Dead Alive/Braindead from 1992 is my pick for the most underrated horror movie of the 90s. It was directed by none other than the legend himself, Peter Jackson. And yes, I am aware that the film in question is a comedy/fantasy/horror genre, but horror films have their own subgenres. Splatter is one of the subgenres of horror.

Great video. I'm a lifelong horror fan, born in '74. I was in my mid teens to mid-20's in the '90's, and I saw all of these titles back in the day. I am the BIGGEST John Carpenter fan, and trust me when I say that his '90's output was typically met with abject derisive criticism; it's nice to see his '90's work starting to get a positive re-evaluation. Also, Bad Moon's director Eric Red did a 'Mad Scientist' horror film in 1991 titled Body Parts which is pretty phenomenal.

One film I really liked from 1992 that nobody talks about is Dr. Giggles! I can't even remember where I found the VHS tape, but it stars Holly Marie Combs from Charmed (the original) and since I loveeee her I picked it up. It was actually really good and so fun! If I remember correctly, the effects are done really well and there are some creative deaths! You should definitely check it out!😊

i vouch for this! early 90s had a bad run of crap horror movies until this movie. it wasnt epic like scream but it was good enough to really stand out. (where's the sequel?!) it had crazy gross/nasty deaths and a fun villain. it's been on bluray/1080 for a while now. usually in the bargain bins. the dvd cost mad money since it was a limited run and out of print shortly afterwards. this was the best slasher movie from 1988 to 1995. literally. dark times.

To me, Bad Moon’s opening scene edges out the opening from AAWiL. The way the OG werewolf tore into the lead’s GF was legitimately jarring in its brutality. It’s holding her against its body and is just ripping into her as she’s screaming. Then, when she finally dies, it slams her body headfirst into the ground. Werewolf then turns towards the main character, who proceeds to blow its head off with a shotgun. But, not before getting infected. Opening was short, brutal and to the point. Too bad the rest of the movie couldn’t match it.

Fun list! 90s has a lot of good under the radar horror but also a lot of genuinely bad horror flicks and bad films with horror elements lol.. Yes Bad Moon is pretty solid! It's definitely a quality werewolf film.. you can tell they cared when making it.. Bad Moon's star Mariel Hemingway is great in Star 80 (1983) with Eric Roberts, not horror but great stuff.. I always mention Freeway so I won't go there lol, but Fear (1996) with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg is classic.. Wahlberg is legit terrifying in it although I always get a kick out of his performance.. it was his breakthrough movie performance, even before Boogie Nights, even though he was already very famous from music and modeling.. it's kinda polarizing, but it's still classic horror in my book.. and it definitely feels forgotten these days despite having a cult following.. Shoutout to The Crush (1993).. there's no denying it's an "icky" film, but it's charming because of Alicia Silverstone and Carey Elwes.. it's more thriller but has true horror elements throughout.. I missed the boat on SpongeBob so I always think of Clancy Brown from Shawshank Redemption, but yes he's nuts in Pet Sematary Two lol, really good performance from him!

Ah yes, The Scooby-Doo Project. I recommend Dr Giggles. He's an underrated slasher icon, the guy had more body count than Jason, Freddy & Michael had in their debuts. I enjoyed the 2 Dentist films as well. Pet Sematary 2 is pretty decent and Clancy Brown is fun to watch. Species 2 is a decent one as well. Good effects and also some, well, not-so-good CGI. I would also include 2 creature features: The Relic & Deep Rising.

The Dentist is one of those films that I just can't do because the mouth stuff is terrible lol I watched it when I was younger, but on seeing clips, its just not worth the rewatch. Mine in NO particular order: -The Guardian ( I need to revisit this one, but all I remember about this one is babies being eaten by a tree. I loved it when I was a kid. Probably shouldn't have been watching it, haha) -Tremors (Is this underrated? I don't see people talk about it much anymore) Kevin Bacon is a national treasure in the horror genre. -The People Under The Stairs -Sleepwalkers -Dr. Giggles(My love for Holly Marie Combs started here) -Stir of Echoes -Demonic Toys -Dolly Dearest -Pet Semetary 2 -CopyCat (More of a thriller than a horror, but no one talks about it) Jack Frost still goes down as one of the worst movies I've ever seen and you couldn't pay me to go back, lol We absolutely did do a live stream on it and I do believe I tolerated it better with the wine, but still, no. This list made my day since I sent Kylie my old DVDs of Idle Hands and The 4th Floor. The 4th Floor was a made-for-HBO movie and is kind of a poor man’s The Tenant (the final film in Polanski’s Apartment Trilogy, following Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby). I also really enjoyed Bad Moon and recommend checking out the director’s cut as it runs a few minutes shorter and excises the worst CGI elements. If you’re looking for a good Jamie Lee Curtis 90s horror/thriller, Blue Steel is very good. And keeping with the 1999 theme, The Astronaut’s Wife with Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron is extremely underrated. Since the comments are littered with arguments as to what defines underrated, I cut Cure, Thesis, Dead Alive, Funny Games, Ringu and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare from my list for being too well known. 1. Bloody Angels (only 157 total logs on Letterboxd) 2. Ghostwatch 3. Shallow Grave 4. Dead Again 5. Nightwatch (I prefer the original, but the remake isn’t bad) 6. The Day of the Beast 7. Lisa 8. The Quiet Family 9. The Vagrant 10. The Guard Underground

I was born in 87 and the 90's was awesome. The 2000's were my teen years. I was 13 years old when 9/11 happened. I remember waking up, seeing it on TV [before the towers fell] and going to middle school and watching it on the TV in every single class. Everybody was stuck to the TV during every single class, no homework. The only "homework" we did was in art class and generally....I have bashed the 2000's a lot through the years. I even remember as a 13, 14, 15, 16 year old going "Man, most of everything sucks now. Especially horror movies." Last year, I did see footage from "what it was like in high school in the 2000's" and nostalgia flood. That is EXACTLY what it was like in the 2000's. Anyway, in my mind 2000's horror sucks but it really began in the late 90's to be honest. My favorite go to decades are of course the 70's and 80's. 90's comes in third. 2000's horror to me seemed like a total shift from everything I loved in the 90's and while I was using the internet to discover more and more movies from the 70's and 80's. Playing catch up to the older generation - the rest of the horror fandom was getting into paranormal movies, found footage, etc. Which I despised and my general view of the 2000's and horror was basically what this MTV guy said about MTV at the end of 1999 and the early 2000's before it completely switched to reality TV. He's talking about Woodstock 1999 for context. "it seemed like their reputation changed, their brand changed. It seemed like the viewer had dropped 5 years over night. where it had once been a kind of countercultury kind of place....suddenly it's like; there's Nick Jr. Nickelodeon, and MTV." "They[woodstock 1999 audience] were mad at us because we TOOK THEIR MTV AWAY AND GAVE IT TO THEIR LITTLE SISTER...WE WERE IN TROUBLE." I disliked that horror had gone mainstream. Was all glossy, models were in horror movies now. Horror felt like it had it's exploitation roots taken away. Sanitized, neutered for a mainstream audience. Plus you had the rise of the PG13 horror movie and the aftermath of Columbine where they neutered films down to less violent. Perfect example being Scream 3. I hated the rise of reality TV. Only very recently have I finally admitted "despite the 2000's being a terrible decade....I do have nostalgia for it and in some ways it was awesome. The internet before it went mainstream. Eminem in the early 2000's. Hollywood undead. The video games, my gf, American pie 2. A few good horror movies that came out. A few. Getting into Marilyn Manson and a ton of other bands in the 2000's." So I have a love/hate relationship with the 2000's. Stir of echoes. Easily one of the best 90's movies and my original view on the movie was like most people. "oh it's a sixth sense rip off. It's that mainstream horror." but it is so good. I love it. Kevin Bacon's best film as far as I am concerned. At least that I've watched. Ugh, Virus. I remember when that came out and renting it. We all hated it. Nobody liked that movie. I knew it was terrible when I watched it back in 1999. That's a notoriously bad movie. YES! PET SEMETARY 2!!!!! Love that movie. I also wish Mary Lambert had a bigger career in horror. I really do and I do love the original Pet Semetary. My 90's movies, when i think of the 90's are Stir of echoes, Pet semetary 2, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Death becomes her, Species, Ticks [big childhood favorite], Arachnophobia [again, big childhood favorite], Mosquito [great summer creature feature], The craft [always been a fan of this movie. Love it], Jacob's ladder, Child's play 2, Return of the living dead 3, Pumpkinhead 2, The rage: Carrie 2, Copycat, The frighteners, Dead alive, The crush, Fear, Hocus Pocus, Scream, Misery, Scooby doo's witches ghost and Zombie island, An American werewolf in Paris, The faculty, and more recently Single white women and Thesis. Oh and I do like Jack Frost. That's a fun movie. I also really like Tales from the crypt's Bordello of blood. Demon Knight is alright. I've always preferred Bordello of blood.

happy to see Stir of Echoes here, primarily because it's based off a book by Richard Matheson. Matheson was one of the best horror and sci-fi writers between the 50s and 70s, his other famous titles include Hell House, I Am Legend, and The Shrinking Man. I still need to read the book, but it's undoubtedly better than the movie! Great list as always Kylie, thanks.

class of 1999 is a pretty good sci-fi thriller/horror i could recommend along with the film which spawned it, (Class of 1984) and definitely has a total early 90's vibe. Two other cheesy slasher horror flicks to watch for fun are The Invisible Maniac and Cheerleader Camp. I watched body bags since you recommended it and i thought it was ok. Being a former horror head its weird I never rented it back in 93 and i probably would have enjoyed it more back in da day. thx for the recommendation

Yes! 90s babies unite! 1999 was a legendary year for cinema! I was born in 1994 which is another legendary year for cinema! So lucky that we were born in an awesome decade for movies! I haven’t seen bad moon or the scooby foo Blair witch project and they look rad so thank you for the recommendations! Personally I don’t think a lot of the horror from the 90s has the bite or campiness that a lot of the 80s films have but they have their charm, I feel like the nostalgia keeps it charming when watching today. Omg I remember watching carnosaur with you and the cult! I recently saw the Corman film the undead! It’s got this great scene with witches doing an esoteric dance in a graveyard! Corman is so not your nemesis haha he’s on our side! And Jack Frost was another fun watch along! Movies like that and other bad movies are so fun to watch with a crowd! They’re my favorite! I feel like the 90s horror definitely leaned more into sci-fi with all the aliens and space stuff going on with them, plus when army of darkness came out it showed that horror was going more fantasy/sci-fi realm. And lets not forget Jason X haha Thank you again dark mistress for the recommendations of underrated 90s horror! I’ll try and seek them out cuz they look fun!

I feel like I am having to almost defend Music of the 1990's to people when... That surprises me. People are always aware there was such a big boom of so many diverse sub-genres of every major genre but then they forget that when it comes to how amazing 90's music was. They scratch their heads, stand still and all they can remember is Backstreet Boys, hip-hop that they didn't like (but maybe I did), Spice Girls (who I love to death), and if they can remember the first few years? They just remember "Rico Suave" and Wilson Phillips. Is it the best decade? I just feel like Columbine and the Lewinsky Scandal kinda soured things. As did the Unibomber and Rodney King and lots of other sad moments. AIDS was still so under-funded for research for a cure. Public Schools were a nightmare of neglect from the government. But, I do remember it very fondly for the music (first), it may be the last great decade for movies, and TV shows = _Daria, Sailor Moon, The Simpsons, Roseanne_ (before she got too wealthy and it went to her head), _Animaniacs, Living Single,_ a lot of good things.

There is a phenomenon with decades that the decade prior rolls into the next one. Like you mention about Demonic Toys feeling very 80s. Movies made in 1990-1993 and still very 80s due to when they were filmed, and pre-produced. Once you get into late 1993 and 1994 thats when whatever the 90s would eventually become comes from. A evolution and reaction to the late 80s early 90s. Same could be said for 1980-1982 feeling very late 1978-ish. The decade doesn't know what will define it untill that 3 or 4th year. Micro eras. Likewise 1998-1999 is VERY different from 1993-1994.

The Dr is a woman who is not making a zoo or park she wants dinosaurs to once again rule the world. Late great, John Carl Bechuler created the dinosaurs. The film budget was 1.2 million dollars.

I think one of the most underrated 90’s horror movies is Cherry Falls. It’s one of the better self aware “scream knock offs” that we got during that time. It takes the “have sex you will die” trope, and gives it an interesting twist. Also Brittany Murphy (RIP) is fantastic as always, and plays a really unique final girl.

Underrated and Under-seen can go hand in hand... For me, I'm going to go with: _Dust Devil_ (1992) is perhaps not underrated but it needs to be more widely seen / a blu-ray release was scheduled but canceled (literally) when it was publicized the director either assaulted some women or treated women badly in relationships (I forget which). _Killer Condom_ (1996) has some very problematic elements in "attempting" to portray a character declaring themselves trans but as a gay-themed horror film? It's fantastic. _Sleepwalkers_ (1992) is a little... spotty in terms of storytelling quality but it's highly satisfying in terms of action-horror and I don't usually like action-styled horror but this one is just incredible to witness when it gets going. _Brainscan_ (1994) I need to re-watch but it hit every category for me, I had an amazing time. _The Borrower_ (1990) I **really** need to re-watch but it's The Only Other Horror Film from the director of _Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer_ so... A must-see right there. _Bugged!_ (1996) is a goofy Troma bug infestation flick but it has an all black cast and it's very funny and clever. _Mom_ (1990) is a very, very good werewolf film but I do want to warn the Mother And Son themed stuff is maybe... a little weirder than almost anyone tends to want to watch... Be ready for that. _Gemini_ (1999) which I've only seen once but it was fantastic. _Uncle Sam_ (1997) gets better every time I see it; very daring and confrontational against certain American traditions... _976-Evil II_ (1991) is a bit on the sleazy side but for such a very low-budget film, the horror scenes are some of the most impressive of direct to video I've ever seen. _Bio-Zombie_ (1998) I haven't seen in years but I've seen it multiple times and it's another great action-horror film. _The Tommyknockers_ (1993) is a camp masterpiece... It's not a masterpiece in terms of character development or dramatic devices or anything. But... *WOW* is it early 90's campy! _Snow White: A Tale of Terror_ (1997) doesn't skimp on the fantasy, fairy tale aspects. Which I enjoy more than the horror elements on this film. _Mary Reilly_ (1996) might be one of the most underrated horror films I've ever seen. Julia Roberts' Irish accent may be atrocious but the film is stunning in terms of not skimping on the horror and ghastly elements (considering it stars Julia Roberts) but the character writing always has me up in knots. There's a lot to talk about with it! _Two Evil Eyes_ (1990) I need to rewatch, desperately. Especially because Dario Argento is one of my favorite directors. But most surprising to me is I sincerely loved George Romero's "short" at the beginning of the film = and, Adrienne Barbeau and Ramy Zada is one of the greatest B-actors who never became a huge star. (HOW?) That face... That voice... _Dr. Giggles_ (1992) never gets enough respect; criminally underrated! Troma's _Def by Temptation_ (1990) again: All-Black Cast. Black filmmakers. The low budget does hurt some of it but it has unbelievable atmosphere and a top-notch soundtrack which I've found almost all the songs downloadable if you look around. The first 3 _Leprechaun_ movies (1993-1995)... Call this bias, especially by nostalgia. But I love these 3 movies unconditionally. They have a few flaws. But I never have more fun than these! _Cemetery Man_ (1994) might require a few re-watches to fall in love with its mix of wild arthouse, absurd comedy, loads of sex (Rupert Everett shows off everything), and existential, visually poetic drama. See this immediately if you haven't! _Troll 2_ (1990) yeah... I said it. My vote for the greatest character in all of horror is Creedence Leonore Gielgud. If she weren't enough... there's much, much more to love about this PG-13 little charmer.

I've seen every one of these movies except 4th Floor & Scooby-Doo Project(which I had no idea it existed). With Species, it was Natasha Henstridges first movie and a young Michelle Williams played young Sil. The cast was pretty loaded with some well known names. And there have been 5(6) Species movies in total, though only the first 2 are the good ones, IMHO. Demonic Toys is a fun one. I think there have been a few of them even a crossover movie of Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys. And what can I say about Roger Corman that hasn't been said. I suggest checking out his version of Little Shop of Horrors and if you want to dive into some delicious action movie cheesiness check out Death Race 2000. Like you I prefer the book Pet Sematary to either of the movies(the 90s one and the remake). Don't get me wrong I love the og movie, I just feel there were some plot points from the book that were left out(Juds wife) or changed(Missy Dandridge changed to an older ill woman and Ellie's first experience with death) that lessen the emotional hit. The remake...yeah I've watched it a couple times, but things have been changed so much it just doesn't hit like the original. That being said I love Pet Sematary 2. I've been a fan of Clancy Brown since Highlander. I like Edward Furlong and Anthony Edward's too. But Clancy is just batshit bonkers and chews up his scenes like a rabid dog. Gotta love it. And Virus is just so much fun. The cast is cool af. Including Cliff Curtis(Hiko) who I know better from Fear The Walking Dead and The Meg 1&2. And the fact that the effects, if not 100% at least 99% were all practical. And lastly Stir of Echoes. Love it. I'm big Kevin Bacon fan. And what he brings in this is great. Was it one of his best movie, no, but in no way is it his worst or even a bad movie. Keep up the great work oh Daughter of Darkness. Much love from Pennsylvania ❤🦇❤️🦇❤️🦇

There is a slasher called Popcorn released in 1991. It is about a film class doing a all night Horror-thon in an old theater. The movies shown are fake 1950s style b-movies each with their own gimmick. People in the crowd are wearing costumes. While the film festival is going on, the killer is picking people off. The movie isn't really that scary but it is so much fun. It is so aesthically pleasing. It was released in 1991 but feels like the most 80s movie ever made. It is the kind of movie that is a little cheesy but in the best way possible. Like not a so-bad-it's-good way. More like how movies or shows made today try to feel like the 80s or are set in the 80s but can't quite pull off that feel. Popcorn just has that 80s vibe in spades.
