Then it's not a true passion of yours. If it is, fuck the risk and get the bike. You don't want to grow old and think to yourself, "Damn I really wish I rode that motorcycle when I was younger" as you're sitting in your nursing home watching the world ride by. As for your wife, if she truly loved you, and you truly were responsible with your decision, then she wouldn't control your actions and hinder you from living out your dreams.

I know you're joking and all but I have actually heard that as a legit reason why not to get a bike or a sports car or something and I cannot understand it at all. If the title is in your name, your spouse can't sell it without breaking the law big time. "Honey did you move by bike?" "I sold it earlier today because you don't need to be riding that death trap" "Hello police, I need to report a stolen motorcycle"
@RustyFiReWorKs8 жыл бұрын
As a more experienced rider, my only complaint is the division in the biker community. If it isn't the ego, it's age. If it isn't age, it's the type of bike you're riding. If it's not the type of bike, age, or ego, it's race. If it isn't all of those it's MC's hating other MC's. I mean come on guys we all ride, we all started somewhere, and at the end of the day, we're all *riders*. We do what we love no matter what the risk or the influence of society. We need to stop letting barriers ruin the brotherhood.

I get what you are saying but I don't think about it much. I never care what anyone thinks about me, so that helps. I have a bmw s1000rr and a Harley vrod and some people wave and some don't. Just the way it is. Never had anyone come up to me and say I'm not riding a real bike. I mainly ride solo, so I don't just get caught up in all that community stuff. I think it's really childish behavior that I'm not a part of. I ride for me. I will until I die. I don't mind riding with other riders, but I just don't do it often.
@RustyFiReWorKs8 жыл бұрын
Daniel Williams I feel you man and I'm the exact same way I mainly ride solo and for myself. When you ride with others, especially people you don't know well, you don't get to choose the pace or you have to worry about others getting near or pleasing their riding style. I don't really care what people think in terms of giving me respect while riding but it's just annoying to me how people are is what it comes down to.

Lol, I'm a female. I always wanted a Ninja, but when it came down to first vehicle my parents said "no way". I got an '03 Mustang, so still really cool, nothing to complain about, and honestly having a car really helped me with space and transportation. I kind of put my hopes and dreams for a motorcycle on the backburner for a while. Actually just in the past few months I've been watching more motorcycle related things and getting back into it.And it ended up being my fiancé's idea to do ADV/Dual Sport, and go on a tour before we get married. It still seemed kind of like a pipe dream, but I kept thinking about it, researching, watching, etc. It seemed possible, sure. I took my MSF course and am planning to get my M endorsement on my 21st birthday next month (so I can automatically switch over to the adult license). It's going to take me a while to save up enough to get a good used bike, but I'm looking at a DRZ400s so I can keep up on these Texas highways!

Both of us at the same time yelled "NO! IT'S ARRRR ARRR!!!!" in our best CycleCruza voices. Then we laughed about it. Figured you'd get a kick out of that. You have trained us well. :)

I think one thing that is a major factor in him having fun on a 250 is the fact that he has experienced the faster bikes. people that move up and go back down ALWAYS have fun on the small bike. people that start small and slowly move up get tired of their slower bikes and just dream about upgrading.

What makes the dual sport fun is being able to hit dirt and street, best of both worlds where off-road is much more fun than riding pavement.

Good vid cyclecruza. One suggestion for the short newbs..... When you stop make sure your in first gear. Lean with your left foot, into the crest of the road. Some roads in the country have a greater crest. If your not paying attention you may go down because the road will be an inch or two lower than expected. It's also easier to start up a hill with your right foot on the brake. A friendly tip from a country boy.

customize the ergonomics. You can move the bars and pegs and / or get new ones. Or just deal with it; maybe your out of shape or not riding with good form. For sportbikes you need to grip the tank with your legs, it takes a while to get used to that.

There's a reason why Honda Groms are getting so popular. You can full throttle it (well, you kinda have to, so you can keep up with traffic) all day and It would all be under the speed limit. Also, even though it's a 125, you can catch up to 600's on mountain roads if you know what you're doing.

As for starting on a Supersport, CycleCruza nailed it. If you have to ask then don't do it. I started on an r3 320cc, and its freakin blast to ride, I can keep up with my SS riding buddies all day (unless they decide to go open throttle on highway). And I get way more complements on my r3 than my buddies do with their older supersports. The little 300's tear up the backroads, and while they may top out 6th gear at only 115, I have no complaints about highway riding at 80mph for over an hour straight. Truth is you'll probably drop the bigger bike at low speed in a parking lot at low speed.

You should drop your left leg at a stop light, not the right leg. The left allows you to still use the rear brake with the right foot so you can do things with your hands when stopped. Make sure to leave the bike in first so you can make a quick getaway if you see someone bearing down on you.
@CycleCruza8 жыл бұрын
Imo, the right leg is better because it allows to keep you foot on the shifter, especially if you are at a long traffic light and you want to put the bike in neutral to keep your clutch hand from fatigue.
@ridemotoeveryday8 жыл бұрын
I like to keep my left foot on the peg to shift as well. Right foot down.
@nitemareman18 жыл бұрын
I only take my bike out of gear when there are several cars behind me that have all stopped safely, and the light is particularly long. So I rarely take it out of gear. You need to be ready to get the hell out of the way. I don't really see a need to keep your clutch hand from feeling fatigue, since you're only at a light for a few minutes usually, and the safest thing is to keep the bike in gear. Left leg down is what the author of Proficient Motorcycling recommends, and that guy is a bike guru for sure.
@nitemareman18 жыл бұрын
Cole Cooper That's the great thing about riding- you're free to do it (and screw it up) however you please, but the general consensus from bike experts is that if you're a shorter rider you should drop to first before stopping, and keep the left leg down so you can operate the brake. You've never been at a light with an uphill slant? Keeping the left foot down allows you to brake with the right and add throttle easily with the right hand, preventing you from rolling backwards.
@nitemareman18 жыл бұрын
Cole Cooper So you say I tell people how to ride, then in the same sentence you admit I say that you can ride how you want. What I DID, was tell people what the experts say about which leg to put down. What you are doing is just being a finger waving contrarian troll. CC said that you should put your right leg down and I simply said I think it should be left. I don't think he needs you to come to his defense, and I don't remember him asking you to. You're the worst kind of person. You wouldn't say a THING to me IRL. We are talking about riding here and it's the free exchange of ideas. We don't need convo trolls like you telling us what we can and can't say. On top of all this, the big forehead slapper here is that YOU AGREE WITH ME. You admit that you believe the way I do it is the right way. Yet you're unable to see how a convo and exchange of ideas can benefit everyone because they can see all the reasons for doing it each way then decide for themselves. I never told anyone how to ride, dude. You're a joke.
@CZ350tuner8 жыл бұрын
Been riding since 1980 and never regretted it. Had quite a few biker friends dies over the years but not one to anything motorcycle related like a bike - car collision. Two dropped dead suddenly with brain aneurisms (one aged 30 and the other 40's), one had his heart stop whilst sleeping at age 40, one died in the cab of his tipper truck when the brakes failed on a steep hill. No use sitting in that old folks home aged 80 plus wishing that you'd learnt to ride motorcycles (and other things) back when you were able too. Only one go at life so don't let others spoil it by projecting their own personal fears and predudices on ya.
@p51mustang248 жыл бұрын
Cyclecruza: at a stop sign drop your LEFT leg, not your right. Make a habit of it because on hills you will naturally be on the rear brake. (obvious exception being if you popped into neutral for the light / extended stop) I believe this is what the MSF guys teach too.

I'm 69 and have owned 18 motorcycles since 1964 and have never had a bike that I could put both feet flat at a stop. My current bike has a 32" seat height and I have a 30" inseam and it's no problem. You just have to develop a little balance and coordination. This low seat fetish today is ridiculous. Remember, ultra low seats are what gave us the "feet-forward" riding position on so many modern bikes, which transforms the rider into a helpless passenger when you hit a bump or pothole and can't put your weight on the pegs. Of course, some people are extremely short and really need a low seat, but that's a small percentage of riders.

I agree with you, but as a rider who is hardly 5'1" it's not as simple as just putting my foot down. My girlfriend has a Ducati M900, and we've tested this out, in order for me to get one foot on the ground I have to shift my whole butt out of the seat. Here's another counter-argument to the "motorcycles will kill you" argument. On a bike there's a circle of both being forced to pay way more attention for your safety, along with having way more awareness of what's going on around you. So, you develop excellent habits on the road that also applies to driving cars. Thus you're a better driver and less likely to have an accident in the first place no matter what you're in or on. Plus you learn all kinds of things to pay attention TO. Once you have good motorcycle riding experience you learn to look for things like what other drivers are doing with their head and hands, and countless other things. In short by being a rider you both gain skills which apply to driving cars that you just won't get simply by driving cars, plus reinforcing habits which likewise just aren't reinforced by just driving cars alone.

My parents thought that the idea of getting a motorcycle as my first vehicle, let alone a bike in general was like sending me through a field of land mines, but shit man, this bike gave me a set of wings to fly over that shit field. If you're in a similar situation, where your parents/whoever says no, push them past that no, and turn that no into a yes. Because I can guarantee you that it'll be worth it.

Back then before I got my 2016 DRZ400 Soopar Motarrrd, I had a hard time believing that until I decided to listen to these senior riders anyway, and took a leap of faith while depending on me shaving my seat down 1" and the suspension break-in. In the end, it worked, and that good rider advice out there could not have been anymore true. In a nutshell, yes you do need only ONE foot to stand your bike in stops, believe it or not. 2.) I agree 100% unless you can't afford to spend money starting low and moving up. If you're in that situation, you better have utmost understanding that respect for both your limit vs. your bike's power are above EVERYTHING else. You never know the survival ratio between those who start on +600cc sport bikes and survived, and those who died trying. Dead people tell no tales. 3.) Agree 100% on that. It's your Life, your Bike, and your Ride. Let no one dictate your life with a motorcycle, and be safe. Cheers.

I agree with you about the whole "anti depressant" thing. that's the same way have always fealt about BMX. unfortunately, 15 years ago, my mom still preferred to poison me against my will, even if it was only pedals.

I'm 5'6" in a good day and my last bike was a DRZ 400S .... While I managed it no problem and seat height isn't the most important being able to flat foot sure helps give new riders that extra bit of confidence . Especially if they have 0 motorcycle experience at all . My new FZ-09 I can flat foot no problem and I gotta say It's really freaking nice to be able to do

It's not that we are bitching about seat height, it's because there is actually value in a lower seat height. I've done wheelies and lost my side to side balance and was able to put my foot down to avoid crashing many times.

Seat height is a valid point though... Personally, I hate riding bikes that are too tall for me, it kills my confidence at slow speed. If I can't at least put my toes flat, I won't feel comfortable riding it. Seat height can also go the other way too, being too short can cramp you up and make you uncomfortable.
@Osprey19948 жыл бұрын
I never heard anyone at the MSF course complain about seat height and I didn't even think about seat height but I'm 6'1 so... That is a short rider complaint and only a short rider complaint.

Suzuki boulevard is a great "starter" bike if someone is looking at cruisers. 800cc and about 575lbs. Im 5'11" , 160lbs - seat is nice and low and it has enough power to get up and go but not too much where i dont feel comfortable. I recommend checking it out for anyone looking for a cruiser first bike 👍🏻 Ride safe 🤘🏻

I've ridden dirt bikes my whole life, so when I wanted to get a road bike I knew I dual sport would be perfect. I bought a brand new wr250r last month and honestly couldn't be happier. People thought a 250 would be too small but once you ride it you'll realize it's plenty fast for the roads. Sure you can't do 140 on it but getting up to the speed limit is not hard on it. I think it's a great beginner bike and have no plans on selling it
@CycleCruza8 жыл бұрын
Nice! That's why I tell people a dual sport is the best beginner bike because it's likely you'll keep it even if you get fast street bike. Imo, I have more fun on my dual sport than I ever had on a street-only bike. It's nice to be able to go anywhere anytime and no felony speeding but still have a lot of fun. Best of luck!

For all the teenagers/husbands/wives/bfs/gfs keep this in mind. If you listen to cyclecruza make sure he has a place for you to crash in his house when you get kicked out of the crib for buying a motorcycle without consulting your parents or significant other first. Here's a little better advice. If you're a teenager either wait till you're old enough to live on your own or 18, keep asking until they give in, or see if you can work out a fair compromise but be sure to hold up your end of the bargain in order to get what you want. If you're married or have a partner, use the same concept with regards to meeting your partner halfway. Most relationships the money is shared so keep in mind you're not only spending your money but theirs as well. If children are involved you have to absolutely think of them before your own WANTS. If you make all the money or your own money then buy one. Just promise to never squid and to be "reasonably responsible" on your bike (whatever that means to you). If a person leaves you because you buy a motorcycle or if you're willing to arbitrarily just buy a bike despite your partners concerns and objections then you two shouldn't be together in the first place. Just remember a bike won't keep you warm at night and you can't have sex with it either (not in the U.S. at least lol)

Im the guy that came up to you on Friday night downtown, I bought a 500 as my first bike for not only to learn on but also to have for when I get used to it so I'm not bored with it, I can keep up with friends who ride 600+ till about 80-90 mph and I rarely do that so +CycleCruza

Hey! That's a cool bike you have. Really, on the street that's all the power you need anyways. It all depends on what a new rider feels comfortable with, not everybody has the same natural skills starting off.

When I was 5-years old I'd already spent a year riding on the motorcycle with my dad sitting behind me operating the shifter & rear brakes while I sat on the rear part of the gas tank aso I could steer and operat the throttle, clutch & front brakes because I was way too small to reach the foot pegs & controls with my feet. But I was ready to solo and my mom refused to let me, telling me that when my feet can touch the foot pegs I can ride by myself. So the next summer I had barely grown much bigger, but discovered that I could touch the left pedal with my foot if I hung off the seat by my right leg at the knee. So I showed my parents, and my mom scoffed but my dad reminded her that she'd said that when I could touch the pedals I could ride solo... so she gave in (this was 1972 in Alaska, so boys grew into men a little quicker). I had to learn how to ride by holding the bike up and running with it, then jumping up on it like a cowboy doing trick riding to get up into the seat, then after my rides, I'd have to get both feet on the left peg as I slowed to a stop so I could hop off and keep the bike upright when it stopped. Been riding for 44-years now. RIDE, you fools! RIDE!!! RIDE like your life depends on it!!! :-)

Gotta thank my dad for teaching me how to ride, and for sticking up for me when my mom wanted me to wait. That bike was literally as big to me as a horse is to an adult, but it was a machine of mystery, and time travel, and escape, that I will never be without in my life until I'm no longer able to ride, or dead. :-)

WARNING: DO NOT DROP YOUR RIGHT LEG. Drop your left leg and keep your right foot on the rear brake to avoid any movement of the motorcycle while stationary.
@CycleCruza8 жыл бұрын
That's what the front brake is for. Never drop your left leg as a kickstand unless you want to lose it. lol When you pull over o the right shoulder of a road the last thing you want to do is lean left towards traffic flying by. Also, it's imperative to be on the shifter in case you need to haul butt quickly, often times people will drop to neutral at long stop lights in heavy traffic to reduce clutch hand fatigue.
@EnigmaGameMaster8 жыл бұрын
CycleCruza I guess if you see it like that, yeah, but I still prefer to rest my foot on the brake pedal instead of having to hold the front brake lever. It also encourages me to go further away from the road than I would if I dropped my right foot on the ground. I'm also saying that because that's what I've been told by the motorcycle classes and all the books I read about motorcycling safety. Personally I never put the bike on neutral and I just hold the clutch, so having to haul ass quickly isn't an issue since I'm already shifted into 1st gear.

The first time I got onto my first motorcycle it was a pain, full leg cramps. Two days later seat height did not even matter. All you got to do is reach over the bike hold the front brake down then use the foot peg to throw your right leg over the bike and get on the other foot peg. Then sit down, then reverse to get off. P.S. It gets sketchy on dirt bikes/ supermotos, but just believe in yourself. lol

Something overlooked about the argument over seat height: How wide is the bike at the seat? My FJR1300 has a seat height of 32.5" or 33.5" and weighs close to 700 lbs., and the bike is really wide. The WR250 is 38" at the seat and weighs about 250 lbs. and it is really narrow. Plus, I figure you will lose at least 2" - 3" of that when the rider climbs on.

Seat height is important and should be considered for off road riding. Enduro, technical, and dualsport riding calls for the ability to at least get your toes down. The motorcross argument is irrelevant, they are racing and you dont stop or ride through technical stuff to warrent putting a foot down.

you put yourself into 1st gear then you drop your *left* leg, that way your right foot can stay on the rear brake, try stopping on a hill and turning smoothly without dragging the rear brake, its much less safe. always drag the rear to help do tight parking lot style maneuvers
