I can't thank you enough for not defaulting to the "dae tilke bad" argument. He is very capable of making great racing circuits (see Bilster Berg, Atlanta Motorsports Park, Sepang, COTA, Bahrain, etc) but often his clients prefer things outside his creative mind. I'm also happy not to see COTA on this list. However, I don't think he ruined Hockenheim; the old layout would have been rather poor for modern F1.
@thejoshrevell4 жыл бұрын
Tilke isn't the one that called for the old Hockenheim to be demolished. And even then, the old circuit, whilst it was spectacular, was not that great for racing. I'll get hate for that. But, the new Hockenheim has proven to be a fantastic track for driving and racing. COTA and Bahrain have also been great, Sepang is an all-round great track, and of course Atlanta and that mini-Nurburgring Blisterberg are great, too. And of course, Istanbul Park. Tilke can design a track. But, he's been an easy target for years, unfortunately.

@@thejoshrevell Surely Paul Ricard wouldn't have qualified for this list under the conditions you set out at the beginning of the video - The ugly tarmac runoff at every corner didn't exist in the 1970s when the circuit was first built and used for F1. I'd consider the current version to be disqualified from this list for the same reasons as Tilke modified tracks like Hockenheim, since the runoff is such a major aspect of the current layout. I do think it's a poor circuit for F1 racing today. But was it a bad circuit historically? It's a below average circuit for racing, but it still has Signes corner and the Mistral straight; It had some good races historically, such as Leyton House nearly winning in 1990. That's more noteworthy bits of track and classic races than Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, Valencia and Korea ever produced. It's the ridiculous amount of runoff and the current F1 cars that make the circuit so poor for racing nowadays, rather than the layout producing bad racing. And since it has a contract for F1 through to 2024 (I believe? Correct me if that's wrong), it's worth considering if it'll be a bad circuit for future F1 cars. I think in 2021 once we get new cars that can follow more closely, T1 and particularly T4 will become overtaking spots for F1 cars again. I'd expect to see some battles that start at T1 or T4 and continue down to the Mistral chicane under those circumstances. I'd expect it to be one of the most improved circuits from 2021, even if it's unlikely to produce a classic race in dry conditions. I can't say the same for other tracks on this list like Sochi and Abu Dhabi, or even a contender like Shanghai. That's a stronger defence of Paul Ricard than I can make for most of this list, or the 'honourable mentions'. I'm not saying it's a great circuit like Spa or Monza. But it's not as terrible as recent history would have you believe, either. Leaving it off the list is the right decision IMO. I think this vid is well researched and has actually done a pretty good job of avoiding recency bias tbh - It would've been easy to miss Nivelles or Zeltweg, since they each only hosted one race, or have a list featuring Paul Ricard, Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, and Tilkedromes that fell off the calendar in the last decade.

I tend to disagree with Singapore being a bad track. Sure, the first bit of the race is boring since it's like a Monaco train ,but as soon as someone pits all hell breaks lose. Teams start using all sorts of strategies, crashes everywhere and okay, maybe it isn't the easiest track to overtake on but it definitly isn't on Monaco's level. Remember Ricciardo passing people repeatedly on the last singapore race or Vettel coming through the field after pitting.
