Open Water is based on a true story, Tom and Eileen Lonergan who were left behind by their dive boat. They were never seen again.

Yeah, they disappeared (presumed dead, of course, due to either dehydration, drowning, or death by shark attack) after having been abandoned by their dive tour boat that had taken them scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. I remember that news story and 'Open Water' was an excellent movie.

Thanks! Certainly be checking the top two in the list as I don't believe I saw either (may have but re-watch is fine too). I wish I could include some of the bangers I was watching during this era but my memory is shot. I was knocking out '7 weekly and 2 overnight DVDs on rental every week for a fair few years in the 00's. I was a Horror addict in a very literal sense. Helped with my anxiety and PTSD issues for whatever reasons.

3:00 Not a 2000s movie, but I highly recommend 'The Edge' (1997) starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin, Harold Perrineau, and Elle Macpherson, etc. about men surviving a plane crash in a remote area of Alaska while trying to survive, make their way home, and evade a Kodiak bear (played by Bart the Bear) stalking them during the entire journey. Plus, it has a great score by legendary composer, Jerry Goldsmith. :)

I've never heard another person mention "Anatomy" before! I rented that movie back in '01 or so, and then bought a copy on VHS. Franka Potente starred in the German films, international hit action/romance movie "Run Lola Run" in 1999 and psychological thriller "The Princess and the Warrior", before crossing over into American films, like "Blow" with Johnny Depp in 2000 and "The Bourne Identity" in 2002. There was a sequel to "Anatomy" made, right after the first one, but it wasn't as good.

I clicked on this video because I saw Baghead in the thumbnail. I've always been fascinated with the Mumblecore movement of the early 2000's, which seems to be the last major indie film movement in America, at this point. Baghead is an offshoot of the Mumblecore movement, falling into the subgenre of Mumblegore. The biggest filmmaker of that movement is probably Ti West, with his movies like House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. A big part of both of these movements is the cross over of actors and directors, with directors sometimes appearing as actors in other filmmakers movies, like Gerwig in Baghead. I associate You're Next with Mumblegore as well, as it features Joe Swanberg and Ti West in minor rolls, and was written by Simon Barrett who is also associated with Mumblecore. I also wanted to mention my favorite aspect of Cry_Wolf is the whole movie feels like a fan fiction written by a teenager, with the main character Dodger being an impossibly cool Mary Sue. It's funny to me in a way, but it doesn't take away from the film over all.

It kinda gave me Saltburn vibes in a wierd way but with the 2000s campiness, I'm obsessed with it, one of my favourite horror movies of 2000s for sure (my absolute favourite tho but not underrated would be Triangle 2009 which I also recommend, this one I recommend going blindly for full enjoyment)

Awesome selection! The Cursed is strangely amazing despite how much of a train wreck it is. If you get the chance check out SS DoomTrooper released back in 2006. I saw it on Syfy as a kid and loved it despite how bad it is. It’s low budget, horrific cgi, terrible accents and goofy Nazi villains. It’s like Dirty Dozen mixed with Wolfenstein. Kinda like Overlord from 2018, but not nearly as well made. I found it really funny though and fun so you might like it.

This list is definitely giving me some good recommendations like Cursed, stay alive, and shrooms lol but I got a few for you One hour photo is a great thriller starring Robin Williams in one of the few times he plays a bad guy! The movies okay but he’s the reason to watch! Shadow of the vampire is all about the filming of Nosferatu and stars willem dafoe as Max Schreck, the actor who played count orlock in the og classic! It kinda messes with reality and plays up the whole story of schreck actually being a vampire! Queen of the damned is a fun rock musical vampire movie! It’s also got a soundtrack that’s basically all 2000s nu-metal! It’s so awesome if you’re into that stuff like I am lol and it’s so cool to see Aaliyah being the queen herself! RIP Thank you again for the awesome underrated horror list! Can’t wait for the next one!

It’s a very intense and sad watch but I think it’s worth checking out. My favorite from the 2000s is a film called Slashers (2001) by Maurice Devereaux...It's shot like a reality tv show, but we see the commercial breaks, and to my knowledge, its the only one shot as though you are watching an episode of the game show, as opposed to watching a movie about a game show...

I've seen a lot of the movie you mentioned. Cry Wolf, Cherry Falls, Cursed, and Breed, definitely underrated. Cry Wolf is cool. Cherry Falls could have been so much better if it was left alone and released as the R-rated movie it was supposed to be. Sadly, the studio pushed and pushed for a PG-13 rating, so it got hacked up. Cursed, as I remember the story, fell victim to so much studio interference as well. It was originally supposed to be R- Rated, and I think the storyline was a bit different originally. The studio pushed for rewrites because they didn't think the original version would do well. Then, more rewrites and cuts to make it PG-13 and give more attention to certain story beats and pull away from others. Then they didn't like this, didn't like that, rewrites, rewrites. What a fucking shit show Wes had to deal with. The studios are still pushing the whole PG-13 horror bullshit. Get then teens in the theaters. And studios complain that their adult audiences aren't showing up. Well, give us a true adult horror movie, and we will. Adults want the intense plot, the gore, the smart, well written characters. A real gross out scary AF good time. Oh Dark One, I don't know if you realized this. There is a sequel to Anatomy. Yep, Anatomy 2. It's also on Tubi. Thank you for this stroll down memory lane of early 2000's horror. Much love from Pennsylvania.❤🦇❤️🦇❤️🦇❤️🦇❤️🦇

Ill throw in a Quebec movie from 2003. Sur le seuil (Evil Words) and it's gloriously early 2000s in style. Creepy cut scenes with industrial music in the background that make no sense with the story.

In my humble opinion psychedelic drugs are one of the most under-utilized things in the horror genre. The only genuinely great one that I can think of that actually has them as its main theme is Altered States from 1980. After that it's either movies with very brief psychedelic scenes like Midsommar, or just cheap schlock like Shrooms. Where's all the good "bad trip horror" hiding?

_Blue Sunshine_ (1977) _Enter the Void_ (2009) _A Field in England_ (2013) _Climax_ (2018) _Synchronic_ (2019) _Brain Damage_ (1988) _Naked Lunch_ (1991) (These last two are a bit more symbolic, featuring 'trip'-inducing entities and/or fictional substances which may be seen as metaphors for hallucinogens).

@@HauntedHippie You do that! I would have loved to make one myself if I had become a filmmaker like I dreamed of, but I'll be looking forward to what you can come up with the concept 😄

@@bryangarcia5599 oh yeah, I had completely forgotten about Blue Sunshine! A Field in England was good, but I don't remember if they took any drugs in that one, I recall that it was trippy just in a stylistic way. And I personally don't necessarily count Naked Lunch as a horror film, eventhough it was directed by David Cronenberg. But all the other ones I have not yet seen, thanks for the recommendations!

Hey Haunted Hippie would it be an original story concept if I created a horror movie about Michael Jackson fighting against zombies during the zombie apocalypse?
