
