I think del Toro complained about the marketing of Crimson Peak. It was marketed as just horror and he wanted it to be marketed as a gothic romance. So audiences watched it and were disappointed at the "non horror" of it.

Hello Haunted Hippie. I just discovered your channel. Wow. A lot of great stuff here. I'm an actual Hippie; you know, from the sixties? Now that I'm an old hippie and I spend most all of my time watching movies and looking around on the interweb, it really is nice to find a channel like yours now and then. Especially now. The times are extremely depressing for an old peace and love freak like myself so finding a little non-cynical fun from time to time is important. So keep up the good shit and thank you- you've made me smile.

I believe one of the issues is a lot of moviegoers, at least people in my circle, only care about a "score" and don't actually read reviews. I am asked all the time " what score would you give it" and my reviews go in one ear and out the other. When I write reviews, I refuse to give them a score.

I know exactly how you felt about a Cure for Wellness. The first time I saw it, I thought it was very good but not great. Then I watched it a second time and it's one of my favorite horror films. I remember this was my first introduction to the gorgeous Mia Goth, and I had to look her up on IMDB immediately after the first viewing. The soundtrack was also incredible and the setting and visuals were so stunning. I even watched an interview where Mia Goth said that the building that they filmed in was incredibly haunted and that added to the visceral nature of the performances for me.

John Carpenter learned a huge lesson in ‘82. Don’t release a really good horror film the same time E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial or films for broader viewers did in box office competition. I really enjoyed seeing the other nine films on this countdown, Satan. Lack of marketing for several maybe another factor.
@LuckyBastardProdАй бұрын
Actually don’t release your sci-fi film when there’s a glut of them as was the case in the summer of ‘82. ET taking away business is too easy. The Thing came out the same day as Blade Runner but also in cinemas and doing well were Poltergeist, Star Trek II, The Road Warrior, Conan The Barbarian, ET was a family film and not really the same audience. The things marketing campaign was dismal to say the least as well. I saw it opening day and there was hardly anyone there, saw Blade Runner the same day and it was packed and i saw Star Trek II that same day and it was packed as well. No one really knew what The Thing was and once word of mouth started it was gone.

New part of the story is fine, but Doctor Sleep is a must see IMO for Alex Essoe as Wendy Torrance, Carl Lumbly as Dick Hollorann and Henry Thomas as Lloyd/Jack. Erie how well they pulled off those iconic roles. And then re-creating the biggest star of all, the Overlook Hotel. Seeing that again made the movie a yearly staple for me.
@_NoDrinkTheBleachАй бұрын
It's weird that Night of the Creeps failed so thoroughly. It's been a horror staple for me since I saw it as a kid. I would put it on equal footing with The Blob and Return of the Living Dead as my quintessential 80s not dead serious horror classics.

I didn't see Doctor Sleep until years after it came out... and I loved it. I remember when it came out that there was no way it would hold up as a sequel, which is why I didn't see it. To be honest, I might have went to see it if I didn't know it was a sequel to Shining (a very very loose sequel in my opinion).
@mindlessothy06Ай бұрын
To think that John Carpenter's The Thing was underappreciated when it came out is Ludacris to me. The movie itself was a showcase of amazing practical effects that still hold up 32 years after it came out. No wonder it is considered a horror classic for many.

Thanks, I really enjoyed and needed this to prolong my Halloween. The Thing is the touchstone for sci-fi horror, oh, and I don't really care about reviews, unless there's an overwhelming argument for a movie that is, well, dumb. Lol. Thanks again.

I can remember what happens in A Cure for Wellness. I remember nothing about Crimson Peak apart from not enjoying it. I'm not a fan of Del Toro. I consider him vastly overrated, but think his early films are okay. As with many foreign directors that get sucked into the Hollywood machine, I think he lost his way, and the majority of his work is now mediocre at best. I remember watching Night of the Creeps for the first time on holiday with my family in Florida, my one and only trip to the US, on the hotel TV and absolutely loving it! You'd think visiting Disney World meant more, but watching Night of the Creeps is one of my core memories of that vacation.

Kylie, another great video. I love Jennifer's Body too. Megan Fox is fantastic in it. Halloween 3 is, well, grossly underrated. Would've been good if it had made a big amount at the box office. And then they moved away from the Michael Myers storyline. Halloween 2018 is great. It made sense. But Halloweens 5,6,7 tend to embrace, well, sheer ridiculousness. Sadly, a mere money grab, as it were. A lot of John Carpenter's films haven't done well at the box office. In the Mouth of Madness (which I like) only made $8.9 million on a budget of $8 million. Anyway, great vid Kylie...

I never miss a Nicolas Cage movie and I too love Renfield. Gee we need a comedy horror movie once in a while. We need that laughter I the thugs we love to watch too. And it’s Nicolas Cage.playing Dracula 🧛, get real. Your deep dive of Doctor Sleep helped me tons on a rewatch of it. 👍 I’m a movie movie goer. But sometimes a movie lasts one week and I didn’t hear anything about them. 🤨 Tonight I see a screen unseen at AMC again. 👍 Yes your deep dives help me so much with movies like this. Thanks so much. Sometimes I just don’t get it. But with your help I do. Last “ The Thing “ loved it then, love it now, love it always. The scariest movie I have ever seen. Cold, isolated and baby who’s the creature. Best in my book. 🤩

I enjoyed Reinfeld it resonated with me on a deep and personal level.Annihilation was a box office flop but was critically acclaimed and found an audience. I mean, it's kinda a horror film Donnie Darko would also be one. It flopped nobody understood it they didn't release it because the airplane crashing into the house was offensive because it hit close to 911. But one of my favorites that I loved. Also grindhouse but really cool and interesting list.

Nice top 10 video! This is an interesting idea seeing movies that flopped in the box office and yet now have a cult following. I think that’s what makes these movies cult movies, they’re only loved by the non-normies lol but, then again, I always wonder if there were other, bigger movies that were simply more popular and more people when to see those instead. I did see a cure for wellness in theaters when it came out! I’m willing to bet that word-of-mouth was what made that movie flopped cuz I couldn’t handle a lot of it lol but I still liked it! I still haven’t seen crimson peak lol So crazy that doctor sleep flopped! But then again, I remember seeing Blade Runner 2049 when it came out in 2017 and that flopped too. I guess it’s cool knowing we both can help the movies box office that need it lol It’s true that Kubrick really only did a horror movie cuz his last few period piece dramas like Barry Lyndon flopped and horror was getting more popular so that’s why he did a horror. And he picked the Shining cuz it was the first horror book he read that he didn’t immediately reject. He got really into it but then the story he wanted to tell changed over the production. I personally believe Halloween 3 is only now getting popular since the release of the David Gordon green trilogy and people realizing all the Michael movies suck so at least part3 is new and different. But I know why the Thing flopped. ET came out the same week and was more family friendly and comforting which I believe was the way movie audiences were going, more comforting movies after coming off of the hardcore roughness of the 70s. But yeah it’s totally reclaimed by this point! Hahah Thank you my dark, spooky librarian for this video! Hope we get more of these in the future!

Cool list, haven't seen them all but the ones I have definitely didn't deserve to "flop".. Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof) was a surprisingly huge flop at the box office, many theories as to why.. Bless the Child (2000) was also a huge flop critically and financially, especially at the time, I think it had a 60M budget.. it's on "worst films of all-time" lists lol, I'm sure most people forget that it even exists, and rightfully so..

Some great movies, of any genre, are doomed to flop when first released. Be honest, the first time you saw The Shining, was that a movie that made you think it would be a blockbuster at the box office? No, right? Other movies are victims of bad timing. The Thing was never going to succeed in the summer of ET.

Ok I've partook in the devils lettuce so I'm feeling chatty 😂 This is the longest comment I've ever typed 😂 I didn't even know Event Horizon is a horror movie! Definitely adding that to my list. A horror Sci-Fi starring Sam Neill, say less! Have you seen In The Mouth Of Madness? I remember watching it as a child it seemed nuts, the seen that sticks out in my head most is Sam Neill with an axe, that was before i watched Jurassic Park so that's what I knew him as when I watched JP 😅. A Cure For Wellness was so beautiful but so boring. Like honestly one of the most beautiful films I've seen. I remember Crimson Peak coming out and even when I watched the trailer it didn't make me want to watch it. It looked like it looked beautiful though. Doctor Sleep is one of my favourite movies ever. I watched it - the directors cut before I watched The Shining (which I wasn't that impressed with tbh) I can't believe it flopped like what the hell guys. I feel like if it came out after Flanagan was more well known (after the Netflix era) it might have been more successful. Oh, never mind, you just said that 😂😂 Great Minds! The Losge I wss not a fan of. It was really depressing, I don't like when films bum me out. I felt the same after watching the original Speak No Evil. I feel like it's its own subgenre - Depressing Horror I loned Renfield. It made me like both actors, both of whom I didn't like before and would have actively avoided movies starring either of them. Anyone I've showed it to has loved it as well. The fight scenes were really good too. I never heard of Night of the Creeps. It doesn't really sound like something I'd watch to be honest. The Shining. I wasn't really a fan tbh, like I'm glad I watched it but I wasn't a fan of the acting tbh. It looked great though! I think this is one I'd prefer the book of, I've read a good few Stephen Kings books. Bag Of Bones or The Tommyknockers are two of my favs, would highly recommend. The Tommyknockers had a TV movie I think, you could do a Book VS TV. I haven't seen Jennifers Body, I don't actually know how or why. I will watch that soon. I was about to say I think it was marketed very badly at the time but then I remembered I learned that from your deep dive 😂 Halloween 3 I put that on Halloween night but I fell asleep, not because it was boring or anything, I was just tired. I really liked what I did see though. I didn't realise The Thing flopped, I didn't know that. I loved it, that's definitely one I'd rewatch.
