Abbey Road first Japan pressing. That CD was going for 20K in its heyday. It is still considered by many to be the best sounding version of that title. I have it. I paid 20 bucks when it first came out. It was packaged in a blister package with an OBI. It contains all the lyrics in both Japanese and English.

CDs are great sellers. Cheap to buy(usually), easy to list and easy to ship. I bought 2000 mostly import classical music CDs from 1984 to mid 90s for 400 bucks and 100+ 90s hiphop/rap CDs for only 30 bucks. Several sold for as little as 3 but some have sold for as much as 100+ dollars while most got for 5 to 25. I use card board as stiffeners taped to both sides and then shipped in padded envelopes with zero issues. Its a great way to make use of excess card board you might have laying around. Buy a cheap paper cutting board and make a bunch of stiffeners when you can.

It drives me nuts when people say the CD format is "dead". CDs are not dead... CD even stands for "Cheated Death". CDs (including CDRs & CDRWs) and MDs (especially Hi-MDs) are the best formats ever. Vinyl LPs and cassettes are great for nostalgia (I grew up with both, so I have a wee soft spot for both, especially tapes, even 8-tracks), but let's face it - they sound like crap with all the surface noise (snaps crackles & pops - is it a record, or a bowl of Rice Krispies?) and tape hiss, not to mention the capacity restrictions and physical vulnerabilities. The most redeeming quality of the vinyl LP, however, is the album art - full size, allowing appreciation of finer detail. I tell ya, if they could package CDs in cases closer to LP size, with recordable/edit options of MD (divide/combine tracks, move tracks, name/rename tracks/disc, erase/hide tracks) and the capacity options of double-length cassettes (100-120 mins or slightly more per disc), you'd have a winning format across the board.

Hello Don. Great to see someone such as yourself talking about C.D.s and how rare they are. I sold all of my vinyl to a crab fisherman for over 30,000 in 1987. I already had a few rare CDs back in the early days when Japan started to make them. Also, American CDs are made in Japan but sold in America. Anyway. I had over 4000 CDs. After being on eBay for 21 years now I am down to around 28,000 in stock. I am so glad a guy like you started to go on KZbin and talk about CDs because I hate the way the record stores closed down and destroyed a wonderful adventure of collecting music. I have Subscribed so now I will be watching you from now on. Great video. All The Best Don.

I used to sell cds on Ebay and my best selling cds were old school rap cds. Mostly down south artists from Memphis TN and surrounding areas were the most sought after. Some of those OOP hip hop cds would bring in hundreds of dollars each. Sadly cds like that are hard to find in the wild with all the used physical media stores closing down 😢

Technically CDs are still the it format. This addresses the same problem that Hollywood is having when all the major companies are putting their TV shows and movies on streaming services. A download is nice, but getting the hard copy is worth paying for in the long run. What I appreciate about this video is that you actually did the research..... I've been buying stuff on eBay since 2004, that's a good 20 years, and eBay really is the king of second hand shopping. The same thing applies to movies as much as it does for CDs, but THE best way to build up your collection is going on the store locator and looking up shops like Second Sale and Declutter, and they rarely send you the wrong disc or movie. They'll list great artists and movies for five, six, seven dollars, and I've done this countless times when I've gotten onto a second hand seller and grabbed four, five, six movies or CDs a pop. Now what you're talking about is the opposite, where if you're wanting to find that specific album, don't just check the listings, check the shops that deal with older tunes. You're talking about the rare of the rarest CDs, but depending on what you're after, be willing to pay 30 60 or 70 dollars a disc, because once they're gone, they're gone, but I've got my own set of OOP discs....nice to have.

I worked with Kim Cobain, the sister of Kurt Cobain back in the 90s. I asked her to have him sign a CD, and I'd pay her $20 for it. She brought me a CD with "Kurt" written in black marker on a CD. 2 albums that were Number 1 and are hard to find and expensive: 1) Tommy- The Who With London Symphony Orchestra (with various artists). Originally released on Vinyl by Ode Records in 1972 . This was issued on cd for a short time only. 2) Dylan- Bob Dylan. Originally issued on vinyl by Columbia in 1973. Dylan changed record labels and as revenge Columbia released this album of out takes just before Dylan released his new album and began his comeback tour. When Dylan re-signed with Columbis the album was deleted. It was available for a short time on cd in Japan only,

One of the main reasons for the long boxes was to deter theft. A regular cd can easily fit in a pocket. Another reason was to try to compete with album art, which can never be beaten, but they try.

The paper inset is held together by staples, and the cover image is a separate sheet. I was given it by a friend who owned a second hand record shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. He thought the album was so awful he couldn't bear to have it in his shop! lol One of his suppliers was a journalist for one of the national Scottish newspapers, who would often bring in old review CDs. This copy had come from him, but I have no idea how he got hold of it. The album achieves notoriety because Michael Jackson sued John Oswald and the result was that all the CDs were ordered destroyed. Quite how this one survived thousands of miles away from its point of origin, is a mystery that may never be revealed. [I did speak to a Canadian collector who said that the CD belonged in a museum, such is its rarity.]

Mobile Fidelity makes those. Few months ago I found a copy of Pink Floyd The Wall from Mobile Fidelity on cd. Unfortunately the sleeve was missing and the store knew it was worth more than redbook version. I paid $60 for the two disc set. I’m glad I did, it sounds great! Just looked and today EBay has it for around 300 and Discogs lowest price $125. Someone is trying to get 75 for just the paper sleeve.

I’ve been collecting CD’s for about 20 years now. Lol, everyone else is digging in the record bins looking for a score and I’m always happy to have the cd section to myself and cheaper. I paid for most of my stereo by buying and selling cd’s.

The most expensive CD I ever bought was the 1983 edition of Platinum Blonde: Standing in the Dark for $60 back in 2002. I had wanted to get it for some years, but it always showed up on Ebay for between $60 - $80, so I bit the bullet and spent the money. So of course, in 2010, it was finally reissued and remastered on CD and you can pretty much buy it anywhere now. But I'm still glad I have the original. I also paid about the same price for Steve Kilbey: Remindlessness, also in 2002, which was also reissued, with extra tracks, later the same year! However, the cover art on the original is much better (on the reissue it came out very dark, and you can't see the details), so I'm still glad I got the original of that, as well.

Ive been collecting CDs and LP vinyl for approximately 50 years now. Tried selling some of the LPS on eBay, but they didn't sell people always wanting things for free that I would rather keep than giving them away. I have a huge CD collection as well some very rare and out of print. Maybe one day I may try to list some of them to see what happens. I went to a local Record Shop with a handful of vinyl LPS in hand and was very surprised that the clerk offered me cash for records in hand. I was really not interested in selling them at the time just wanted to see what the value was when selling them to a reseller.😮

Great video thank you... But how do you know if you have valuable CD's. I have some Bang & Olufsen promo CD's. They where never released to the public and only given out if asked for at special events. As an example a special recording of Duke Ellington which was only compiled on this CD. Obviously the scarcity would not allow normal price discovery... So how do you know?

AC/DC not popular in Australia? Are you sure about that? I think they are huge everywhere.
@AndyDowling

Definitely popular but when you're pressing units for a population of 16 million in Australia in 1987 vs 242 million in the US at the same time, the relative comparison means that they were no where near as popular here in Australia versus the US.

Yeah overall very informative and interestng buy some common info missed. Did notdovery well in this country..... True they left aus after a couple albums for the uk wherethey got much bigger but they had a bloodly loyal hometown following. Some of these are postngs for bids so remember to see what actually sold flr. There is always some jerk posting asking prices WAY hgher than fesibly possible and it really relly screws with averages and perceptions of ehat they are worth. Also, Eminems SSEP was absolutly oroginly a lttle self relesed independent album

Is there any value with pressed bootleg CD's? Most of what I have were made in Italy where the copyright laws are lax. Most are from well known bands with live performances and the quality is all over the place. From near studio quality to did they record this in a bathroom? I won't sell any of them right now because they hold for me a snapshot of that point in time of my life.

The first cd i owned that rotted away was a promo prince batman cd. I also paid a ton for a velvet underground cd box set, it lasted about 5 years and little tiny pinholes started appearing and ruined it. Lots of cds i made myself in 2000 have started to rot away also, and my friend has lots of video game cds that don't work from cd rot. I started buying all my music on vinyl again. Even a guy at maxell told me cds aren't manufactured to last forever.

Interesting. Forgot about those long boxes. This clip reminds me of a few 45s I have that were free at a record store I used to frequent back in the 80s. I think I actually have three, promos of some then current bands and performers like The Smiths,Los Lobos and Lloyd Cole And The Commotions. I THINK Elliot Easton of The Cars is also on one and there are a few obscure performers as well. I think one may have four tracks on it. Should dig them out. Like your site.

Acetate CDs, CD-R with rare stuff burned on them by the artist/producer or the record company are super cool too, i have a few of them for Bjork, there’s also transcription disc from radio stations, i have a few BBC trans disc with some exclusive live performances on them, the radio used to send these CDs overseas for other radios to play their programs, they are suppose to destroy them but lots of them survived and are sold online from time to time
