As a Native Hawaiian, my best advice to tourist would be just because you see locals doing something, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to do it too. BUT if you don’t see any locals doing something, it’s in your best interest to follow our example. Hālona Blowhole is along the strongest current in all of Hawaii, the Kaʻiwi Channel, and is next to Sandy’s Beach, known for having the most broken neck and back injuries in the nation! You will see many of us locals (born and raised in these waters) surfing/bodysurfing at Sandy’s, but unless you have experience, do NOT go in! However, you will not catch locals near the blowhole period! For what reason anyway? That in itself should say something. But if you decide to break past the barriers of places you shouldn’t be and end up hurt or worse, do NOT come here and try to shutdown these places because YOU fucked up as a VISITOR 💯. Next time come correct with respect for the places you’re visiting or no come at all.

As soon as you mentioned him jumping the seaworld fence, I knew exactly who this guy was 😪 everyone involved here was a victim. Poor Daniel and poor Tilly. Also, Tilikum wasn't punished even though that was the second of three people he would kill for the same reason SeaWorld kept him trapped and tortured in the first place - he was worth too much to "punish". He ended up dying in a tiny solitary confinement tank and SeaWorld barely suffered. Garbage human beings own that company.

I can understand Daniel’s parents wanting a metal grid for the blowhole . However , it wasn’t an accident , Daniel purposely climbed over and put himself over the Blowhole . He wasn’t satisfied in feeling the pressure hitting him in the chest once (which was odd) but he did it again . Maybe he wanted to impress the girls . I agree with the locals he didn’t respect nature . He also didn’t respect and appreciate his life . It’s a reckless way to die . RIP Daniel 🙏🌺❤️🌸.

You're damn right they did not "punish" Tilikum for Daniel's death. They knew who was at fault. My heart breaks for Tilikum's tragic life. Daniel's death was, of course, Daniel's fault for going in there, but the larger picture is that it was just the fault of people. The blame for all of the deaths related to Tilikum belongs to human beings. One hundred percent. You do not take a free-ranging apex predator who roams the oceans, rip them away from their tight-knit families as they did to Tilikum when he was just two, make him live in a bathtub, force him to perform tricks only to entertain people, and then wonder what went wrong. The captive horror that they thrust upon Tilikum for 34 years completely devastated his emotional and physical health. You could not possibly be crueler to an orca than by doing exactly what they did to Tilikum.

The are very loyal to their packs (pods?) and each group has a unique dialect meaning that they can often not understand orcas from other pods. Tillikum was stolen from his family as a baby and then put with two older females that used to drag their teeth on him at night when they were locked in a tiny little box causing big bleeding wounds. What is done to them is torture, pure torture. They are very intelligent and they are very emotional creatures. They live in family units and they stay with their family for their entire lives. They never leave their mothers, and in captivity they take babies from their mothers. Literally babies. Not young children but babies. Also Tillikum removed his gentalia. They usually do in these kinds of attacks. They are also known for pulling victims down and holding them there until they almost drowns and only then taking them up for air and then repeatedly doing that over and over. Orcas have echolocation just like dolphins, they technically are a kind of dolphin, anyway, point is that that means that they are well aware that we need to breath air and can literally see our lungs with the help of their echolocation. Aka: They do it on purpose, well captive orcas that is. Wild orcas don’t bother humans, but they also haven’t been tortured by humans for their entire lives so probably why captive ones behave so differently. Oh and Seaworld like to claim that they take such good care of their orcas that their orcas has a life expectancy far beyond what they have in the wild. Orcas in captivity live for 25-30 years at the most. In the wild males live for 60-80 years and females live for 80-100 years commonly. So yeah... great job there seaworld...

Wjth the zoo story, I immediately recognized it was that story I read in a Darwin Awards book. Also I felt sad, as I knew about Tilikum from watching a documentary called Blackfish. He was a big orca with a droopy fin at the top of the orca's back.(it should be straight standing up, one theory was that it was because he had to swim in circles in a small pool) He passed several years ago. I recommend that film to anyone, regardless of interest in animals. It makes us look back at ourselves, and if the zoo 'shows' are something we should enjoy. It's explained that Tilikum's unpredictable nature was like a human's mental health going down when in captivity, forced to perform against their will. Orcas are highly intelligent beings, and mental health is a thing for them too. It would be stranger to NOT go violent and unpredictable, after what Tilikum went through. I hope he found peace at the end.
@warrior--poet54182 жыл бұрын
very straight, on that one - these killer whales (orca) are not the 'fish' to mess around with, their humanlike mindset and clan familiars are so profound, they're liable to become rogue (somewhat like elephants do); these times hold creatures in bars & glass, away from their kin & in the name of progress (industrialization & commerce), or other popular excused lines.. if we, instead, could be truly adventurous, there would no zoos & exotic preserves, have been - maybe, there would be no poachers, but, those issues are meticulous, compared to the advent of taking wildlands to the city; studying the beast is best left as 'field work'.. there, where these exotic and endangered creatures once thrived, it has great odds to have still held that title, but for the incursions in past centuries by humans, for the intent of (as said, above), which i have observed, since my youth... in saying : "the lord's creations, belong rightly, where you found them.!!" ~WarriorPoet~

Maybe this makes me psychopathic but I’ve never heard a more heartwarming but simultaneously tragic story than the one about Tillicum and Daniel. From the whale’s perspective, it seems like she was lonely and just totally loved her “toy.” Yet it’s heartbreaking that Daniel’s naïveté, ignorance of the power of nature, and desire to be around the thing he loved most got in the way of understanding and accepting the deadly reality.
@krishanubanerjee69552 жыл бұрын
Calling Daniel naive is nice of you. I'd say he was an idiot whose IQ was driven further down by copious amounts of pot. Who TF tries to go near a killer whale unless the whale has known him for a VERY long time? And even then, he'd have to be extremely cautious!
@nanifa60822 жыл бұрын
Nothing about naivete over here, Daniel's entire way of life stunk of self-centeredness. He wasn't stupid nor mentally impaired and unable to process "the power of nature". No, he constantly broke laws and rules that didn't suit him. And it wasn't a defiant or rebellious streak either, as he wasn't a delinquent nor a bad person. Daniel just put his immediate wants over others and common sense.

Tilikum was a male orca, actually! He already had a history of aggression towards humans; before going to SeaWorld, he had drowned a teenaged trainer at another water wildlife park. After Daniel, he then went on to drown and brutalize the body of his trainer, Dawn Brancheau. I think it was less so that he saw Daniel as a toy. In captivity, Tilikum was in such a confined space, unable to play out his natural hunting instincts, and often kept in isolation because the other orcas would hurt him. There's evidence he cared about Dawn and much as she cared for him, but under those conditions, it's no wonder Tilikum continued to lash out time after time. They are intelligent, social creatures that are apex predators in the wild, and captivity literally rips away their ability to do anything that is in their nature. He should have been released back into the wild after the first trainer he killed, and then Daniel and Dawn's deaths wouldn't have happened.
