First and foremost, I feel far more sympathy for people who have never experienced financial stability than those who’ve had it - and then some - and lost it all. However, for me the story of Gary Coleman is the most tragic. He got screwed by his own parents, endured a lifetime of bullying due to his small stature, and ended up working as a security guard at the backlot of the studio where his childhood stardom began. I felt genuine sadness when I learned of his untimely death. TLC comes a close second.

When approached by fans the only thing she could say was “I’m just coming down from a psychotic break”. She did check herself in to a hospital. That girl has been so haunted by her mental health it’s hard to not feel bad for her.

The way this channel and others talk about drugs as “substance abuse disorder” and call in “sustained substance use” rather than addiction or drug abuse makes it sound like these people never had a choice to start using, and makes them into powerless victims of a “disease.” It’s the only “disease” where you get to make the conscious choice to never have. I grew up around drugs and thought it was normal. But I also watched relatives destroy lives for it and consciously chose to not start. I watched relatives of mine say they couldn’t help themselves and that it was a “disease,” and I got to deal with being called a shitty person when I reached the limit of help I was willing to offer since I was “abandoning” people who were “sick” and “couldn’t help themselves because they have a disease.” They made the CHOICE to start, and I’ the bad one for it. They’re disempowered to do anything since they’ve been told for years now that it’s not their fault as their kids suffer until choosing to follow in their footsteps. I’ve gone no-contact, even with my mother, and will deal with being called a bad person and a bad daughter. I don’t allow that shit into my life, even if that means kicking out people that this channel sees as poor victims who should have my support. If they don’t want to get help, then I don’t care what happens to them, and I don’t care where they end up, and they should’t get financial support that they’ll blow up their noses.

But once the addiction is there, it truly becomes a disease in the sense that you really don't feel like you have a choice anymore but to keep taking it. Of course that's not true but that's what it does to you and that's how it feels. I'm speaking from experience with substance addiction but the kicker is, like you said, whether or not people WANT to be helped, or even recognize that they have a problem. The last part is the trickiest because people are never more angry than when confronted with uncomfortable truths about themselves.

Dana Plato was commoditized her entire life. She was an accomplished figure skater until her showbiz mother forced her to be an actress. She was a childhood victim of SA. When she was a teenager and became pregnant it was through a relationship with an older guy who retrospect preyed on her. Even her suicide was after being ridiculed on the Stern show. Her story is remarkably similar to Amanda Peterson, the actress from "Can't Buy Me Love."

Reynolds was somewhat a victim of "golden touch syndrome", where Hollywood producers thought that he had the golden touch and that just casting him in a movie would guarantee success. They didn't understand that the underlying movie has to be solid, or it doesn't matter how popular the star is. Which goes along with what I've said for years: Studio executives are incapable of judging quality. To them, every movie, no matter how badly written or made, is exactly the same quality to them, and they have absolutely no idea why one movie is a hit and another one bombs.

Amanda has Bipolar Disorder, and without someone to really care (Her parents only spent her money and ignored her mental heath) things like that happens. As someone who lives with bipolar disorder, I wouldn't be here, alive, without the suport I have from my family, and the worst part is that almost no one is talking about this issue, people don't know hot to react, or what to do, when they see someone in a maniac episode. I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people who disagree with me, but I do understand how many of these stories (and many others like them) happen. I feel that living paycheck to paycheck before suddenly swimming in wealth only increases the chances of something like this happening. Also, for those who don't lose their money to decisions with drugs and/or alcohol, using the money for "retail therapy" can quickly get as out of control as any other addiction... especially drugs or alcohol. The time to start learning how to live with a surplus of money, assuming you didn't have a chance to learn growing up, is the first moment that you realize you are going to have expendable income... not when you realize months, or years, into the problem. While it isn't unheard of regaining control of your financial situation after digging a deep hole, it is very difficult and requires asking multiples of people for help... and admitting to yourself, before it is to late, that you need help.

People have to learn that no matter if they're swimming in wealth now, there is no guarantee that that will continue into the future. In fact, chances are that it won't. So if you have a lot of money now, put it away for the future! People have to learn that you can also out spend any amount that you earn. The only one I have empathy for is Gary Coleman. His parents squandered his fortune, he was just a child. He didn’t act gluttonous with his money. Poor thing worked his childhood and young adulthood away just to have adoptive parents, financial team, agents and lawyers who did not protect his future and robbed him blind. He already had huge medical bills to cover most of his life due to dialysis and a couple failed transplants. It was so sad when he passed at such a young age. At least he’s at peace now, no one else can hurt or let him down.

Reynolds was a great guy but here's the truth. He ran off Sally Field. That's like whiffing at being Gwen Stefani's bf. You can be a decent, charismatic guy and at the same make poisonous decisions people of substance can't look past. This why you shouldn't screw them over. In the last 15 years of his life Reynolds repeatedly discussed in interviews how he messed up with Sally. Eh, there's a give and take to it. My mother had a 162 IQ and drank herself to death in a multi-million $ estate in Los Feliz. When my ex and I split up the way I dealt with missing her continuously was to drink heavily. She and I were extremely close and not having her around was like having my arm FN sawed off. I made the choice but you can also argue this choice was influenced by what I was around constantly as a kid. My sister never touched a drop and went to Harvard (seriously). Maybe she's the better person. Maybe she had better opportunities because she's certainly smarter than me. I believe substance abuse is similar to falling in love: timing is part of it, convenience, background, etc. It's probably a combination, not all one thing or another. Don't be quick to condemn.

and yes, it is a disorder. the brains of people who are addicts, have been addicts, and are more likely to become addicts are proven to be different than those who arent or who are less likely to be. theres also a strong genetic component and comorbidies with other disorders. i.e having ADHD makes you more likely to become an addict due to how the brain is wired. having a parent who battles addiction makes you at higher risk for developing an addiction. its not all coke and cough medicine. it can be pain killers from an injury you never stop taking, insomina that leads to a reliance on caffine. the feeling you get when an item you purchased gets delivered. the hope at a lotto ticket or casino game. and suddenly youre in debt up to your eyeballs and borrowing money from your grandkids to cover you until your check comes in. or maybe you got rich too fast or too young and dont know how to track spending and balance a checkbook. maybe you were 15 and had guys twice your age knocking on your door saying they could help your career. maybe you were trying to fit in. maybe you were terrified you were a one hit wonder and desperate for inspiration.

There is a HUGE difference between making MILLIONS by working hard building up your business and by being an entertainer or sports person or whatever. I feel that if you give your blood, sweat and tears to building up a business and then become successful, you have tendencies to want to keep that business moving forward and upwards. I can only speak for myself but I have been blessed by putting in the effort, I am now semi retired at 43 and am enjoying life at its fullest with traveling and the taste of the good life BUT I also have the ‘smarts’ to know how to handle my finances AND I have ZERO concerns of going broke so…YES, hard work can pay off but having common sense and intelligence is a key to not have any of these issues happen to you and hopefully those who happen to be able to get to the point of financial stability…stay focused and don’t overstep your boundaries. Just my opinion. 🤷‍♀️👍🇺🇸

For me the most moving story was Burt Reynolds. He might have been "broke" in the end but he was rich with friends. Kudo's to his neighbor who freaking bought Burt's mansion and basically let him live there so he wouldn't have to move out of his home in old age. A true good person.
