@@justaboy343 I don't think that it's as much as the standards are low than being realistic... Imagine have to dance to a 200+ bpm song and sing simultaneously... I know that I haven't been taught how to control my breath and all the training they go through, but I literally can't walk and sing, otherwise I'll hit a wrong note... So now, imagine doing it on Master of Puppets (Metallica) and that is what you're getting yourself into! With that being said, I would like to say that I don't think that mediocrity should be worshipped in any way, shape or form. However, I try to provide an explanation as to how it's come to be acceptable to be a vocalist even if you don't have a lot of talent. With all that out of the way, I hope you have a great day!

Out of kpop companies SM was always ridiculed to only value "visuals" But SM trains and has the best vocalists in kpop. Even those who dont hold the title of "main vocal" have heavenly vocals. All of their artists are well-rounded.

That's true. Many people would right away think about "visuals" when it comes to SM which I found it pretty sad. To me, it has to be Vocalists. SM is the only agency who has recording process where their Vocalists actually sing and they say no with faking. That's also the reason why I stayed with SM artists no matter what. I can tell you that when people talk about SNSD members who can sing well, most often than not, people only mention Taeyeon or Jessica and sometimes about Seohyun & Tiffany but Sunny is really rarely mention…. Back then, boy groups were the craze and girl groups get ton of flak. Same with SNSD/SJ era. SNSD started with ton of flak but they managed to pull through and are now legends.

@@reveirg9 the problem was SM, they kept pushing them back and forth from Japan and Korea, just when they started gaining popularity in Korea they where sent to China and Japan, just when they started picking up steam in Japan they got sent back to Korea. They could have been the greatest vocal group around if SM kept them in Korea instead of trying to push them around Asia, that's what they learnt for SNSD, Shinee and FX, see those groups didn't debut in other countries till they had a solid hit in Korea. Snsd had Gee, genie oh and run devil run, shinee had replay and ring ding dong, FX had hot summer and danger all before they went to Japan, the grace had one more time ok? But then got pushed straight into the Japanese market with a Japanese version and the flopped and underperformed in Japan. SM fucked up the grace so badly tbh.

@@reveirg9 i agree. Actually My Everything brought them some attention in Korea, but before they could capitalize on this Stephanie had a back injury. They had to halt promotions because their main dancer was gone. I feel like they had every opportunity to promote again when she recovered (1. This was around 2010-2011 when girl groups were well in the mainstream and 2. They had the biggest idol company to support them). But this was at the time of their contract expiration and the girls just chose not to renew. Most people find it easy to blame SM but i think for once it isnt their fault. SM never disbands their groups and probably would have promoted them if they chose to renew... Though im not any of the girls, and im not SM, so I cant speak on whats right or wrong in their situation. All i can say is that I feel like they paved the way for SNSD and other ggs to break into the industry.

You know what this means? It means less than 10 female artists of SM are underdeveloped vocalist (but still a good singer). Which is insane, considering they have 31 female artists. And beside all 23 girls in this video, Amber and Giselle are probably also a developed vocalist as well. SM does not come to play when it is about vocal, this is why vocal is their biggest strength.

Karina is really underrated as a vocalist, in my opinion she brings something very new to the SM female vocal style. She has such a beautiful bold and dark texture and can do a lot of vocal feats within her range!

i see a lot of people describe her voice as dark but it’s not to me? bold yes but she’s extremely whiny (seems like a stylistic choice) and nasal which is the opposite of a dark, rich voice. a dark voice would be tiffany, hyoyeon and stephanie. arguably giselle has a darker tone than karina which makes sense as i’ve heard sang alto in choir. whilst she probably isn’t an alto nor mezzo soprano, she was probably heavier and darker than the other sopranos in the choir at the time.

@@ridgeromero2633 No no she isn't there yet on C5, its more like Bb4/B4 and she always had that its just that when she sustains Bb4/B4 it can often be tight and whiny bcoz of her known problems but still in the same performance she can do well on phrased notes in that range.

In order to pass as a lead vocalist in SM you must support at least Bb4. Now to be a main vocalist you need to support C5. The standard. Some main vocalists from other groups can't even support at all.

Basically when you can support up to Bb4 (your lows need to be just as solid), you'd likely land on a main vocalist in other companies, which is the level of where SM's lead vocals are, if you can support C5 (lows also need to be just as solid), that's already above average in most companies except SM, so that says alot about their standards and level
