The problem with the theory that Blackbeard absorbed Thatch explanation is that it doesn't really align well with Marcos comment. Marcos said that his body has always been different, so that would include all the time before Blackbeard murdered Thatch. I think a more probable explanation is that Blackbeard is literally two people. There are apparently cases of when people have an unborn twin absorbed into them. This would explain why Blackbeard could eat two fruits, because he has the body of two spirits in essence. They say that each spirit of a person can't handle two fruits not necessarily one body though. So if Blackbeard's body has an unborn twin in it, then the twin spirit can handle the other fruit. It also fits perfectly into Marcos and Aces comments on Blackbeard about how his body is strange, and that he has a double life.

BlackBeard can absorb devil fruits because his yami-yami no mi is awakened. Remember that black blanket he put over the dead White beard at Marineford so he can get the Gura-Gura no mi? Well I think that blanket came from his DF powers. It is one of the key to get and absorb one's DF. I read a comment somewhere saying that a Normal and not-awakened yami-yami no mi can only negate DF users powers, while an awakened one can not only negate it but absorb and make it their own power by absorbing the spirit of the DF.
