The ingredient list is so true. I used to work as food technologist, in that role I would create food labels and ingredient list. The companies always had me “edit” the ingredient list to be more appealing to the target customers. So I’m pretty sure the do it in the beauty industry. Also I started washing my hair with some basic suave shampoo. Deep conditioning with silicone mix conditioner and my hair is at waist length. 4b hair.

My moisture is retained so much better than when I used a regular oil and since I shampoo with a sulfate free shampoo and restyle my wash and go every 3 to 4 days my hair is always manageable now because it never gets dry and crunchy and tangled. I have always been able to use silicones. I don’t get build up but I also don’t do that “only lather up the scalp” thing that so many curlies do. I wash once a week, but I actually WASH my hair. Then I “squish to condish” and then add oil and then cream so that I replace any lost moisture. I don’t have silicone build up.

Gina Lacey I switch it up but I’ll use aussie or shea moisture shampoo sometimes not your mothers, then I’ll condition same brands, then I’ll deep condition my favorites are the shea moisture Jamaican black or the Aussie 3 minute miracle with oil mixed in, leave it in for a hour with a cap on, then I’ll take a shower and do my wash n go, I’ll use the Cantu leave in conditioning cream, then the curl enhancing smoothie, then wetline gel. I usually end up washing my hair twice a week like every 5-6 days so the back half of the week i take out deep conditioner and do everything in the shower. Took me forever to get my regimen and finally be able to do a wash n go but once I started doing everything in the shower and started doing things for my porosity instead of just my curl type I finally got a routine and I’ve been natural for like 6 years 😂

I was on the curly girl method for 2.5 solid years. When I put silicone back into my routine, my fairy knots went down by A LOT. I was having to trim so much and so often when I was silicone free. My hair just seems to stay dry and tangled and it breaks and I was about to give up hope that I could fix it until I found your videos. I saw that you recommended things with dimethicone and I knew ppl say avoid silicones but I was at my wits end and you seem to know what you’re talking about so I went and bought what you suggested. I’m so grateful to report that I’ve had A LOT less tangles and breaking since I stopped avoiding silicones. Thank you for busting the myths. It’s very needed!!!!

THANK YOU and God richly bless you! Subcribed! I've mentioned in another post truths about silicones. Phenyl Trimethicone may be the one that is a little heavy and may leave residue for some people. I find that people are layering one product after another on their hair and it's making it dull, etc. I wash my hair, condition in the shower, rinse, leave my hair wet as possible, spray more water/aloe mix if needed, apply conditioner and then silicones on top. The end. I may experiment here and the (I'm a product junkie too!). I "flow" with whatever my hair wants to do but i am very low maintenance. Natural hair to me is extremely time consuming. WashnGos are too for me. Hth

But even then, I wasn't certain whether or not _everything_ was washed off that needed to come off, so I still use shampoo.

The water only method is exactly that...water only. You’re not supposed to keep putting oils/conditioners or whatever on your hair...just water. If someone does that, I don’t see why they’d need a surfactant. It’s not something I’d do but to each their own. Great vid💜👍🏾

T.K. Sweeney there is dust and dirt in the air which deposits on the hair. Grease from cooking gets aerosolized and deposits on the hair. Plus our scalp secretes oil. You need a surfactant to remove this gunk.

I used to diy all my hair products because I was just exhausted of reading labels and not knowing what was gonna work and what might damage my hair. Then I started trying lots of different products and honestly not caring too much about what is it. Now I can't tell you if something has silicone or not. If it adds moisture and gives me slip. I use it. If not, I don't. I think it's best not to follow the "rules" so much and just do what you feel your hair likes

Surfactants are chemical compounds that decrease the surface tension or interfacial tension between two liquids, a liquid and a gas, or a liquid and a solid. Surfactants may function as emulsifiers, wetting agents, detergents, foaming agents, or dispersants. wetting agent meaning just water can help depending on the water

I agree with you about silicones, but if we are talking about environment damage - I think we should reduce the amount of silicones that we put on your hair. I think the thing most people don't understand about the water-only method is that there are two ways to clean things, via mechanical action or chemical. The water only method uses mechanical cleansing via brushing and preening. Calling it a lie is a bit much. I don't think I particularly biased toward the method either just well informed. I tried the method it worked, it took too way too much effort for me so I went back to shampoo and conditioner.

I agree with this woman right here. I do co-wash, but I only do that in between wash days. I have to use a shampoo to get the product buildup and excess oils off of my hair. I tried co-washing as a replacement for shampoo before and I had SO MUCH product buildup that I had to wash my hair in sections about 4 or 5 times before I was able to get everything out. It was a nightmare. Co-wash if fine between washes, but that’s it.

Great video! Personally, I don’t use silicones or oils in my hair. Those ingredients cause my hair to become dehydrated and coated over time. Moisture for me comes from clean hair and a clean scalp, a good deep conditioner, and a moisturizing hair cream. Also, detangling my hair thoroughly with a wooden comb once a week to get all the shed hair out aids significantly in moisture. The natural hair community believes in finger detangling. That is detrimental for my hair.

Minimal Assembly Yes, pure oils. I don’t use pure oils. I just use actual hair products because the ingredients are naturally formulated for hair. I used to think that using raw oils on my hair “sealed” in moisture. That just caused my hair to become dehydrated over time. And while detangling tools are used more and more in the natural community, finger detangling has been touted as the best way to detangle natural hair. Especially by naturals who follow the Curly Girl Method. I did that for the first three years of being natural and I constantly battled single strand knots and tangles.

My hair dries out fast I love how it looks remoisterized every 2-3 days!

I’m sure you’re right but whatever I was using before, I wasn’t retaining length. No sulfates, no parabens, no silicones, yes length retention.

Since 2017 I have typically washed my hair with a co-wash cleanser (not conditioner, but conditioning cleanser) and rarely use shampoo. My hair, and especially my scalp, are left feeling clean and refreshed. Don’t co-wash products contain surfactants? By the way, I started a hair growth/health journey in the summer of 2016 when I was below shoulder length. I reached tailbone length by 2019. I plan to keep my hair at this length and work on increasing fullness at the ends by decreasing manipulation. Thankfully, I have been working from home since March 2020 and no longer have to style my hair every day. 😊

Will a sulfate-free shampoo remove silicone?

Curly Chemistry yeah, my understanding was silicones should be avoided *if* you’re going sulfate free, and that the general silicone aversion that’s happened missed that point.

From what I know its not that silicone is impossible to remove it's that you have to use harsh damaging cleansers. Where as if your using water solliable products you don't have to use harsh cleansers often

Hello! Does it make any sense to use a shampoo with silicones? How can you wash silicones off with silicones?

Shondria Baynard I like silicones in stylers but I avoid them in shampoos and containers.

Great question! It is pointless to have a silicone in a shampoo, because they will wash right off.

One outright lie is you NEED billions upon billions of products to be considered "natural". Honeychild.no.those products have toxic chemicals. In no possible universe should your hair routine take months to do each step. Thats way too much.same with skincare, fragrance, makeup.

The only way I can wash silicones out is with clay. My sulfate shampoo could not remove it all. I generally have noticed a big difference in my hair health and it's ability to retain moisture since going cone free. But I totally agree about needing sulfate shampoo, my hair needs that cleansing silicones or not

Yes, it's also paired with another cleansing surfactant for extra cleansing properties, but I've used shampoos with just coco-betain and they work just fine. Quick fact! Coco-betain also has conditioning properties for the hair as well because it has a positive charge! I can talk about this in another video as well! :-)

I read a chef's comments, that she traveled the world and majority of the any type of olive oil is in the country is fake - she stated it is too expensive and the companies resort to less quality products. In saying that I always make sure anything I use is researched to my own resolutions - with what works or not Thanks for the infor Queen !
