Hi everyone, my apologies for my brain sending Louis Vuitton instead of Louboutins out of my mouth in this video. I'm very aware they are two different brands but Louboutin never comes up in conversations with people in my everyday life while Louis Vuitton does (maybe because my fave perfume is Louis Vuitton), so I think my tired brain that day defaulted to what it's more used to saying.🤪 Also doesn't help that they sound so similar lol

Yay! Love the video! I also tend towards red/green contrast plants though not very many philodendrons (not fond of poles). Fave red back is a Begonia “Flame”-something.

I struggle with the “must stay evenly moist” plants! I bought some at the last local plant sale, including a White Fusion Calathea because it was cheap, so I decided it was worth a try! I got a very small, plain green prayer plant over a month ago and noticed this week that it was yellowing, so I decided the small pot it was in was the problem and potted it up. I got large lemon lime on clearance at Lowe’s last week, so I am definitely getting a crash course in them! 😂 I know some people say LECA and/or pon is good for the plants that don’t like to dry out.

I have a similar fondness for plants with red or purple undersides! I remember watching you talk about such a plant and bringing it close to your face---I left a comment, at the time, remarking that I had noticed that your hair color and many, many of your plants share those burgundy hues. (I have a favorite of mine to add to your list: Calathea (Geoppertia) rufibarba. It is red-purple and so fuzzy!)

Adding from my collection- Waffle plant (cannot remember the Latin name) has waffled leaves that are almost black, dark green with very purple backs., the all purple roseopicta rosy calathea, pepperomia Santorini (I think? top of leaf is silver), philodendron Kathleen (leaves start out coppery red, turn green but veins stay red on the back), and for top only red- the fittonia red (veined). Of course, my alocasias. I think that is it? As for your cuprea, take a look at how Sydney Plant Guy has his- it is now under direct artificial light. Loooooved this video- all of them, really.

Another one is Philodendron Subhastatum, but my very favourite is the Peperomia Verticillata Red Log. I think you need one! Oh also I just remembered the Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant and the Shady Lady Goldfish Plant. Pink Dragon Alocasia are very reddish-purple on the back too.

Thanks Drea, great content..always learn something from you. I think the theory of protecting the plant from being eaten is the most plausable. The red would otherwise be protecting the white from burning than the green. Plus, the green at times is darker than the red? The other two theories dont cut the mustard at all. Agreed, it does need research. All red backed leaves are discoloured... with a u 😂 much love to all from Nix, a Brit in France xxx

What a great idea for a video, Drea. I love the look of red-back leaves when sunlight hits them. Oh, my s. Llano-Carti Road does that too; I have to drape the foliage on the rim of the cache pot to counter gravity cuz its petioles are kind of succulent and the leaves are so robust. Steve's Leaves sent me a replacement when one I ordered for a friend arrived "pruned". Haven't tried it but does anyone know if it roots in water? Fluval? Thanks.

Hi Drea, always love your videos. Re the red on leaves; I'd heard it is a form of sun block, but the ones on the back of leaves under poor light use it to trap the sunlight, not let it pass through so get more for the leaf. In sun stress its stopping it getting in to the leaf on the front. Makes sense of them losing the red back when in more light, like some climbing Philo's that lose the red back when higher, more mature, and getting more light, as well as your ctenanthes. All just theory for now, but interesting.
@cl0udysided0wn
@cl0udysided0wn 2 ай бұрын
ya it does seem like a combination of both sunscreen and also a sun maximizer of sorts, it just depends on whether its the front or back of the leaf as you said. i have a begonia erythrophylla that gets intensely red baby leaves that transition to green as they mature --- ive read that the red protects the delicate leaf until it is hardened-off enough for stronger sun rays.

Great video , I also LOVE ‘discolor’ plants and your Calatheas are stunning! The sunscreen theory makes a lot of sense to me. I’ve noticed that the backside colors become intenser with increased light for Alocasia, Maranta and Calathea. However, the opposite is true for climbing Philodendron. This could be because as they mature and climb up the trees, they need the additional light to continue growing whereas the others live their entire lives on the forest floor.

It’s interesting that it is the opposite in some plants than others. Often the philodendrons that have red backs will lose the red as they mature, regardless of the light intensity (like the El Choco and the Subhastatum.)

Hi!🙋🏽‍♀️ Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but Louboutin and Louis Vuitton are two different people and fashion companies. You had the correct idea of the red bottoms (Louboutin) but saying Louis Vuitton know more for their clothers and accessories (bags) with their famous LV print all over everything. Anyway LOVED this video. I'm a huge red back plant person and need more so I'll be saving this one!!😁👍🏽❤

Plants will do that under grow lights too. I have a pilea globosa that hung right under a grow light and it just turned red. So i moved it to a window and now it is green. Also my pencil cactus was right under the grow light and one day i looked under there ane it was completely orange and yellow and didn't look very happy so i moved it out of the shelf and now it is green again. So that's my experience 😊

Hmm I'm not convinced about the pigment being to protect like it is when sun stressed. From my understanding red and blue are the wavelengths most useful for photosynthesis. So when the red or purple is on the backside of the leaf this reflects this light back towards the chloroplasts after passing through to give them a second chance to absorb the useful light. This just makes more sense to me. When the red pigment is on the front of the leaf then it reduces the amount absorbed and prevents sun stress. I'd imagine they probably reflect infrared too, so it'd be interesting to see if that it correct.

I would have thought the red v light thing worked a bit like variegation? (A white leaf can't photosynthesise) So a leaf on the forest floor which is unlikely to get much sun will only try photosynthesis on the parts of the leaf most likely to get sun- the top- Hence the underside is red. Put that same leaf in bright sun and it can now photosynthesise on both sides and so the red fades, whereas the ones who are usually green which get too much sun turn red to achieve the same goal as the ground ones? Sunscreen for them seems to be more about how much sun a leaf can process, just like water and nutrients- its more about what they can process than what we're giving them?

@@AlohaPlantLife I'm sorry your week was stressful. I hope it's better now and even greater next week. Don't worry about the pronunciation of those fashion brands. They are indeed similar, plus no one is clicking on videos about plants hoping to learn about red-heeled shoes and leather cases. That was a bonus. Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it, but I did so you can hear it from someone who appreciates you and wants to help instead of someone who might use it to try to make you feel bad. I really liked the video! While I don't love super colorful ones, I do admire a green-with-burgundy or green-with-eggplant plant!
