"Always turn towards a skid" is the best traffic safety rule of thumb I've dealt with. Still had an accident due to exiting a highway during a bad rainfall but ended up not getting injured at all despite to hitting the median on the passanger's side of the car while driving alone, which totaled the car. I also didn't get a ticket because one of the cops mom's happened to have an accident at that exact spot on the same day but must not have turned towards because she ended up in the hospital. Always remember to turn towards skids for traffic accidents due to slippy weather! This one should be on this list.

I am a former combat medic, current first aid instructor and avid outdoorsman. The only one I take issue with is number 6: you can indeed use snow to rehydrate, the key is to have it melt in your mouth, not your stomach… so yes, do not “eat” show to rehydrate but rather let your mouth’s warmth melt the snow before you swallow the melted snow. … side warning, it is always best to do this while active so that you do not unintentionally cool yourself even more when already struggling to stay warm. Conversely, if you are being too active, sweat is a killer, so you then really need to eat snow to help prevent sweating when you’re still active. But as soon as you stop being active, switch to melt in your mouth before swallowing.

18:38 a man is struggling to get free of quicksand. He has a blanket in front of him that he can spread out and lay across to paddle himself to safety. A jacket or even a shirt would help. If you're traveling in freezing weather, try to keep these in your vehicle: plenty of cardboard to stand or lay on. It'll keep you from freezing. A flat edge shovel for moving mud or snow if you're stuck. Lots of warm blankets(wool)Xtra clothes warm shoes and socks. Supply of emergency food and water in case you're stranded. Reflective emerg road signs so people can see you. Flashlight/Batts. First aid kit. A day pack in case you have to travel. This really FANTASTIC video! I learned so much. Thank You 🫶 👍

The 911 tip is so accurate. I'm a former 911 operator and alot of callers go straight into their emergent details and I had to plead for them to answer where they are. You can give me your entire life story but I can't get help started until I know where to send them. Also, contrary to popular belief, we cannot track you like they show on TV. So the assumption that I will already know where you are is not a good assumption and can potentially lead to your death. First things first, give your location.

You should look up the story about Kitty Genovese. Her attack was sensationalized by the press and almost everything reported was false or inaccurate. Several people called the police and Kitty's neighbor left her apartment in her pajamas to help Kitty even though she didn't know if the killer had left or was still attacking. There's a really good documentary called The Witness.

@ananolastname1605

I know somebody else said that it was somebody named Kitty but perhaps they're wrong on that part because I know I've heard a story where there was a woman that was screaming out for help and people heard her but nobody called the cops or anything and they all had their different reasons you know either they thought somebody else would or there was moments where she had stopped screaming at times and so they figured that everything was okay until she started screaming again and then somebody said that they were just going to wait and see if the screaming was still happening in the morning however by that point it was too late I'm just curious if the story that you're talking about pertain to a woman who got locked into a bathroom closet that there was the water heater in it and she was unable to get out and was screaming for help and broke off a pipe from the water heater to try to break her way out however when she did that water started spraying in the water was freezing cold so ultimately she ended up dying from hypothermia cuz she was unable to escape the water being sprayed all over her and she eventually was found when she did not check out. Really sad story.

@Ana The story about the woman screaming on the sidewalk was Kitty Genovese. The newspaper reported that people saw it happen and did nothing. But that was a lie. Only a few people actually saw what was happening, but many more heard the screams and they did call the police. The story about the woman getting stuck in the closet is something different.

As an ophthalmologist myself, I must say #26 is wrong. It's not if you see a "white pupil", it's if there's one pupil reflecting light, and the other doesn't. The one that doesn't reflect light is the sick eye. In the case of the pic of the baby shown, the sick eye is the "black pupil" eye

Another tip: chicken and pork need to be fully cooked to eat. With beef, if it’s ground, don’t eat it rare like you can with steak, this is because most of the food born bacteria exists on the surface and during the grinding process, the surface bacteria gets pushed throughout the ground meat.

The bit about heart attack signs left one out: Incessant, unexplained, severe and sudden heartburn. If you’re not prone to heartburn and haven’t eaten anything that can tend to cause you heartburn when combined with the other symptoms mentioned means it could be urgent and you need immediate assistance. This may seem like nitpicking but someone could possibly not realize they’re in danger because they don’t know heartburn’s a potential symptom so it’s “probably nothing”. Knowing this fact saved my life. ALSO: Adding to the fact about not mixing bleach and ammonia, do not clean up urine with bleach for this exact reason. There can be tons of ammonia in urine, especially pet urine. I learned that the hard way when I chlorine gassed myself trying to clean up a pet mess. I’m just gonna keep adding to this every time I catch something: If you are actively suicidal please call 911. If you are feeling suicidal but feel as if just talking to someone would help, call 988. If you call the “emergency hotlines” attached to some psychiatric hospitals the person who answers may not be properly trained to communicate with suicidal people and could threaten to send police to your house (if you’ve given them your address) even if you’re no longer suicidal. 911 and 988 (the National Suicide Hotline) operators are all trained on how to speak to suicidal individuals. Source? My own, personal experiences.

If you are lost and need to make a camp fire. And if you supply matches and a bag of potato chips, use them to make a fire. Make a small pile of potato chips and light a match. The chips make a good fire starter, because the oil on the chips catches fire quickly enough for you to make a camp fire.

You forgot tetanus or lockjaw, which is one of the most serious, painful and life-threatening conditions. Most people falsely associate it with stepping on a rusty nail. You can more likely get tetanus if a wet / rotten splinter penetrates your tissue deep enough to introduce the bacteria that cause tetanus into the bloodstream. The bacteria thrive in fertile soil and damp environments, and once in your bloodstream, they release a powerful neurotoxin that causes muscle spasms strong enough to break your bones. Please keep up to date on your tetanus shots people!

If u are walking and think ur being followed cross the street and then keep an eye behind u . If u notice the same person behind u, they could be following u . Get to public place at a fast pace , and call for help and stay at the public location til help arrives and give a description of person as best u can so the police can keep an eye out for similar problems with other people in the area. I live and have lived in some rough areas of town and have been followed and have used this method several times and I believe it saved me from being mugged or raped or other crimes . Remember if someone u don’t know acts to friendly that is suspect usually they have a motive for being that friendly and ofcourse never accept anything from someone on street u don’t know be polite but firm .

It did nothing or at least it doesn't feel like it, but it's not like I can just stop taking it, I have to have a doctor help me get off of it otherwise withdrawal symptoms happen and I do not want that again. My mom said that it made me look more alert, awake and a bit better, but honestly, I think my depression got worse after she said that to my hematologist ;-; I just want to go to sleep and never wake up again and because my THREE prescribed medicines for it doesn't help and they can't go up or down on them and talking about it only makes me even more angry than I already was makes me even more angry and sad... I don't know what to do, but it's not like I can k1ll myself anyways. The Universe and God won't let me... Apparently I'm the Chosen One, God's Living Word, Moon Goddess, strongest angel, smartest and wisest being, God's right-hand angel(use to be. and fk Him), and The Protector and Server of all living things(that's what I call a true Mom... huh, like Mother Nature... If you have to go, grab the person from behind so their panic-induced grabbing won't affect you as much. Related to #66, take off your shoes, socks and pants if you find yourself treading water. It will be a lot easier to tread and swim.

If you run out of gas in an emergency and need to go another 10 miles, pee or dump a bottle of water into your tank. The reason it works is because gasoline is lighter than water so it floats on the surface, raising the fuel in the tank so you can drive it. Of course you start off slow, so as not to slosh the fuel around too much.

I used to act as "designated driver" for my former hubster...dropping him off & cheerfully picking him when he decided to come home...until one night (after we became parents) I was driving to pick him up and had I been in any but the curb lane, I would have likely been struck head on by a car which broke through a divided highway to careen towards oncoming traffic. I had our two sons in the car: a two year old and an infant. A light switch moment as I realized I was NOT being a responsible mother as I realized most of the cars during these small hours were being driven by drunks. That was the LAST TIME I drove him, as I refused to endanger our cherished boys.

Yes, & I see your point but you're leaving a lot of important elements out of the equation, such as the many fatalities in which a seat belt fails to save someone where the entire issue was irrelevant, such as if a rock came through your windshield, or your car flipped multiple times, or a pipe or board comes off a truck in front of you on the freeway or comes in the back windshiels from one behind you at a stop, & there are a lot of other types of accidents that cause fatalities that a seat belt can't save someone. There are even a limited number of accidents in which seatbelt causes fatalities the person may have survived if not wearing one, but if a person has any sense they'll play the odds & wear one.

@@machupikachu1085 Hey there, I'll share an excerpt from an interview with Ben Sherwood, the author of "The Survivors Club." Q: You write in your book about attending an FAA workshop on surviving plane crashes. What were some of the most important tips that you can recall from that session? A: I learned several things. There's the five-row rule. When a professor in England, Ed Galea, analyzed the seating charts of more than 100 plane crashes and interviewed 1,900 survivors and 155 cabin-crew members, he discovered that survivors usually move an average of five rows before they can get off a burning aircraft. That's the cutoff. In his view - and he's done a lot of statistical analysis - the people who are most likely to survive a plane crash are people who are sitting right next to the exit row or one row away. Not a particular exit row but any exit row. That's the person most likely to survive. Beyond a five-row cutoff from the exit, your chances, in his view, are greatly reduced. So the first thing I think about when I get on a plane or when I'm making my flight plans is, "Where am I sitting?" Let's just hope neither one of us ever has to test these theories, right? Happy New Year!

If you are stuck in a train, that is a) in a tunnel b) was driving upwards and c) some part of the train caught fire. You need to get out of the train and then run downwards(!) in direction of the source of the fire. While this may seem counterintuitiv at first, running upwards and hence away from the source of fire, means running in the same direction the smoke goes. If the end of the tunnel isn't near, the smoke will suffocate you. If you run downwards, you are safe once you passed the source of the fire. This incident happened in Germany known as the "Kaprun disaster" with 155 people dead.

For many years women were not thought to fall victims to heart attacks. This is ridiculously untrue. Heart disease does not pick and choose. Sometimes, to this day, it’s difficult to convince doctors that women can and do have heart attacks. And as with men, young women are capable of having heart attacks!! Please learn the symptoms of heart attack in women because we don’t always have the same symptoms. I didn’t have arm pain, I didn’t have nausea, didn’t sweat, but I did have painful pressure right in the middle of my chest. When I had my cardiac cath the doc found a vessel (right ascending coronary artery) almost completely blocked. It could have been deadly if I didn’t insist on going to the hospital. Don’t try and brush off chest pain. Yes it can be stress or GERD! But if you aren’t living a stressful life and you aren’t having problems after eating, start looking 👀 in the direction of the ticker! Check the American Heart Association website for more information!!

In A perfect world, every room SHOULD have some form of fire-suppression, or at least in a centrally-accessible passage or hall, to stop smaller fires. I switch my pad off when I'm not using it, because it doesn't rule my life. A swan once tried to threaten me, so I put my arms out to look bigger, so it backed off, and the same applies to a goose. That crouching idea about lightning is not a good idea, just run away, from the area and any tree or metal large object. I've done that twice and avoiding being hit. UK evelators don't fall unless the building they are in is in catastrophic collapse, because they have safety brakes built into their systems, but they might still go a little too fast, in which case stand or sit against the sides and get out as soon as you can, reporting the fault and if you get stuck in an elevator in the UK, call the 999 emergency service number which is free, and ask for the fire brigade, and an ambulance if you are injured. Always use a safety chain on your door, if someone comes to your door, even if you are expecting them. Sit in the middle carriage of a train, to avoid the worst effects of a train crash. Do not try to jump out of or on to a moving train, car or bus, etc, even if an entrance to the vehicle is open. Don't jump on your car if it's being stolen, you could be injured or killed. Instead immediately report it and send a video of it being driven away to the police.

This seems like the opposite of what you would want to do because it's natural to try to want to turn the other way to straighten your path. However you first need to turn into the direction you're sliding because that will allow your wheels to align with the path. Even though I know this I still have to remind myself when driving during winter storms it's so natural to want to turn the wheel right to straighten out when you actually need to first turn it line the tires up with the tracks being made by the slide

Edited to emphasize: THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY SITUATIONS THAT REQUIRE A TOURNIQUET!!! A tourniquet can absolutely save a life, it just needs to be applied ONLY to save a life. May need to edit this ‘fact’ in case someone remembers it at the wrong time. Previously it was thought that any major cut was in need of a tourniquet, but now it’s only if direct pressure doesn’t work, or you need to focus on airways/breathing, when the limb no longer matters in order to save the life. IE if someone’s leg is crushed and the femur is gushing blood, repositioning the leg won’t help. A tourniquet shutting off the femoral is the only option at that point or they will almost certainly bleed out. Please please check the misinformation.
