Hey Emma, I have one phrasal verb I don’t get it - „check up“ or „check up on“ It is better to say “I wanted to “check on you” or “… “to check up on you”? Great lesson like always 💕
@mmmEnglish_Emma3 жыл бұрын
They are very similar! Both mean to find out how someone is doing, but ‘check up on’ means to make sure that they are doing the RIGHT thing. It implies that they might be misbehaving!

There's also "fess up," which means to admit or confess something. "Who broke the vase? It's time to fess up!" Not sure which box that would go in! It's interesting that many of these "up" verbs don't have a corresponding "down" verb, or if you substitute "down" it means something rather different. "Get down" doesn't really mean the opposite of "get up," but "dress down" does connote the opposite of "dress up." Also, it's unlikely anyone would "think down" an idea or "whip down" a meal! If you want the opposite of "speed up," you have to use the antonyms of both words and say "slow down." Seems like an area of potential confusion for English learners. It's always good to see in the comments that your students are ready to buckle up and buckle down on their studies!
