It's easily Murphy's worst film after Norbit. 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I remember it coming out and leaving theaters after only a week. And this was at the height of Murphy's popularity in the 80s. So many talented people, and so incredibly unfunny. What a waste.

The Academy likes to be progressive & support diversity, but sometimes they get it wrong. Emilia Perez is a huge example. There are & will be better films representing the Trans community without making a mockery of them. I feel bad that the trans community's milestone is being given to someone that's just a horrible person. What she said was abhorrent, but people deadnaming her or treating her badly is not right either. Hopefully someone better comes along. Another time was Brokeback Mountain. It was up against Crash, a movie about racism. People have said over a decade later that they would have picked Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture, but voters went with the "safer choice." It's worth noting that Ang Lee won Best Director, which was a huge milestone too.

This is the year Oscar dies. When I was little I used to think that the films that get nominated for Oscars are the best movies of that year, later when I got to know how award system works, I was so disappointed that its mainly a popularity contest where people campaign like elections to get awards, and hence the good but little known films by non-influential people will obviously be overlooked. All these thousands of Academy members don't even watch all the films, and vote for the movies that are trending or made by their friends. This is not meritocracy. Maybe the jury system of having around 20 eminent film personalities who watch the films together and then vote for awards is better, like at Cannes.

During the Hollywood Studio era, stars were trained to sing and dance. The dance scenes in La La Land couldn’t hold a candle to the most average dance scenes in old Hollywood musicals.

Emilia Perez is the epitome of everything that is wrong with Colonial countries. A French director who said that Spanish is a language spoken only in poor countries (he forgets that the French colonies are quite poor too), didn't research the topic therefore perpetuating Mexican stereotypes. Using Google Translator for the script. Employing a toxic person who is racist and clasist as the main character, and the worst thing of all, trivialising drugs and cartel violence. No idea whatsoever, about the daily struggles that loved ones all over Mexico, Central and South America have to go through to find their missing relatives. This movie is not progressive at all.

One of the biggest snubs in Oscar history has to be Best Original Song for "See You Again" from FURIOUS 7, but instead, FIFTY SHADES OF GRAY gets nominated for "Earned It." I believe it was ineligible because although the film popularised the brilliant Seal song, the song wasn't written directly for the film. In fact, Joel Schumacher heard it when it was first released in 1994 and decided to put it in the 1995 film, prompting the song's rerelease and eventual success in the charts.

13:17 "Batman Forever" even scored 3 Academy Award nominations. Besides Best Cinematography, it was also nominated for Best Sound, which it lost to Apollo 13, the same category in which "Waterworld" was also nominated, and Best Sound Editing, which in turn "Batman Forever" lost to "Braveheart".

Naturally when WatchMojo does a list like this, it's pretty much all movies from the last 20 years. I was shocked we went as far back as the 80's a couple of times! Here are a few other movies with Oscar nominations that are both older than anything presented here and not well-regarded critically: Only When I Laugh (1981), Heartbeeps (1981), The Blue Lagoon (1980), The Formula (1980), Meteor (1979), The Swarm (1978), Thank God It's Friday (1978), The Slipper and the Rose (1977), Airport '77 (1977), The Hindenburg (1975), and The Day of the Dolphin (1973). And that's not even going back before the 70's!

The Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences has about 10,000. Therefore 10,000 people are voting to tell about 10 million people watching the Oscars what are "the best." 1. The event is mainly a biased popularity contest. There is always at least one film that feels like an "insider entertainment industry" film where the Academy is basically saying to everyone: "We are the film industry and we are the only people who understand this film." 2. Almost every year there is a "we made a mistake so we will give you an award this year." That means that someone who did the best performance looses out. 3. Just watch the films you want to and enjoy them regardless of any or no accolades. The Academy might open up an option to watch something you would not have otherwise. Otherwise you choose what you think are the best of the best.

You'll notice that the only criticism given for why Waterworld qualifies as one of the "worst movies" to receive an Oscar nomination is that it was a "flop". Further, if you actually look into it, the only reason it was ever considered a "flop" was because it went _massively_ overbudget, and becoming infamous for being so massively overbudget earned it the public reputation of "bad movie" before it was even released, despite the fact that the movie eventually made a profit. That's the only reason the film is included on this list at _all,_ much less ranking at #4. That's because Waterworld (even the theatrical cut, but _especially_ the Ulysses Cut) is a f*cking _awesome_ movie. Not only in its own right, but it might just be Dennis Hopper's all-time classic portrayal of an absolutely hilarious villain ("Maybe he doesn't respond to Chuck... call him Charles! Charles!"). Another thing: Alien 3 gets a _lot_ of sh!t it doesn't deserve. Granted, it gets a fair bit of sh!t it does deserve, but it's _far_ outweighed by sh!t it doesn't; this goes especially for the Director's Cut. And while we're at it, Eraser was a damn good movie. Maybe not a _great_ movie, but it doesn't belong on this list.

I remember when Leonard Maltin brought up a horrible movie that actually WON an Oscar, and he said it was possibly the worst film to ever receive an Academy Award of any kind. It was Thank God It's Friday, which won for best song (Last Dance, Donna Summer).
