I have to disagree about Whoopi Goldberg and Marisa Tomei being on this list. A great comedic performance is just as good as a great dramatic performance. Oftentimes dramatic performances come off as mechanical and pretentious. Comedy is hard- you can't fake it. Drama has so many more tricks that can be used to achieve it's desired effects.
@2004dale9 жыл бұрын
Yea I really liked Marisa's performance in my cousin vinny. I think overall she is a convincing actress, like her performance in slums of Beverly Hills. Comedy or not you believe her portrayal of a character when you watch her or at least I do. :)
@jamescollins91789 жыл бұрын
+Rhaegar Targaryen Marisa Tomei is a great actress, proven by her subsequent nominations for dramatic roles (In the Bedroom, the Wrestler). Just because a performance is comedic doesn't mean it's not challenging. Comedy is hard, and isn't recognized/awarded enough!
@MrDuffmann229 жыл бұрын
+Rhaegar Targaryen yes
@yellowcougar189 жыл бұрын
+Rhaegar Targaryen An example I like to use regardin the difficulty of comedy is Julianne Moore. Moore can't do comedy. She had a role in one of the greatest comedies of all time, Big Lebowski, but she's not a comic. She's the straight role in that film. Evolution required her to be funny, and she's not, and that goes for every comedy she has been in. She's terrible. She just can't do it. Tomei did the comedy really well, but she can also do drama, among many other things. She gets way too much flak, in a bad way, but any time I watch My Cousin Vinny, I enjoy the movie. She doesn't annoy at all. On the other hand, there are many other roles I can never rewatch because they annoy the hell out of me.
@leilacherradi34859 жыл бұрын
I reread your initial comment and I still disagree. I haven't seen my Cousin Vinny but in the excerpt where I see Marisa Tomei, I am not convinced at all, in the excerpt where I see Whoopi I am not convinced. I can't juge a performance with two minutes of acting though. But I would still disagree with your definitions of comedy and drama ending with the idea that comedy is harder than drama. They're just different.

Thank you for the Oscar's HERstory. None of that means that Kidman gave an "underwhelming" performance. You said it yourself, she was "ok" in The Hours. As a hardcore fan of Virgnia Woolf, I think she was brilliant. She clearly doesn't deserves to be in this Top 10.
@JamesHarris-hl2bm8 жыл бұрын
Juan Bertini Yes, she was ok, but ok is hardly Oscar worthy. Both Streep and Moore were also in the film, and she looked like a ham next to them. She even has the distinction of being the only Oscar winner, to also be chosen for worst performance of the year, for the very same film, not to mention, the only Oscar winner unable to win any of the major critics awards. That night just have to do with the fact that Moore won most of them for Far From Heaven, and the other big one, New York, went to Diane Lane, although Heaven won Picture, director, supporting actress, supporting actor, cinematography, with Moore's performance finishing second there. I guess at this point, it makes no difference. They've both won. It's just that Kidman won for The wrong film. It should have been for To Die For.
@mara57267 жыл бұрын
Can't say I agree with any of the critics. The three of them stole the category and they were all really good. Julian got it later on, and very well deserved as well, and Meryl must be by now tired of getting so many awards lol.

A lot of times people seem to win for having been nominated and losing a year or two prior. Cher was better in Silkwood and Mask than Moonstruck, Nicole Kidman was better in Moulin Rouge than The Hours, Russel Crowe was better in Gladiator and The Insider than A Beautiful Mind, Jennifer Connely was better in Requiem for a Dream. Helen Hunt was amazing in As Good as It Gets. You seem don't think that acting in comedy is good, let alone great. Her performance was flawless. Her character was a single mom in dilemma, but still bring laugh to anyone. And she toe to toe with the great Jack Nicholson. Love that movie
@hawrnball Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Yea, the character is strident but that’s the point. Helen gave a performance of equal comedic and dramatic weight. It’s one of the most unique performances I’ve ever seen and she acted it beautifully. It was also a huge deal because at the time she was just known as a sitcom actress because she was still starring in Mad About You.

@@hawrnball yeah, exactly. There were then some chit chat about how the actress from TV stole the top prize for movie awards. Helen proof then to not be underrated by get another Oscar nomination.

Questionable Oscar choices since 1928? Should've included the most notorious Best Actress robbery of all-time: Grace Kelly's drab turn in the forgotten 'The Country Girl' being chosen over Judy Garland in 'A Star is Born.' 1954.
@WakandaBabe8 жыл бұрын
Judy Garland was amazing in that movie.

Jonathan Kieran Grace won because she had three great performances that year: The Country Girl, Dial M For Murder, and Rear Window, and won both the National Board of Review, and the N.Y.Film Critics Award for Best Actress, so it was no surprise to anyone that she won, especially since her film was nominated for 7 Oscars, including picture, director, actor, art direction, cinematography, screenplay, and actress, winning the last two. She also a the golden globe. Judy was actually runner up for the N.Y. Film Critics Award.

I don't mind Gwyneth as an actress, but.. I couldn't more agree, when that year Cate Blanchett got robbed of that statuette. It had "Elizabeth" written all over it. Biggest upset, ever.

Emma Stone should be added to this list. She wasn't bad in Lalaland, but she wasn't that great. The other performances had much more depth to them.

Wait! Are you saying Nicole Kidman didn't deserve the Oscar for The Hours?! Then you clearly don't know much about films with real depth. How about including Jennifer Lawrence and one of her many underwhelming performances? Or Emma Stone, though I like her dearly, in the last award ceremony?

I'm so bummed that Cher was added to this list. Why is it so hard to believe that she is a talented actress? She was very convincing in Moonstruck, and her Brooklyn accent was impressive. Her performances in Silkwood and Mask were also Oscar worthy. It's such a shame that after all these years, people still don't give her the credit she deserves.
@Vf469 жыл бұрын
***** I very much agree. Especially since she's a one-named singer, Cher gets compared with people of the like of Madonna, who, despite her musical abilities, is not a great actress. Cher has a true talent for acting. Moonstruck and Mask are just two of many of her tremendous roles that prove it.
@Starkardur9 жыл бұрын
+Vince F Cher beat out Glenn Close iconic role as Alex Forrest, Holly Hunter's incredible performance in Broadcast news and the heartbreaking Sally Kirkland in Anna. Three incredible performances that deserved it way more than Cher.

+Gunnhild Edwards It still bugs me that people have never given Cher the credit she deserves. I think she earned that Oscar, maybe others feel differently. However, I wish people would actually acknowledge that Cher is a great actress, and is one of the very best actresses to break out from the music scene.
@Starkardur9 жыл бұрын
Vince F It's not that I think Cher is a bad actress, she was fine in Moonstruck and worthy of a nomination but she campaigned like a mad dog for the win like no other actress that year, she had a P.R. machine on full force making sure she won the oscar and her performance was no way near as good as Glenn's in Fatal Attraction.
@Vf469 жыл бұрын
+Gunnhild Edwards I didn't know that she campaigned that much. It's interesting the politics that goes into the Oscars. You make some good points.

Say what you want about Marisa Tomei, there is no denying the intensity of her screen presence in My Cousin Vinny. That character is still vivid in my mind 25 years later. Whoopi not so much, but I like that comedic performances aren't downgraded to just being Globe worthy.
@leeshdee92699 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I hate how comedies are shafted at the Oscars. Just because a role makes you laugh instead of cry doesn't mean that it doesn't deserve an award. Comedy is incredibly tough to do. It requires clever wit and perfect timing. It's a lot harder to bring a smile to people's face than it is to shed a tear.
@coolarunmohan9 жыл бұрын
+Adam Baker those were my thoughts too, Marisa Tomei's performance was brillint. its hard to give a natural, convincing comedic performance. I wonder how many actresses who did the so called "weightier roles" will be able to pull that role off

+Adam Baker I totally agree with you. When I heard she won that year I was disgusted. But, I had not seen the movie. When I saw the movie some years later, I totally changed my opinion and thought that was a well deserved Oscar won for her. Her performance was brilliant. Those who can pull off a great comedic performance are few. I saw an old comedy with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Horrible! As great an actress as she was, Hepburn and comedy do not mix.
