The writers didn't want Ginger to be misinterpreted by the viewers as socially opportunistic in ANY capacity even IF her friendship with Courtney would have been genuine. Several times throughout the show, even the best of Ginger's associates both familiar AND distant show their greed for repute and popularity. They also showed their disdain for American social norms at the time and frequently used the excuse of "an unfair system" to justify their selfish behavior. Ginger's WHOLE arc was that she was the outlier WITHOUT being the *outsider*. Through her believable integrity and virtue, she served as the rock all her peers sat on for shelter against the waves of loneliness and avarice of teenage life. Ginger was effectively popular WITHOUT being the "popular girl". Having Ginger and Courtney officially join ranks would have been interpreted narratively as Ginger "Eating from BOTH plates" by the viewers. She was at a low point since its kinda obvious Ginger was closer to her than Dodie was- sure Dodie and Macie are seen together more at times, but Ginger and Macie had something special- like when she ran out of the puberty video, Ginger was the one to check on her while Dodie stayed behind. She felt hurt, lost, and betrayed, and Dodie pretty much told her "If you were a real friend you'd want Ginger back too!" Yes, her going through with it was wrong, but she may have felt things would've been much worse if she turned her back on Dodie. If Ginger continued to unknowingly ignore Macie, she would've lost Dodie and possibly lose Ginger due to growing apart

To be honest, that episode should have been a turning point in the series. A lead in to a major change in the status quo. What if after that happened, Ginger decided to ditch Dodie as a friend? She'd forgive Macie, who would genuinely feel horrible about what she did, though not immediately. Then she would re-evaluate her relationships, see how much better her and Courtney are together and as a result become stronger friends with Courtney. You'd have to spend a lot of time justifying why Ginger would choose to leave behind someone who's been her friend for years, but it would be possible. Therefore, one of the weaker episodes could have become a great setup to an arc that would have strengthened the series.

Besides, the reason why fans hate Dodie is because she is still supposed to be seen as a good person. If she were written as a bitchy and conniving character to the bone, then fans would be on the side of the writers. I totally understand where you’re coming from with a lot of your personal choices here. Though I do feel like I disagree on some points. I personally feel like Ginger’s moments of pettiness regarding Daren and Daren’s drifting away from the gang to basically become his brother were very real moments in the series. Sometimes friends do change into people you don’t like anymore Sometimes breakups were simply the way it had to be And sometimes the best of us have our emotional and petty episodes I LOVED early Daren and I totally understand frustration in “ruining” his character, but I feel like that’s such a great thing for this show to do in having the courage to actually show us that “friend becoming boyfriend becoming jerk becoming ex” transformation because so many shows are afraid of main characters being changed so drastically. But it’s a very real part of life and I adored seeing that in the show. Same goes for Sasha, actually. He served as such a great awakening to Ginger in that sometimes you fall in love with the wrong people, and some people are just jerks and hypocrites. I do, however, agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your points in these episodes. ESPECIALLY regarding Dodie. Dodie has never once shown herself to be a good friend to Ginger, always just a selfish jerk who expects Ginger to change for her but always willing to throw Ginger under the bus for popularity. I never understood how the show had the courage to turn Daren into a jocky douche but not enough to have Ginger cut Dodie out of her life. Especially when we saw Courtney and Ginger becoming actual dedicated friends to each-other, something NEITHER ever got from their “best friends” But no, let’s abandon poor Courtney... Those did rub me the wrong way Great videos though! Really liked your thoughts!

I clicked on this video so fast, I couldn’t wait! Wicked Game is one of my least favourite episodes. I was definitely expecting this to be on the list. Macie in this episode was pretty unbelievable, definitely her worst moment in the show (and she never has any bad moments except for this one, I love her). Dodie, again, is such a bad friend and I can imagine her doing something like this but it’s still an awful thing to do. Just an overall negative and useless episode that really didn’t need to be made. Maybe, it could’ve, but it definitely could’ve been handled much better. Also, yes, Courtney is great in this episode. Sibling Revile-ry is an interesting choice because I don’t hate this episode, but I think it’s pretty ehhhhh. I just feel so awful for Carl in this episode. George started off being ok and reasonable, but military school is just too far. It’s a shame that Ginger was denying how her system wasn’t working. I’m sure the episode would’ve been a bit better if she was slowly realising over time that the program really wasn’t working out and I definitely agree about Ginger being out of character. She’s never been this mean to Carl before and it was really surprising seeing her act this way around her brother, who she does love (even if Carl can annoy her at times). It was also surprising Carl didn’t do any research. Heh, it’s a pretty surprising episode, but not in a good way. Next Question is a pretty eh episode in my opinion. But I actually don’t hate it because it can be entertaining at times, but man.. those cringe moments really make me feel so bad for Ginger. She is young, however, and I don’t blame her (I knew plenty of girls when I was younger who had crushes on their teachers). But, when she caused her team to lose the competition, I just felt so bad and it was pretty uncomfortable to watch. I probably don’t hate this episode because Carl and Brandon singing along with The Little Seal Girl is so funny and I really loved that scene, I just found it hilarious! Overall, I just think it’s pretty eh and I don’t have too much else to say on it. Driven to Extremes... yeah, I dislike this episode too. I’ve seen ‘mean substitute teacher’ episodes done far better in other shows. I can see what they were trying to do and the idea sounds ok in concept. But.. it just turned out to be pretty messy. Ginger really can’t catch a break in this episode with both the sub and classmates hating her (until later in the episode of course). It’s too bad the episode ended with her getting detention. I know, it’s supposed to be realistic (because, well, in real life, that’d probably happen) but the ending could’ve been so much better than just a slap in the face. Carl and Hoodsey’s plot is pretty boring and cliched, I definitely agree with your points on that. Battle of the Bands was suuuuuch wasted potential. It really could’ve been about, I don’t know, an actual Battle of the Bands? The ‘underlying’ fight between Ginger and Darren is so petty and unlike the two, especially Darren. I know they were trying to develop his character but they made him such an unlikeable jerk in this episode, I couldn’t believe some of the things he did and said. Dodie, again, is being an awful friend and it just makes me frustrated seeing her not side with Ginger. Also.. Courtney. Oh my goodness.. Courtney in this episode. Now, Courtney being treated this bad would make sense if Courtney was a bad person. But we’ve seen her be nice, caring and kind. She learnt from some mistakes she did in the past and later on in the show, she’s become a curious and kind friend who just wants to know Ginger better, even if she can be rude at times (but she never really means it). Carl’s subplot was also wasted potential and could’ve been dealt with much better; great idea in concept.. but it was handled pretty badly, especially when it connected with Courtney’s plot. Definitely a waste of an episode and it’s probably my least favourite as well. No need to feel bad about making this list. I totally understand what you mean though; As Told By Ginger is an amazing show and I feel a little bad pointing out the negativities to such a fantastic series. But, even the best of things have some really low points and it’s ok to criticise something we love. It’s my favourite Nicktoon, along with Hey Arnold (which also has flaws) and you shouldn’t feel bad for doing a ‘least fav episodes’ list. Great work as usual, I loved the video and hearing your opinions was really great! It’s so nice seeing As Told By Ginger being talked about more and more.

I remember watching through the entire series and feeling for Dodie. When I was a kid I always thought Courtney was the selfish one. Then I rewatched as an adult and I CAN'T STAND DODIE. I wish they would've had Ginger drop Dodie to teach her a lesson. It gave the wrong message to stick with long term, toxic friendships no matter happens. And I just want to say Courtney was truly a gem in the series. I wish Courtney and Ginger would've developed a closer friendship together.

Loved watching this video!!!!! And you do have a TON of excellent points on each of the 10 episodes that you covered. I've been into As Told by Ginger for about a year (maybe even 2 years) now, and honestly, I wish that I had gotten into it when I was growing up!!!!!!! I related so much to Ginger personally, because my mom was a single mom up until I was 9, and I also really relate to Carl, because (like him) I also have a really "not so good" relationship with my father as well. But when my stepdad came into the picture when I was 9 years old, I had a bit of a hard time getting used to him when he started dating my mom. But as time went by, I got to now my stepdad a lot better, and when he married my mom 2 years later, I had finally gotten the ONE THING that I had always wanted : a family. And honestly, my stepdad (who I call Dad) has become the greatest Dad I could ever ask for!!!!!!!!!!!! And while watching As Told by Ginger, seeing Lois' relationship grow and blossom with Dr. Dave, it reminded me so much of my mom and stepdad, and I especially love Lois', because she reminds me a lot of my mom in some ways too :). I know that this video was about the bad episodes, but while "ranting" on in the comments, I guess I just got off into the good things of the series.....oops 😅. But there is one thing that I never understood : WHY DOES MIRANDA HATE GINGER SO MUCH?!?!?!?!?????

The episode where Ginger wants to shave her legs always annoyed me. I never understood why Louis wouldn't let her shave her legs.

@@neonlights8012 well, if you put it that way, maybe it is. But Ginger could've still wear short clothes if not caring for her legs being hairy. I think it's because it's A) not safe for children B) when you start shaving your legs, hair start growing more intense Dunno though, I can understand it, but it's still kinda weird.

That episode made me hate everyone, not just Lois, Miranda, Dodie, or even Ginger. Ginger is hated for her own reason called being way too nice to Miranda and Lois. Lois banned her from shaving her legs while Miranda made Ginger slave away doing too much homework. Ouch! Some caring!

Looking back at Wicked Game, I have this to say. If I were Ginger in that situation, I would have just dumped Dodie's whining butt altogether and just see her as a distant dream. Dodie is better off with Miranda and Mipsy and, to me, that's a fact. As for Sibling Revile-ry, Driven to Extremes, and Battle of the Bands, I figuratively puked my guts out because of how mean-spirited and how uncalled for they were. Finally, I am rather thankful that I forgot about Next Question.
@kawaiipop074 жыл бұрын
Even in the flash forward in the season finale, it shows dodie and macie still there! It’s annoying because it honestly should have shown them going their separate ways and being ok with that because that’s what growing up is about. Sometimes even long lasting friends end up going their separate ways when they get older especially when you realize they are toxic. Macie wasn’t that bad but it’s evident from wicked game that she can’t think for herself. Also her ending up with Darren is shitty because I thought Orion was a much better fit for her personality than Darren. But leave it to nick to always have to have the two best friends fall in love. Aside from all that though, the ending still made me tear up and so did a lesson in tight ropes.
@GAshoneybear9 ай бұрын
I never bought her being married to Darren or being friends with Dodie or Macie. The only person that made sense that she might stay in contact with is Courtney of she stayed essentially the same. If anything, the ending implied that Ginger has her own attachment issues because she can't let go of childhood friendships that clearly are no longer mutually beneficial.

Believe it or not the original plot was Courtney had a crush on Ginger and at first didn't know it and then by the end around High School I think maybe halfway through the season she was supposed to confess to Ginger that she was in love with her and ginger wouldn't know how to take it at first and then slowly ease in to try and give it a chance that's why Courtney is somewhat fascinated infatuated with ginger. The problem was it was still early 2000 so featuring any type of gay lesbian was taboo. Still would have been nice to see.

I really like Ginger ending up in detention at the end of Driven to Extremes. It's one thing from this show that I remember seeing when it was on air that always stuck with me. I think it was a really good move to show that standing up for something, even when you're in the right, can still have consequences. Speaking up sometimes means getting in trouble, but it's a victory none the less.

Ok, the Dodie/Joaquin/Ginger thing was pretty realistic. Maybe if they had been in college during that situation, Dodie would have handled Joaquin and Ginger falling for each other with Grace and maturity (pbthththuahahahaha!), but her reaction in the episode is pretty typical. Especially for her.

The funny thing with comparing Noelle and Mr. Krabs betting people is that when you compare the episodes, it really makes no sense why she would. Mr. Krabs has been kicking Plankton’s microscopic butt at poker for YEARS, so it made sense he’d get overconfident and bet something important he doubted he’d be in any danger of losing. But Noelle lost to Polly three times in a row, so her being overconfident isn’t a factor. It’s sheer contrivance to get the ball rolling.

I don't watch season 3 in my rewatches, really retcons some character development, treats Courtney terribly, and ruins Darren. Darren would've never wanted to be a football player and become his brother based on what we saw in the first two seasons and he wouldn't cheat and abandon them all for a cheerleader and sports and he was like a big brother to Ginger and Carl. There is so much inconsistency in the writing and characters that in some ways season 3 is like a crappy fanfic of a wonderful show. 6: Hate Wicked Game, because season 3. I guess I can give Macie some understanding because she often backs down with Dodie and goes along, not always, but often. I do love that Courtney is the true friend of Ginger. Also added I hate that season 3 give both Ginger and Carl a significant other and especially in Ginger's case it's so poorly done and Darren character sucks now. Super sucks how they ended that episode too. 7: Ginger is so frustrating in this episode and I hate the George guy trying to destroy Carl's doghouse. 8: I also cringed at the teacher crush but it is a real thing that many kids go through, what I really cringed at was Dodie saying her teacher likes her back. In most teacher crush situations I've heard of, the kids knew it wouldn't work and the teacher could never like them so it was weird to see Dodie encouraging it but not surprising for her character. Also hate any Brandon and monkey scenes, ugh. 9: Don't like Carl's plot but I do like when Ginger and Courtney and the other kids stand up to the sub. Felt like what Ginger does go through a lot, sometimes doing the right thing and standing up for yourself and others does get you in trouble but doesn't mean it was wrong. I kinda wish Ginger would've smiled in detention to kinda show that. (Dodie is awful in of lice and friends, but I love Ginger and Courtney's friendship in it. Dodie also sucks in the transfer student one). 10: agree with battle of the bands, bc season 3. What garbage.

I never bought Ginger and Dodie being friends as adults. Just like I never bought Darren and Ginger being married. The only reason either of those would make sense is Ginger not willing to let go of the status quo. But if she is supposed to be an emotionally healthy adult, neither one of those relationships make sense. Next Question is a great episode to me. The writers showed that a crush on a teacher is natural, but not to be encouraged. Given who emcouraged it (Dodie and not Courtney) and Lois' response.

With the episode Wicked Game, one of the writers admitted that they screwed up. Because the following episode should have been Dodie and Macey trying to get Ginger to forgive her. But instead the next episode was like the previous episode never happened. I always hated Dodie, I felt that Ginger deserved a better friend. Like in the Easter episode when her mother told her she couldn't hang out with Ginger so Dodie expected Ginger to call off the party. Darren even told Dodie that she was being selfish

Never been a "As Told by Ginger" watcher... I have caught glimpses in the past as a little kid. But, that was only because my cousins who were somewhat older 3rd graders at the time, would watch shows like that. As I stuck with "Tom & Jerry", "Spongebob". Spongebob was always a focus to me lol.. As I see this show now, wow... talk about good writing and bad... it's like what you say "Plot holes and such". Everything seems real... the conflict between friends, and a failing steady relationship.. only to turn sour in the end... Jeez... It's like we want to expect the worst outcome, more than an up-lifting ending...
@NiciCool3 жыл бұрын
Agree with much of this, don't necessarily agree that it all makes these bad episodes. At points you seem to label some episodes as "bad" (not just that you dislike them, but poor quality) because you dislike a character or how a character acts. For instance, the episode where Ginger has a crush on her teacher is brutal to watch for me because I get absolutely terrible secondhand embarrassment. That doesn't make it a bad episode - in fact, that might actually make it a great episode. We can probably all relate to doing super stupid things in front of a huge group of people, and that's why it affects us so much. The substitute teacher episode is also a great episode because it doesn't resolve nicely. It doesn't talk down to its viewers, pretending like every time you stand up for yourself the people in power will have some magical change of heart. Chances are, this is exactly what would happen if this occurred in real life - in fact, she's lucky she didn't get suspended. It's up to Ginger to decide whether or not the consequence was worth her uprising, in the end.
