To be honest Soul Hackers 2 is not very much like Soul Hackers. Souls Hackers is a very traditional SMT first person dungeon crawler just with some spin off angles. SH2 basically has nothing to do with the other games in the "soul hackers" series other than some meaningless cameos with the shop npcs. It isn't really a bad JRPG either, just it also is not particularly good. I don't agree with most of the games on this list. Not because I think you are wrong, the only one on this list I even slightly disagree on is SH2 and it is SLIGHT. But because most of these games are either re releases of old games..... or ports of phone games which aren't even RPG's to begin with. Like Various Daylife and NiNoKuni whatever shouldn't even be considered RPG's they are idle games. You don't even have to "play" them.

I’m gonna speak on Eiyuden Chronicle Rising, as a Backer. This game was created as a side story. If you researched it, you’d know it was NEVER designed to be a stand-alone game. This game integrates w 100 Hero’s when it comes out. This was created because we backed financially, and Rabbit and Bear wanted to put a portion of the game out, so that we can get an intro to characters. While you are entitled to your opinion,I feel like you put it on here without actually researching.

And here I thought Digimon World 2 was slow, Digimon Survive certainly beats that in slowness. I'm comparing a 20+ year old PS1 game to a game that just came out this year after so many delays back in 2018. Still, I find enjoyment in Digimon Survive despite it's shortcomings. And Digimon games have this history of being experimental, which is why almost no other Digimon games are the same with each other in gameplay. Granted, I understand that Digimon Survive and Various Daylife appeals to certain tastes, like me who would actually like relaxing and chill RPGs. So I wouldn't call them the worst games, just personal tastes. Fragrant Story, I honestly never heard about this one until you've mentioned it months ago. I was actually very skeptical the moment I've heard it would be released on the 3DS, a platform that reaches the end of its lifespan. And I hardly touched my 3DS at this point, having a Switch at this point. This deserve to be the WORST RPG to came out this year.

I like some of these and a couple of them are my favorite RPGs of the year. 😆In all honesty, I would place Soul Hackers 2 above a game like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, even with as excellent as that game is. I'm not of the opinion of old school elements of game design are bad, and I thought Soul Hackers 2 was a nice hybrid of the old and the new. The dungeons are old school and something like a considerably easier version of the dungeons in SMT: Nocturne and that appealed to me because Nocturne is tied for my favorite game of all time with Phantasy Star IV. The game has a lot of charm and does an excellent job at creating something that is a halfway point between mainline SMT, which is one of my absolute favorite things in RPGs, and Persona, of which I am also a considerable fan. That this game puts the focus on a group of adult characters is a nice change of pace for JRPGs and I hope this becomes much more common. The characters are complex rather than tropey and the story itself is interesting and avoids the obvious good/evil binary that fills the stories of many RPGs. Combat in the game is incredibly fun and also perfectly fits that halfway point between mainline SMT and Persona. Difficulty-wise, I think Soul Hackers 2 would make a great first game into the SMT series because it introduces the basic ideas of what to expect in combat in a way that is more challening than Persona but is not as brutal as the mainline games. There is also a lot for SMT veterans to enjoy in the way of optional bosses and "risky" enemies. Soul Hackers 2 even improves on the enemy engagement mechanic from SMT V in that slashing enemies can not only give you an advantage in combat, but it can also be used to avoid combat. People complain about the retro dungeon design, but they tend to not praise this innovation because they likely have a cognitive bias against the game due to the negative reviews. The complaints I see about the game are something I would consider to be superficial and petty, not every RPG will have dungeons like Persona 5 Royal because it won't fit every game's style. I'm of the mindest of what works, works and something that worked in the past can work in the present because novelty and quality are not the same thing. Some may say that all RPGs should have dungeons with the features of popular and flashy games and those should be viewed as being something like an advance in technology, but they don't take into consideration how appropriate such a dungeon design would be for the story in the game. Budget may have been a factor in the design of Soul Hackers 2's dungeons, but they work and they fit the story and setting accurately. To overlook all of the heart, the innovations to combat, the characters, and the story this game has because something isn't "new" enough makes me wonder if some people even appreciate RPGs on more than a superficial level. The number of dungeons ultimately doesn't matter, SMT games are about the engaging combat that takes place within them. SMT V only has 2 dungeons and I don't see people making the same complaints about it that there are with Soul Hackers 2. The point is that these factors shouldn't be considered some standard of quality for an RPG, what makes an RPG great is the experience you have playing it. You can choose to focus on things that some reviewers claimed to be flaws, but then you won't the the entirety of what is actually there. Ultimately, if you played the game and just didn't like it, then fair enough. It just wasn't for you. But I would say that if you don't like Soul Hackers 2, then SMT in general probably isn't for you either, because this is actually a solid entry into the series. But what do I know? I'm just some old guy who still plays SMT: Nocturne on a regular basis and loves the game exactly as it is. To each their own and no hard feelings. Just because I have a difference of opinion doesn't mean that I dislike those who think otherwise. I hope you all had plenty of joy playing whatever were your favorite RPGs this year.

@@juancastillo621 Yeah, it is a bit long-winded. 😆It's what I've been thinking after seeing all of the silly poo-flinging in the direction of Soul Hackers 2 and I finally let loose and said something about it. In 5-10 years, people will probably be calling Soul Hackers 2 an underrated game and they will wonder why it never got a sequel, it's a shame that Atlus will deem the game a failure because reviewers focused on superficial details that didn't fit their subjective personal preference for things that are flashy and novel, mistaking that for a lack of quality and preventing them from seeing the game for all that it really is. I also enjoyed Live-A-Live and Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, but I guess different strokes for different folks and all that.

Soul Hackers 2 is disrespectefull game compared to Soul Hackers 1 and Devil Summoner on Sega Saturn. Devil Summoner always was a detective jrpg series with ocult elements from mainline SMT, but no they created Nuwu Persona and just added ,,Soul Hackers 2'' to game name. Not to mention they changed gameplay mechanics completely, in SH2 there is no: 6 party combat system, you don't summon demons and fighting with them, Demon Loyality system, Waepon Fusion, Zoma Fusion, gothic atmosphere is also gone. Instead of that you just have Persona 5 + Tokyo Mirrage Sessions without Dating Sim elements. Mediocre and forgettable game, definitely worst Devil Summoner game. But even worse abomination of IP is Valkyrie Elysium, such a mess and like SH2 there is no connection with original game (Valkyrie Profile). Unique combat changed into generic button masher, story and character development not exist, dungeons design is awfull, no metroidvania exploration, no building team composition. Generic game.

Live A Live might be the only one I disagree with being a horrible JRPG this year.

Hooooo boy I can't wait for you to share this to RPG Sanctuary. I'm ready to defend it all, lol! I agree with this list 100%.

I wouldn't say the games listed are bad. I know some people who enjoyed a lot of these game even though they had flaws. That shows how different people have different criteria what makes an enjoyable game. Some I know liked Monark but I know after the demo that the time gimmick just wasn't for me. But thats the thing with such a big genre as Jrpgs. They differ greatly from each other and some are very experimental and do some things that can be deal breaker for some people but others find them enjoyable or don't mind them.

I was so severely let down by Live a Live, especially after all the love I have seen for it in recent years. I could not believe how shallow it was.

Thank you for pointing out Live-A-Live is utter trash. I never understood the hype of bringing it back. Awful characters, story, etc, etc.

About fragrant story... I really thought I wasnt understanding the game when I cleared the third map and it was over. I was like what should I do next? How does the game continue? Wait thats the game??

While I don't agree with u about rising being a sucky game it did confuse the hell out of everybody about wut it was myself included since the main game is targeting fall 2023 which I already new and I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of side scrollers but it was fun

Monark is a hardcore game with a lot of grinding a very difficult combats. The Story is very interesting and the characters too, but thats all. Ah, and the music. Best JRPG Music 2022 without doubt.

It's really too bad Shadow Madness was such a travesty. Its music and story were both really good. Everything else though ...

Ok, Assorted Dayjobs is even worse than I thought. I thought it was just the worst looking farming+ game in that Nintendo direct with (somehow?!) an even worse name than Triangle Strategy. I didn't realize it had no gameplay either.

thumbnail baits "jrpgs" but the video title and critique covers global rpgs, hence #1 being basically an indie passion project done mostly by one guy

oh wow....i wasn't expecting live a live to be on this list. and i remember watching your video on fragrant story when you reviewed it. i had a nice chuckle while watching it, tho i hated you wasted time and money on such a scam of a game.

eiyuden chronicle rising is just a companion game with low budget which is just a prequel to hundred heroes and it tells you the story of three characters (or more) from its world BUT the important thing is that this game has been developed by natsume atari and not R&B studios so they didnt waste their time on it i think the only bad thing in rising was its fetch quests but they were there to have a reason for achivements and and its save data will be transfered to hundred heroes but also i agree that this game ruined the reputation of hundred heroes because people thought exactly what you said in the video

Agree with everything except Live A Live, which is my second favorite JRPG of the year behind Xenoblade 3.

Everything else on dis list I agree whole heartedly with and my biggest disappointment was valkyrie elysium they ruined the goodwill that franchise had thank God valkyrie profile lenneth comes out this month so we can forget about that other game

I didn't find Monark to be a bad game at all and the characters weren't even insufferable as he mentioned. Maybe the villains, yeah, that's a given though, but everyone else was fine. I really don't agree with most points he made about it.

I'm actually having fun with Digimon Survive. the dialogue is exhausting and I didn't find out until halfway through my first play through you can go into the options and speed it up, so it took me an HOUR to get to any action (and that was STILL skipping all the dialogue, just at normal speed) now I'm on my second playthrough getting Mega evolutions I missed, and the bonus dungeon in New Game + has provided a challenge even for a veteran tactics player

I see Monark in the picture so I'm here to complain. Endgame Monark was some of the most fun RPG fights in a long time I could play with my enemies teleworking bosses into the middle of your awakened/mad group to fuck them up was really fun. I would without hesitation buy the next game in that series.
