I enjoyed Death Becomes Her and Very Bad Things. Also, Idiocracy is the most frightening, but also funny at the same time
@Raz.C4 жыл бұрын
The thing about idiocracy is that it's based on the flawed assumption that nurture plays no developmental role and that nature is all. In the real world, things are rarely that _black and white._ In the real world, nature AND nurture play their roles in the development of children and dumb people CAN have smart children. This is particularly true of advanced nations (but not the usa), where educational opportunities aren't limited by family wealth; where admission to university isn't determined by whether you can afford to go, but rather if your grades are are good enough to warrant a (free) tertiary education. In fact, I think the usa is the ONLY developed nation where a smart kid might have his/ her dreams of going to university quashed for no other reason than that they can't afford tuition. So, while the film _Idiocracy_ might indeed be a look into the future of the usa, I would like to reassure you that no such thing will happen to the rest of the world.

There's Dark Comedy, then there's Horror Comedy - I think they're two very different genres. For example, I think Bubba Ho-Tep, American Werewolf and Army of Darkness are classic Horror Comedies, but Throw Momma from the Train was really more of a Comedy with a shadow. Not really dark, like many on this Mojo list. The Wolf of Snow Hollow I think is debatable, but because I enjoyed it so much, I'll label it a Dark Horror Comedy. That Father of the Year movie, though, just wow. Magnificent.

Yeah death to smoochy doesn't make the list for me either. I just didn't find it to be funny
@wanbaclone4 жыл бұрын
Death to Smoochy is WONDERFUL. I don't understand why - to this day - people hate it so much. Robin Williams is cast perfectly as an unhinged Rainbow Randolph. Ed Norton adds gut-busting comedic flourishes to what is essentially a straight man performance. Catherine Keener is predictably good. Danny DeVito's direction is snappy and fast paced, and his acting reminds me of Jerry Stiller in Zoolander - but without the schmaltzy redemption arc. It prefigures his renaissance in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Death to Smoochy's problem, I think, is that it came out at the wrong time, the year after 9/11. No one was looking for a black comedy. Also, it comes too late to be timely to 90s children's television, and it is too early for how sniveling and insipid children's television became. Jon Stewart was a nobody at the time. (It doesn't help that Stewart has since mentioned that he thinks Smooch is a terrible movie.) Let's not forget that Williams starred in a string of darker films, playing against his type, with One Hour Photo and Insomnia both being released the same year as Smoochy. While Williams isn't playing against type, so to speak, in Smoochy, most people knew the movie was a dark comedy and lumped it in with these other films. If I had to take a stab and why Smoochy has never really found a true cult following, I'd probably point to a line from an uncharacteristically positive review of the movie in The Village Voice from 2002: "The film has the distinction of being made for no discernible demographic. Who could be the audience for this impressively designed, unrelentingly foulmouthed, exuberantly mean-spirited, and increasingly violent send-up of kids’ television?" You could probably argue it is the same demographic that loves The Big Lebowski and Superbad. Smoochy doesn't measure up to the "cool" of those movies though. It doesn't Michael Cera or The Coen Brothers. Sadly, I think Death to Smoochy will likely continue to be overlooked.

I relate to Cable Guy's character. I think I've read into relationships with people too much and came on too strong. We spend alot of time to ourselves and struggle making friends. It's a tough ordeal.

Seek out empaths and good listeners in your friendships! Sometimes “weird" outgoing people are a great friend to those that overcompensate or are eager (and/or also shy)!

@@M3PH1ST0PH0LES With me it's like it's goes both ways. I've always been a shy timid person. But if I run into someone that makes me feel comfortable I come out my shell and then I think I overdo it. So I think my best course of action is probably to not try at all and just keep people at a distance unless an opportunity comes that I feel is worth it and so far I'd say it's worked for me. Coming to terms with my loneliness and social poverty has made easier I'd say. I don't get as mad or sad about it as I used to. I don't remember when it happened exactly, maybe last year or something, but that's gotta be what it is. I think I've just come to terms with it. That must be why it doesn't bother me as much anymore. Also knowing at the end of the day I can always dream of better. Dream of having someone who loves me. That helps I think. All this stuff might not work for anyone else but it's been working for me. Just not dwelling on it basically I'd say. But thanks for the advice.

a bit surprised you didn't include BEETLEJUICE, but pleasingly amazed that your no.1 was a black-and white from 50+ years ago, and that you'd heard of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. But what of THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1939), MY LEARNED FRIEND, MURDER,HE SAYS, KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, THE LADYKILLERS (1955), SOME LIKE IT HOT

Not even a honourable mention to Throw Momma From the Train?

Heathers + Pump Up The Volume were produced before I was in high school, but they were made for my time in high school and carried me through. Also, lack of Harold and Maude on this list is a crime, and I will be contacting the authorities.

Def not for a first date! Lol uncomfortable af, we were expecting something like the Mask. I love dark comedies tho, so I should watch again on my own, I don't remember much except wishing it was over so I could go home!

That's a Horror Comedy, not really a dark comedy. Just because its gothic in nature doesn't make it 'dark comedy', I think.

I've been waiting for a dark comedy list. Genius. Thank you

I watched Parasite with my mom two days ago and...my mind hasn't still processed the whole movie. It was really good though, I was just not prepared at the end of it, holy shit.

Yay someone's talking about Election! That's one of my favorite movies. And YES Observe and Report is an excellent movie. It's a shame more people don't know about it.

For dark comedy movies, I'd have to go with Beetlejuice!
