I'm really annoyed that Edge of tomorrow is just an honorable mention, I was very surprised by how good this movie was, I was excepting another Oblivion (which was very decent) but it was really entertaining, as viewers we knew the issue with time but we were constantly put behind Cage's experience with the lapses, I loved that dynamics.

Edge of tommorrow was lying around in my laptop since 2014-15. Couple of weeks ago I have nothing to do so i decided to watch it. It is one of the unique sci fi action thriller movie and it's extremely underrated.

The Godfather. Considering all the obstacles they had to hurdle over, it was apparent nobody wanted the film to be made. It's success and artistic merits surpassed anybody's expectations. It is one of the best of all time. Most of the films on this list, I am not sure how high the expectation was. This list is more 'unexpected successes'. There are so many successful films that came close to never being made, whose expectation are we being defined by here?

6:25 Finn: what about the sequel trilogy? Rey: that one's garbage. TIE fighter (representing Disney): *destroys most of the Star Wars content.* Rey: sequel trilogy will do. I don't hate on it and pretty much like it, it's just that I don't like how much of a copy it is

I’m shocked that Snow White and the Sven Dwarfs isn’t mentioned. It’s a beloved movie, a treasured film that nobody that it could happen. Walt Disney took a chance on making the first animated featured film which nobody thought it can work but it did.

I would have put Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) on here, and IT (2017) as well. Sonic, because it was a surprisingly fun and easy watch. IT, because I so clearly remember people saying it didn't need to happen, and that Tim Curry's Pennywise was too iconic and no one could match up to his performance. Now it is the highest grossing horror movie.

I’m really glad that Star Wars was NUMBER1!!! I remember seeing it at the Drive-In on Hey. 98 in Durham,N.C. when I was 5 years old. Twice that summer in fact. Then waited in line for 2 hours to meet Darth Vader at South Square Mall a year or two later. Neither of those two places exist anymore. We used to play Star Wars all the time.

I think doing well in the box office is how they are mainly defining exceeding expectations for this list. I will pretty much watch Shawshank, Good Fellas & The Usual Suspects from any point in the movie if I'm flipping channels and see either of them playing. The God Father is another, but only if its not too late in the evening or the week end.

Good list. For honorable mentions, I'd suggest Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (~215M on a 15M budget, ~130m US, unheard of for a subtitled wuxia film) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (~370M on 5M budget). Paranormal Activity (~200M on 215k, with 200k being a new ending) and Blair Witch (~250M on 60k) were also big surprises but that seems to happen more with horror, where something new and fresh is often more important than big budgets or big name actors.

Oh absolutely. The only other Guy Ritchie films I had seen beforehand were both Sherlock Holmes movies (which I liked) and King Arthur (which I didn't like) so I was unaware of his style from films like Snatch. Needless to say my mind was completely blown and it quickly became my favourite film of 2020 so far!
