1. Madonna can say anything she wants, and in the way she wants it. She was obviously ahead of her time, and knew we were gonna get tired of listening to "My Heart Will Go On" in the airwaves over and over and over again. Celine Dion has much better songs than that one (which, is not a bad song), but, of course, "My Heart Will Go On" was shoved down our ears as a marketing maneuver. 2. Meryl Streep does open the envelope. When she hugs Daniel Day-Lewis as he walks up to the center of the stage, you can clearly see the card, and she's holding both the card and the envelope with one hand. 3. You forget that when Joaquin Phoenix presented that Oscar, it was 2021, and we were in the MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC! No one wanted to be there, there was no vaccine yet, and people were wary of each other. 4. Many of the moments you're criticizing involves elderly actors presenting awards. You say "Warren Beaty should've said this...", but you forget, not only is that moment really awkward, but Warren's thought processing is probably not the same as it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. It's not only a big deal for them to be standing up in front of Hollywood's best, but it is also a huge effort they're physically and mentally making to be there. It doesn't take away the fact that it was a bad moment, but, don't expect elderly people to say what you're thinking.

The fact that they let him talk for so long too! Like they cut off other people sooner that didn't just slap someone. The only person I loved that they didn't cut off during their acceptance speech was Leo. Like they all knew the meme was over so they just let him talk.

To include the announcement of Catherine Zeta-Jones just because Brian guesses Kathy Bates may perhaps, for some reason, for a fracture of a second have believed she might have won is far-fetched. I found it very sweet of him how he just said "Catherine" when he announced his former co-star with whom he obviously got along very well. Her response towards him also was very warm. I think that Kathy Bates glanced over to Catherine Zeta-Jones because she wanted to see her reaction. Zeta-Jones was the frontrunner an her win no surprise at all.

You said it perfectly. Brian just has his pet favorites and turns his lists into opinion pieces about them.

Even though it's not Oscar-related, but worth mentioning is in 2001 when Elizabeth Taylor was fumbling with the envelope when presenting Gladiator as Best Picture - Drama in the Golden Globes, as well as during the 2019 Annies when Francis Fisher didn't even know how to pronounce Michael Giacchino's name after he won Best Original Score.

Good call on number 1. I was thinking about that moment when you opened the list with the Catherine confusion incident. Then I was wondering what could have topped the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco, but then you put the "Come up and get it, Frank" in its proper place at number one. Kudos.

Do I understand this correctly? One person makes jokes about the consequences of another person's illness and is called to account by their partner. And the first person (C. Rock) is defended and "excused", while the partner is "ostracised"? A good 120 years ago, there would have been a pistol duel between the two men! Incidentally, Smith only acted as shown in 99% of US action films: With instant vigilante justice.

1) of the 100+ years of the oscars every presentor does that. They make silly jokes, and move on. Some are even worse. Jada's a tip of the iceberg. 2) will smith fucking laughed at the joke. He fucking laughed at the joke. What kind of sick demented individual, laughs at the jokes about his wife, then when he saw his wife visibly upset, he then started assaulting a comedian, who was there to do his fucking job.

I think the academy leadership should have gotten together on a call and declared Smith ineligible due to assaulting a presenter and gone with the runner up ie the actor with the second most votes. Then they award him and it’s pretty sucky to see people standing and applauding.

Idina Menzel has talked about what she was thinking, which was about a thousand things at once. She said she barely registered the mistake, though mostly on purpose because she had to sing and didn't have time to get upset. Afterwards, she was a little upset until she realized that it actually was great publicity for her. :)
@gailcaldwell1512Ай бұрын
Sorry, I disagree 1000000% on #1. I think you’re trying to imply something that SIMPLY IS NOT THERE. I DO NOT in ANYWAY AT ALL, think that Kathy Bates thought Sean Connery meant HER, while naming new Oscar winner. When he simply said “Catherine”. Kathy Bates had always been known by, as she still is to this day, January 1, 2025. And to me, and probably about half a billon other people that night, and to this day, knew he meant his former Co-Star, Friend, and fellow UK Dweller, Catherine Zeta Jones.

Part of the point for me is this whole I'm famous, she's famous, I made a movie with her, so we're first name basis, instead of being professional and announcing first and last name.
@johnjones381310 күн бұрын
There's a couple things going on with the La La Land Moonlight. First, you have two presenters way past their prime and looking borderline senile. Second, the lady backstage who was overseeing the envelopes was apparently texting and not doing her job. This is a symptom of our current world, where people simply cannot concentrate on anything for more than five seconds.

While it wasn't an announcement, there has been worse violence take place at the Oscars than the Will Smith/Chris Rock slap. There's John Wayne wanting to physically attack Sacheen Littlefeather for Marlon Brando's refusal of his second Oscar win that he had to be physically restrained backstage. Add Clint Eastwood's passive aggressive defense of the white savior western later in the ceremony. I am not saying the above to excuse the slap. When white men allegedly defend white women, it's chivalrous. When Black men defend Black women, it's a double down criminal offense that is his and hers fault because why would anyone want to defend a Black woman? Black women need more than just Black men defending them, but its pathologized. That ten year ban when Will Smith has made numerous apologies too, no one factors in at all. Just "bad behavior." Black people have to account harder than any white person does, and that's wrong. I'm not sorry your white feelings were upset, but check your own peer group. White men slap other white men on television every day, but get no accountability. There's lots of alleged chivalrous actions that are just as if not more violent than that slap. Really, check your privilege man. For the record, this is a good list. Some of these are reaching, like Meryl's announcement of Daniel Day-Lewis' third Oscar winand giving credence to the urban legend regarding Marsa Tomei's Oscar win. But most of these make sense.

One of the worst winner announcements in my opinion is when Denzel said “by a nose!” To Nicole Kidman. He was probably trying to make a joke but it has the connotation that she won because of her prosthetic and not her acting. 🤷🏻♀️
