By the time Bela did the film version of Dracula, he had performed the role hundreds of times on Broadway and across the country. He knew precisely what he was saying, which is obvious. Plus, there’s at least one interview from the period wherein he speaks English very fluently, albeit with his legendary accent.
@madsdahlc

Yes belas accent was his own hungarian . Remember Bela dis speak a word of english when arrived in the united states . Also if things had been different. He most properbly would newer have migrated to the us . But following the collapse of Bela Khuns hungerian soviet repuplic in 1919(Bela Khun fleed to the soviet union , where Stalin had killed in the 1930'es) .A New conservative regime took power . The new regime started to persicute leftist and trade unionist . And Lagosi belonged to the those groups. He fleed the country. First to germany and later to the united states . Bela Lagosi was 49 . When he the dracula movie in 1931 . But he is one most famous cultural exports coming out of Hungary . I think the Hungarians should do more to honor their most famous sons. He deserves a statue or street named after him in Budapest.

FINALLY, THANK YOU for giving Van Helsing some much due credit. I too think it came out at the perfect time, as I had just got into the Universal Monsters a couple of years beforehand. Also, wow, had no idea about The Invitation's Dracula ties. I'll have to check that out ASAP. You got me to check out Cobweb around Halloween time, so thanks for that. This list is pretty perfect. I might swap out a Nosferatu & Blood for Dracula for something like: The 1977 BBC Count Dracula with Louis Jourdan. Scars of Dracula, which I seem to be in that minority that likes it more than most. Same with House of Dracula. Mark of the Vampire & Return of the Vampire are also my honorary Draculas, as Bela is basically playing the part in both.

I don't know if you've seen it or not, but "Love at first Bite"(1979) was a really good romcom Dracula film starring George Hamilton as the count, and he plays it as a serious take on Bela Lugosi's portrayal that really works in the comedy settings the film puts him through. Arte Johnson kills it as Renfield.

Agree with No.1. Coppola’s Dracula as a movie definitely top pick because of everything: cinematography, direction, set designs, music, energy, story, makeup, Gary Oldman’s performance, Dracula’s shapeshifting, and characters in general (minus Keanu’s performance/character -he’s miscast but like he’s supporting character so it passable ). What is really fascinating is that top Dracula movies on this list are those made before 2000s. It’s been decades since early 2000s and all those Dracula movies just keep on flopping and not doing great while those old ones were like big event movies which really did great and changed the whole genre. 🤔

This is a good run down of Dracula films obviously. Glad you have praise to Son of Dracula from 1943. Lon Jr. is miscast as Alucard/Dracula, but otherwise, it's a terrific Southern US Gothic horror film. Return of Dracula from 1958 starting Francis Lederer as Dracula in the US under an assumed name is often overlooked unfairly. Being released the same year as Hortorvof Dracula didn't help, but definitely search it out if you don't know it. The 1960 film Brides of Dracula really concerns the vampire Baron Meinster. He is evidently a victim of Dracula, played perfectly by David Peel. It features some of the best Van Helsing/vampire confrontations ever, esp. the conclusion. Cushing is the definitive Van Helsing. Can't agree with the Coppola/Gary Oldman Dracula. To me, a curious blend of piety and perversion with a very odd version of Dracula.

I've not seen all the "newer" Dracula movies that you have, Daniel, but the originally titled "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (before Coppola purchased the rights to the title in the 1990's) from 1974 is easily in my top 5. Jack Palance has his menacing level turned to 11 and is quite frightening as Dracula! Directed and produced by Dan Curtis (TV's Dark Shadows; The Night Stalker; Trilogy of Terror) and written by Richard Matheson (I am Legend; Duel; The Incredible Shrinking Man; etc...). This one really spooked me as a 10 year old when it first aired on network TV in 1974.

Spanish 1931 version is definitely worth a watch. The movie itself is a superior movie to 1931 English version. Also Lupita Tovar as Mina/Eva is superior to Chandler any day. But Lugosi’s Dracula is def.superior to Spanish actor and English-language Renfield is also better.

Always love Daniel's lists - and not just because his top 3 is my top 3. I might even put Dracula Has Risen From the Grave a little higher. Love that movie. The story and characterization is much deeper than most Dracula movies. There are no wasted characters. Everyone has a purpose and is fleshed out perfectly.

This might sound weird, but my favorite Dracula movie is Count Dracula 1970 by Jesus Franco. The music and zoomy cinematography sell it for me! Also, Dracula actually looks like how he's described in the book! Another one I love is Count Dracula 1977, which is the most faithful adaptation to date!

I liked the cheesy "Dracula 2000", it had an interesting interpretation of the characters. And a fun fact about Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's "Nosferatu", the silent movie (1922): It is the original source of Vampires sunlight sensitivity! Before that Movie the Mythos of Vampires were all daywalkers! Another fun fact: It was the first Vampire Movie in the World and the first movie with a pre media marketing campaign, before release, with a mystrious ad series in the local newspapers and it inspired many other forms of Art of their time. There was an Exibition last Year 2022 (in Berlin, Germany) about it, since Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror premiered in 1922 at the Marmorsaal (Marble Hall) at the Berlin Zoo.

The best two Dracula movies ever are (Horror of) Dracula (1958) and Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968) both Hammer films with Christopher Lee as Dracula. The latter is actually a lot scarier as Christopher Lee is a lot more menacing and frightening.

The only thing that keeps me from agreeing with your number one pick was Coppola’s inexcusable miscasting of Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder who failed in their roles completely, IMO.

Keanu was miscast for sure, but still his character is not main character in the movie anyway and his character is still serviceable- his Jonathan is not a jerk or isn’t killed off like in a lot of adaptations🤷🏼‍♀️ Winona did pretty well.

Prince of Darkness is certainly one of the best hammer Dracula resurrections -- but I have a real, unrepentent soft spot for Dracula A.D.! Taste the Blood of Dracula feels good because they were sort of realising it was time to shake up the formula a little. Dracula was upset that the ceremony didn't go according to plan I guess -- they were all supposed to drink the blood concoction, and I don't know if the servant would have died if they had or not. Still, it doesn't make sense in terms of continuity with the other filnmms at least, because in every single one of them it's made pretty clear that Dracula doesn't give a damn about any of his servants. Oh well, the Hammer movies weren't big on continuity anyway. Lugosi has one of my favourite Dracula lines: "To die! To truly be dead! that would be glorious!" While I might prefer hammer in general Bela is the iconic Dracula for a reason. And he's the only one with a somewaht correct accent, too! The jesus Franco version of Dracula is interesting. Maybe not a great film exactly, but interesting. He managed to get Christopher lee to play the role again by convincing him that he would stick close to Stoker's novel. it has one or two other actors you might've seen in hammer movies, too, from what I remember. Ah yes, Herbert Lon is in it as Van helsing...and Klaus Kinski as Renfield! If you haven't watched it, I wouldn't necessarily set my expectations too high, but it's totally worth a watch.

Good list, but I do have to disagree on Van Helsing in the original Universal Dracula film. I really like Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing and his similar roles in other Universal monster films, although I have to do agree on Harker being dull there! It was great seeing Langella's Dracula performance getting some love. I saw it very young on TV back in the early 80s I'm guessing, since it came out in 79. He was great there, although why they swapped Mina with Lucy, I've never understood.

This is a solid list, aside from Van Helsing, which I loathe. I can appreciate that you saw it as a kid, and it gives you nostalgic feelings, but it's SUCH a bad movie. The costumes and sets are gorgeous though, I'll give it that. An honorable mention needs to go to Last Voyage of the Demeter, which I thought was a really cool exploration of one chapter of Stoker's novel. Also, Dracula: Prince of Darkness is pretty high on my list. I haven't seen the Invitation yet, but I'll definitely check it out based on your recommendation!
