*No Particular Order* 1. Lord of the Rings Symphony no 1 Johan De Meij-- Never watched/read Lord of the Rings, just an epic piece 2. Shenandoah, Frank Ticheli 3. Fantasia in G Major- Timothy Mahr, so underrated 4. 4 Scottish Dances- Malcolm Arnold, arranged by John Paynter-- I know it's originally for orchestra but I like the band version better 5. Irish Tune from County Derry- Grainger 6. Children's March- Grainger 7. Second Suite in F- Holst 8. Sleep- Eric Whitacre 9. Sanctuary- Frank Ticheli-- THIS PIECE IS SO Awesome 10. El Camino Real- Alfred Reed

1. Symphony No. 4 - David Maslanka 2. Traveler - David Maslanka 3. Wine Dark Sea - John Mackey 4. Concerto for Wind Ensemble - Kevin Day 5. Come Sunday - Omar Thomas 6. Festival Variations - Claude T. Smith 7. The Frozen Cathedral - John Mackey 8. Of Our New Day Begun - Omar Thomas 9. Rocky Point Holiday - Ron Nelson 10. Symphony No. 2 - John Barnes Chance There may be some bias in this list, but I feel that all 10 of these pieces truly show what wind symphony is. These pieces all have something that stands out in them, and a lot of them are just fun listens the whole way through. Personally, I don't think pieces like Lincolnshire Posy are all that special (respectfully) compared to these pieces.

My favorites are!!!!! 1. Symphony in Bb - Hindemith 2. Danzon No. 2 - Marquez 3. First Suite in Eb - Holst 4. Symphony No. 4 - Maslanka 5. The Frozen Cathedral - John Mackey 6. English Folk Song Suite - Williams 7. Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral - Wagner 8. Afterlight - William Pitts 9. Transcendent Journey - Rossano Galante 10. Machu Picchu- Yagisawa 11. Southern Harmony - Grantham 12. Dionysiaques - F. Schmitt 13. Lincolnshire Posy - Grainger

I purposely left transcriptions off the list. I'm particularly snobby about *original* works for winds. Also, I tried to like Dionysiaques, I just don't dig it.

I do have to say this list is absolutely immaculate and unique I’ve always found it so difficult to make pieces that are my favorite and inspirational but after many years here’s my take 10. Grainger - Lincolnshire Posy 9. Turrin - The Scarecrow 8. Maslanka - Symphony No. 4 7. Gorb - Awayday 6. Holst - Hammersmith 5. Gould - Ballad for Band 4. Nelson’s - Sonoran Desert Holiday 3. Schwantner - And the Mountains Rising nowhere 2. Hesketh - Diaghilev Dances 1. Whitacre - October (it’s a lot of bias but impacted me so much emotionally and musically and was the piece that brought me to professional wind repertoire) Rumpelstilzchen by Turner was tied with Diaghilev Dances for how stunning and influential it was but Heskeths work had more meaning

Yes! I played A Child's Garden of Dreams in my undergrad studies at California State University, Fresno and it was amazing!! Loved that piece, super fun and very special, especially as a percussionist. Here is my list in no order: - Country Band March (Charles Ives) - Here We Rest (Anthony Barfield) - A Child's Garden of Dreams - Maslanka Symphony no 7 (My fa Maslanka symphony) - Wine Dark Sea (Mackey) - Armenian Dances Part I (Reed) - El Olimpo de los Dioses (Oscar Navarro) - Four Scottish Dances (Malcom Arnold) - Symphony No 6, Symphony for Band (Persichetti) - Incantation and Dance (John Barnes Chance) - (and obviously) Lincolnshire Posy :))) Also yes that Fennell video is PHENOMENAL! And the roundtable discussion with Junkin, Cramer and others on that DVD is just as gold.

I love lists! Movies, food, places to visit, wines, and of course, pieces for Wind Band. When asking for lists, I give the caveat that list-makers can change their mind in five minutes. Considering that there could be a list of most significant, most accessible, most influential, etc. could change my list. Pieces I think that could be on a variety of wind music lists, I am going with important pieces I could listen to and or rehearse most every day: 1. Holst, "Hammersmith" 2. Stravinsky, "Symphony for Wind Instruments" 3. Schmitt, "Dionysiaques" 4. Persichetti, "Symphony #6" 5. Husa, "Music for Prague, 1968" 6. Tull, "Sketches On a Tudor Psalm" 7. Piston, "Tunbridge Fair" 8. Maslanka, "Symphony 4" 9. Bennett, "Suite of Old American Dances" 10. Mozart, "Grand Partita" Honorable mention: Schwatner, " . . . and the mountains rising nowhere."

Excellent list! And I agree, my list has certainly changed over the past few years. You know how every director has that piece that everybody loves, but they happen to not enjoy one bit.. I feel that way about ... and the mountains rising nowehre. I know I should appreciate it, but I just can't get into it!

Russian Christmas Music- Reed First Suite in Eb- Holst Second Suite in F- Holst English Folk Song Suite- Vaughn Williams Lincolnshire Posy- Grainger Blue Shades- Ticheli Cartoon- Hart Ghost Train- Whitacre Rocky Point Holiday- Nelson Of Sailors and Whales- McBeth A few others that could be considered- Asphalt Cocktail (Mackey), Ride (Hazo), Lincoln Portrait (Copland), Lord of the Rings (De Meji) I’m probably forgetting a few but those probably give a fair representation of many of my favorites.

Story Time! I was at Half Price Books in San Antonio one afternoon and as I was leaving I saw on the outside Clearance rack a tall book that read Percy Grainger/ Fennell and I was like what? I pick it up and its the Lincolnshire Posy score Fennell edition. Price: $.75 cents. I grabbed that sucker and went right back inside.

Love the video! Wanted to know if you or anyone in the comments could help me find a piece I played in band myself. I don't remember the name but I remember it had three movements and each movement was tied to a story. The first movement told the story of a ship that couldn't stop so everyone on the ship died and became ghosts, the second story was a wife that wore antlers in the forest during hunting season and died to her husband accidentally thinking she's a deer, and the third about a husband handing over his wife to the devil, but the devil comes back from hell to return her because he doesn't like her either. A friend and I were reminiscing about this piece and how we loved playing and listening to it but neither of us remember what it's called. I hope either you or someone else can help me find it! It'd be greatly appreciated!

Interesting choices I have really never cared for George Washington bridge... Your other choices are solid...though I am surprised with the lack of pieces like Hammersmith and Sketches on a Tudor Psalm not making your list Personally I am big fan of Heroes Lost and Fallen as well I know you said no transcriptions but I am big fan of 1. Tull Eulenspiegel- Stauss/Hindsley 2. Profanation from Bernsteins Symphony number 1 3. Symphonic Metamorphosis- Hindemith/Wilson

I'm just really a nerd for that 50's polytonal sound! Psh, get those silly transcriptions outta here!! lol Although, most band folk don't consider the Hindemith a transcription, since that version for band came at the request of Hindemith.

@@thefuturemillionairebanddi4528 LOL....understood I am a " little " bit older. I was in high school school and college in the 80's So back then..:-)...it was the older works you mentioned...Persichetti, Grainger etc However, I think the transcriptions were the majority of the playlists back then It seems like in the 90's the works for wind band exploded with composers like Gillingham, Camphouse, Ticheli etc creating a ton of new material
