Yep...pretty much. You don't have to be older then dirt to be talented. For some reason we except our Hollywood actresses as shallow, pretentious, gold digging wenches that when someone down to earth, super cool and relatable comes along it almost seems strange.
@horsemann73548 жыл бұрын
John Milton Super cool? Relatable? How the hell is Jennifer Lawrence relatable? She's a colossal BITCH who scolds foreign interviewers for not knowing English well enough, and who thinks so highly of herself that she refuses to wear the paint necessary for her role in X-Men, now she's ruining the franchise. Also, her performance was mediocre compared to the nominees that year (Chastain, Riva, Watts). JLaw also portrays the same kind of character in all of her movies.
@theriffwriter21948 жыл бұрын
All the greats are hard on the plastic ass interviewers. From diNero to Tarantino to Pitt and Clooney. Because if asking the same question that the last jackass just asked, is that's the way you choose to spend your life then you have earned a little hazing. I once seen an interview with a guy who interviewed Heath Ledger, in between takes on the dark knight and this idiot said "his hair (Ledger) was really greasy. I feel sorry for him" he couldn't wrap his tiny mind around how it was the JOKER, a fictional character, that had greasy hair. They just don't get it! Alone with Lawrence, I despise superhero movies and after she made it in Hollywood she (understandably) didn't want to be in an X-Men movie after First Class but they begged her to return and I totally get why she would want things her way. Superhero movies are the acting equivalent to flipping burgers. You could live to be a thousand years old and never reach the day when Martin Scorsese walks up to an actor and says "I loved you in the new Spiderman movie". Lmao. Also I would ask when was the last time you got naked and had someone cover your whole body in inch thick paint. In fact the first time I seen Rebecca Romijn in that paint the first thing that came to mind was "goddamn that looks uncomfortable. I wonder if her snatch and crack are painted?" You hear stories all the time about actors wanting to rip off appliances that are just facial so I can't even fathom the pain of full body. There has to be a circle in hell where it's just millions of people in mystique paint for eternity. If fact; name one instance where anyone on the list of actresses you named had to put up with all that makeup. And why not? Because they don't have to. Leave the uncomfortable grunt work to the super models who can't act. It's called empathy brother. Look it up.

I remember watching "La Vie En Rose" with my 80+ Grandma (who is a BIG fan of Edith Piaf), she teared up and I asked her why, she said the movie took her back to her younger days, but it was Marion Cotillard's performance that astonished her. That woman transformed herself into Edith Piaf. In my grandma's words; "as if Edith came back to life" And me, being a cinephile myself, agree with that. Marion deserves to be in the this list. And whoever made this list, I have a question; Have you seen Bjork's performance in "Dancer in The Dark"?
@shimmeringfairydust32756 жыл бұрын
Koonisha Kardashian Thank you, think you for both of your remarks about the two actresses you mentioned. Cotillard was beyond amazing. Surely one of the best acting performances EVER! I don’t know who would be at the top of my list, but Marion would be a serious contender. I guess the reason Bjork wasn’t mentioned is because the topic is performances of Best Actress winners. Bjork gave one of the most stunning performances I have ever seen - and yet, she WASN’T EVEN NOMINATED! At least not for her acting. She did get a nomination. For best original song from the movie, but sadly, didn’t win. The song was amazing. It lost to a Bob Dylan song in “The Wonder Boys.”But Bjork did win best actress at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie also took home the top prize. Since Bjork was ignored, the Best Actress Award of that year (2000) should have gone to Ellen Burstyn for her incredible work in “Requiem for a Dream.” Seriously, one of the finest performances I have ever seen - and she frightened me when she became delusional. Burstyn received great critical acclaim for her work, and she WAS nominated that year for Best Actress for “Requiem for a Dream.” Only to lose to the perfectly adorable and loveable Julia Roberts...whose work in “Erin Brockovich” was fine but hardly earth shattering. I think Julia’s finest hour was in “Steel Magnolias.” She was so, so good in that movie, and she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. But she was up against Brenda Fricker for “My Left Foot.” As good as Julia was, she was no match for Fricker’s fierce performance. We should all be as lucky to have a mom like that of writer Christy Brown (who she played in the movie). Fricker was just incredible - I wish I could see more of her work. Sorry for going off topic. I tend to do that.

BigGeekEmpire Bullock's role was a lot more complex than I think some realize. That part could have easily gone very wrong. It could've easily come off as self-righteous, but it didn't -- at least not for me. The white southern bell who sympathizes with black people is a little cliched. "The Help" anyone? My point being, that Bullock took something everyone was used to and did it in a tactful way. I think because the role was so understated as opposed to Jennifer Lawrence's intense character in "The Silver Linings Playbook" (an oscar which should've gone to Jessica Chastain, but let's not get into that) that it's easy to overlook what Bullock really brought to it.

Sally Field in Steel Magnolias has always been one of my unforgettable movie experiences. Her breakdown after the funeral is perfection. @shimmeringfairydust32756 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. And these actresses are all past 40, about the time “the Academy” and Hollywood deems their shelf lives over. Quality roles become fewer, so the chance of their ever winning an Oscar gets slimmer and slimmer. The same of course is not true of men. In an odd reversal, men under 30 have almost no chance of winning the Best Actor Oscar or even getting nominated. Men must wait until they are at least in their mid 30s to have a chance. The Academy generally awards men 40 years or older - hi, Leo. Heck, Christopher Plummer was in his 80s when he won his Oscar - the oldest person ever to win an Oscar for acting. And he was 88 when he was nominated this year for “All the Money in the World.” Jessica Tandy is the only elderly woman I can think of who won an Oscar for Best Actress. She was 80, and the oldest Oscar winner ever for acting until Plummer broke her record. Glenn Close actually has a chance this year - she is absolutely amazing in “The Wife.” She’s 71. And the Academy needs to stop snubbing actors in their 20s. Rarely are they even nominated for Best Actor, and they almost never win. Adrien Brody is the youngest Best Actor winner - he was 29 and several months old when he won for his incredible performance in “The Pianist.” There’s a kid out there named Timothee Chalamet who is so unbelievably talented. It’s scary. He became the youngest man nominated for Best Actor since Mickey Rooney in 1938. He was just 22 when he was nominated for “Call Me By Your Name.” He should have won IMHO, but lost to Gary Oldman who was 58, I believe. Oldman should have won long ago, but had garnered just a single Oscar nomination before he won last year. Again, why does the Academy insist its Best Actor winners be middle aged? Chalamet is supposed to be incredible in “Beautiful Boy,” which comes out later this year. He might be nominated for Best Actor, but it’s doubtful that he will win. They’ll give it to an older gentleman who’s been undeservedly passed over for years - like Robert Redford who is in his 80s and starring in what he says is his last role. Golly, I didn’t mean to go on for so long, but I felt some things had to be said. And I know most of you know who Timothee Chalamet is. I was just being sarcastic. Sorry for the lack of an accent on his first name - my computer is not cooperating.

@@shimmeringfairydust3275 I so agree with you, when Tom Cruise didn't win for Born on the 4th Of July, I pretty much quite caring. He was overlooked for supporting Oscar in Rain Man as well!! Janet Carlson Very good points. Tom Cruise was amazing in “Fourth of July” but I think he lost because Morgan Freeman was also a favorite to win - and I think they “split” the vote, allowing Daniel Day Lewis to win. Cruise has been superb in several films, like “Magnolia,” and “Jerry Maguire.” Leonardo DiCaprio is always excellent, but he blew me away in “Revolutionary Road,” not so much in “The Revenant.” But he won for that because he’d been denied so often previously. Tom Hardy was great in “The Revenant.” The Oscars are so political and stupid most of the time. But at least when they nominate films, you learn about some of which you were previously unaware, and you are thus more likely to see them.

Even though its not my genre of movie, he was good in it!! Oh I had forgotten Leo in Revolutionary Road, he and Kate were superb!! That clip made me want to see The Reader. I think Kate is very underrated as an actress. She was in a romantic comedy called The Holiday, and she was excellent as the young woman experiencing unrequited love!! Áron Tamás An excellent list, but I preferred Debra Winger over Shirley McClain in “Terms.” Still, I am glad Shirley won, as she was over 40, and it was probably the last good leading role she ever got. So she probably would be Oscar-less, since the Academy frowns on giving actresses over 40 an Oscar. As good as Kate Winslet was in “The Reader,” I thought she was even better in “Revolutionary Road” which came out that same year. The whole cast was mesmerizing - Leonardo DiCaprio should have won a Best Actor Oscar for that role, he was so good. But he wasn’t even nominated. The only nomination for this fine film was for Best Supporting Actor, Michael Shannon. Shannon was brilliant. I think he was only in 3 scenes, but he was so good, everyone at the theatre at which I saw the movie couldn’t stop talking about him. I just love his work, and I hope he wins an Oscar someday. And don’t kill me, but I don’t get the love for Jody Foster. She was a great child actress - absolutely deserving of her Oscar nomination for “Taxi Driver”when she was just 12 or 13. But I find her merely adequate as an adult actress, although she was great in “The Accused.” But she a,ways seems to speak with a fake Southern accent (unless she’s speaking another language. I think she’s fluent in both French and Italian). She’s an absolutely brilliant person - so, so smart. I could see her becoming a fine director, if she continues in that direction. But her acting just doesn’t impress me. Everything else about her does.

She really did become Brandon Teena. It seems this list was awfully heavy on recent performances and didn't even consider any made before 1950. Olivia de Havilland, for example, was superb in her Oscar winning role for 1949's "The Heiress." Joan Crawford was amazing in 1945's "Mildred Pierce." And Bette Davis ruled in 1938's "Jezebel."

Of course she is on the list, an attention whore so they always get the spot lights.

I have made sure that I take your lists with a grain of salt since you guys put personal preferences to actual merit but this list made me dissapointed and emotional. I mean why isn't Marion Cortillard on this list? Like seriously?

Oh. I haven't watch that yet. Didn't even know about it actually.

Jedaqia Angel :O you definitely should. Get that your 'film nerd' friend, sit down and watch it. Tell me how you saw her performance when you do :). I mean the woman won SEVEN major best actress awards because of the role including the Golden Globes & Bafta Awards. She swept the whole award season.

Where is CATE BLANCHETT??????!!!! She was amazing in Blue Jazmin, by the way she should have won for Elizabeth.

So agree. That was the first time, I saw her & she blew me away. The Oscar's come & the award goes to.. Gwyneth !!! Biggest "injustice", ever. But yes, so happy, she got hers for "Blue Jasmine". Cate is a mighty fine actress.

#1 should’ve been Hillary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, hands down. Arguably the greatest performance ever-male or female. And putting Jennifer Lawerence and Louise Fletcher side by side in Honorable Mentions is an insult to Louise Fletcher.

I think louise fletcher was so freaking brilliant in one flew over .. scary but brilliant but I also think Jennifer Lawrence was so amazing in silver linings playbook .. u should give it another chance
