I was born up north, but my mother's people were from Fort Valley, so I visited every summer in the 60's and 70's...the oppressive heat, bugs and scary kudzu made me hate it as a kid. As an adult, I appreciate the quiet, laid back, country atmosphere. Fort Valley has an HBCU and the Bluebird school bus plant that makes school buses for cities all over the country.

I'm from the Historical side of College Park, GA but I live in Arlington, VA, by way of my ex-husband who's from D.C., but has GA roots as well. Speaking in line with the video's topic, my middle sister graduated from Fort Valley State & Uinversity back in 2001. And I have cousins in Gerard. I'm sorry, but these places are just too rural for me. I need street lights at night and a Walmart or a major grocery store closer than an hour away, AT LEAST!! LOL My daughter and I have driven home the past 2 summers to visit family and friends and each time it has tugged on my heartstrings. I know Atlanta and a few of the surrounding neighborhoods aren't as safe anymore, but t's still home to me... PS. I forgot to mention that my stepfather was in the Army and we lived in Augusta on Fort Gordon for a few years. It's rural too, but nothing like the places mentioned in the video!! Whew!

Here's the bottom line if you have a lot of land you worth money that is liquidity and you can do anything to that land that you want and the farming areas hell yes. If I had small land in Georgia I would open up a RV park I would have a pool I sure would have the Lazy River for them and you bet I'd set it up to where I was the place to go and Beyond the place where they pass you all the time on the roads and all of you are there's you travel the back road so that's where I would have my Park. If you build it they will come

Most of the small towns only have one small source of income. The local politicians deliberately limit the amount of jobs. They dont want the citizens prospering.its a power thing.
@waynepurcell60583 жыл бұрын
Not true. Small towns mostly limit employment opportunities to keep WAGE COMPETITION from affecting the already established employers. They don't want a business moving into town offering $20hr when everyone else pays $12hr. It's to keep from rocking the wage boat to much.
@thegoblinsglen2 жыл бұрын
Actually in Fort Valley that is exactly why. It's always had a bad reaction to change or diversity in any amount. The other reason is because keeping a town impoverished keeps the funding coming in. That aversion to change has kept a lot of good paying jobs and better resources out of Fort Valley. If the wages aren't at a certain level the rents shouldn't be either, probably why there are slum lords and blight everywhere.

Being a resident of the great state of Georgia I believe you failed to realize that these old small towns are mainly farming communities. You portray them as shitty due to their lack of business but it’s the great people that make these towns some of the best to apart of. Peace and quiet with great biblical morals and low crime isn’t what your idea of being a great small town is

Almost all these towns are within an easy driving distance and I have seen a couple them. Did you know that Hopeyoulikeit is on the way to Swainsboro from here? Now there is a small town I think you missed. BTW, Statesboro is the home of Blind Willie McTell who wrote Statesboro Blues in 1928. The original version is much different than the cover The Allman Bros made so popular. Statesboro is one of the few places that Sherman didn't burn to the ground on his march from Atlanta to Savannah. Just thought you'd like to know.

Chenille bedspreads were a cottage industry. They were made in the home and sold on the side of the road. Freshly grown produce, honey, and other goods would have sold as well. The Interstate Highways killed all that. The US and State highways lost travelers, gas stations closed along with everything else. I thought for sure my town would make this list, but after hearing the population sizes on these towns... heck, I'm living in a metropolis next to these places.

I moved to GA a few years ago, to work with the State Department of Labor. I started in Augusta, then transferred to Macon. When I talked to people and explained where I worked, many of them believed I was rich! My job required me to travel extensively, and I covered a large portion of the middle to eastern counties, about 20 in total. I had to learn the county roads and through ways, as the only major highways were way out of the way to drive to various towns. Once I took 1-75 from Augusta to Macon, and it took nearly 3 hours. I got really spooked when it got dark, cause I couldn’t see anything! Cars would drive with their brights on, I guess to avoid striking deer, or other animals. I got to see a lot of GA, because of the traveling I did. I enjoyed my adventures, and I learned a lot about the south. Loved many of the restaurants, which weren’t here in the North. Chic-Fil-a was one of my favorites, along with Zaxby’s, Piccadilly’s, Krystal’s, and I loved shopping at The Fresh Market. Once, I was in the field, my coworker and I stopped to get something to eat at a local eatery. It appeared that we arrived the same time some men were coming in, perhaps from a mountain, to eat, and they waited patiently while I tried to figure out what to order. I felt bad when I realized I might’ve been holding up their lunch time…so polite…
