It's intimidation and pressure. You pick Dan, your opponent feels pressured because they don't wanna lose to Dan, and end up losing because of stress. Dan has everything in the palm of his hand from the first second of round 1.

My favorite (worst) thing about Dan was in Capcom Vs SNK 2, since taunting charged your opponent's super meter. So his super taunt was him burning his super meter in order to fully charge his enemy's.

Dan in Alpha 3 was actually a pretty good character. His crouching MP was an excellent anti-air and his standing HP was quick and did good damage. Then you could also use his LK version of his air tatsu which was very effective at getting in and pressuring your opponent.

@@WH3 Apparently him being bad is part of his character. I don't mean that he's supposed to completely suck, it's that his fighting style is canonically powerful, it's that he handicaps himself by imitating Ryu. So, when he uses his own moves he's good, when he uses moves copied from Ryu they are literally just a worse version of Ryu's moves. The dude could be one of the best fighters if he just had more confidence in himself.

A lot of people don't understand tiers. That's the bottom line. Tiers are just meant to gauge the SUCCESS/strength rates of a character. You can win with a low-tier character, but it doesn't mean said character is good (compared to the other characters). I legit want to facepalm every damn time someone gets butthurt when they see an objectively weak character for a given game get shit. Like, hey. I love my share of shitty characters in random games as well, but I can also acknowledge when they aren't competitively viable. If I want to win with them, I have to try harder than compared to using a meta character. Tiers are for real.

Justin Wong beat Air in a tournament using Dan against Ryu at Marvel Madness 2011. Granted he had to use a lot of evasion and tick bullshit to do it, but he showcased Dan's strengths to their fullest. The Dankukyakus are safe on block and are great for setting up tick throws, jump taunt gives a super jump effect to evade fireballs, Ultra 1 can pass through fireballs, and his med kick makes a good stand poke. Wong even finished the fight with a decidedly old school tactic of the empty jump low hit confirm into super taunt into ultra.

Also, j taunt goes so high it can avoid some dps (maybe all of them, not sure) and Ultra 2 was very good to end a combo with since it hit 6 times for max damage regardless of distance if it hit a airborne opponent and Sent Dan back, avoiding retaliation.

During the Ssft2, I played Zangrief in all cash arcade tournaments and played extremely well most of the time in mpls/stpaul. I was able to pay college my sophomore year. ~3 to 6k in cash. Once I got close, which far easier than prior SF2. You could go off but you had to work to get there and bait players to get the boom. There was one Ken player from student Union who was the most difficult to play against. Because his patterns would change, the other major problem quality of repaired joysticks at the arcade. Miss though days.

Dan actually isn't as bad as people make him out to be in SF4 and you can easily argue that his matchups were easily better than Sean's matchups in third-strike (lots of 2/8s and 3/7s in that game). Granted, he is intentionally the worst character in all versions, but you can easily body people that lack fundamentals with him while doing a fair amount of taunting. Pros have also used him time from time and there have been quite a surprising amount of upsets with him during 4s run. Dan and Birdie were absolute garbage in alpha 2 and 3 games and you had just about a zero chance of winning with them against the better characters (assuming you were against a player that knew how to play).

If we're talking in terms of pure matchups, Sean is probably the worst character on the list. However in absolute terms I would argue that Sean has more tools in 3s than dan in sf4. Plus there's something very pleasing to me about all the top 3 in my video being Dan :D

If anything Sean deserves mad props for breaking the curse of Dan and making Ken seem more interested in chasing woman than actually fighting in Second Impact only to anger the gods at Capcom and have them double down on the Dan treatment. :C Gotta love Dan for being a zero talent goofball but still somehow never giving up. He is probably the biggest reason why Sakura is a force to be reckoned with.

Zangief takes some work. You have to get used to taking a hit and countering. He is fun once you know how to work with him. He can actually take down many foes by knowing when to sweep, and when to spin. Funny note. If Zangief makes it to Bison, there really isn't much Bison can do except lose.

That's in terms of damage output. Oiled up Ultra 1 is the most damaging Ultra in the game, by quite a good margin over Zangief's Ultra 1.

One of the best Streetfighter 2 players I ever knew was a Zangief specialist. He would take a couple of fireballs to the face, but over the course of 3 rounds he would just chase you down and weaken you and be absolutely relentless like the Terminator. The ridiculous reach of his grabs meant that if you initiated any sort of move to try and keep him away, a skilled player could see your muscle twitching (this was in the days of people playing each other in the arcade) and initiate a spinning piledriver on you before your move reached it's critical point of animation where Zangief could do nothing but block or get hit. So in the end you're reduced to just blocking and hoping he made a mistake. You play TOO defensive he'll put you in the corner and you're dead. You jump out of the corner, he'll catch you from range with a spinning piledriver or a moving spinning lariat. You spam fireballs and he'll just do that flaming backhand thing that cancels your hadoken out, then spinning piledriver you when he gets within like one third of the screen away. His reach was matched only by Dhalsim, his strength was second to none, he had just enough in his arsenal that a skilled player could keep Zangief relatively safe from almost all forms of danger. yeah man. Coming up against a highly skilled Zangief player was not a fun experience. I stopped playing Streetfighter when it started getting silly, when the names were like: Super Turbo Alpha Streetfighter 2 Your Mother Edition: Hyper Duel Fighting Mega Bastard '98, but from what little I've seen and played since then, Zangief has been refined to be more accessible to even less skilled players. I can't imagine what my friend could do with him now.

I know this video is old, but I wanted to provide a bit more constructive feedback than some of the other comments. I feel like some are on this list not for being weak, but simply for being more difficult to play as. I'll cover the first one I saw that bugged me a bit, Zangeif. Some say ranged attacks are his bane, but between Double Lariat and Banishing flat, he's capable of not only dodging them, but aggressively pushing towards the opponent, then of course once he's in, it's time for a spinning pile driver. He's a beast for those good with him, though he honestly does take a fair amount of skill and timing.

I think everybody are going to agree about this, you can choose the worst character in game but if you know how to play with that character you can be invincible with that character in that game. He based his opinions on what the pro level players have said and established. If you look at the tier lists for each game he talks about you will see the characters he mentions being 2nd or 1st at the bottom of the tier list with horrible unfavourable matchups across the board, that's why Dan appears numerous times because he's consistently made to be low tier on purpose. Tier lists are established under the assumption that two players of equal skill playing said characters will result in certain matchups, i.e if a Zangief and Dhalsim player fought in Street Fighter 2 and both were of equal skill then the Dhalsim player would have a natural advantage because Zangief is particularly bad against zoning heavy characters. The more matchups in which a character would have an advantage in an equal skilled fight determines their placement on the tier list. Some characters are so good they have a lot of even or positive matchups with most of the roster (Street Fighter 2 Akuma, hence why he's banned from most tournaments) while ones will less positive matchups and mostly bad ones will be at the bottom. When discussing if a character is good or not you need to assume both players using the character are equally skilled, otherwise it would be impossible to determine which characters are actually good and which are bad/need buffs. Pro players are the absolute best of the best with the characters so that's as close as you're going to get to equally skilled opponents using characters to their full potential. If even the best players in the world struggle to make certain versions of characters work in certain games then they're generally weak characters with a lot of disadvantages.
