I grew up right on the lake in Beverly Shores long before it was a national park. The erosion in that area has really gotten out of hand lately.

Have you seen a big change since it became a national park?

@@JourneytoAllNationalParks, not especially. Before getting the national park status, it was still the national lakeshore, so it’s always been common to see rangers around. The thing I notice the most is the obvious budget increase. The lake hasn’t been this high since 1985. I remember being a little kid filling sandbags to try to prevent the road falling in. This time the national guard took care of it pretty quickly. Organizations such as save the dunes and friends of the dunes were on their last legs, and with the Long Beach bizzillionaires trying to claim the beach directly in front of their houses as private. It really couldn’t have come at a better time.

The warm water discharge was always fun and extremely dangerous to crawl through a hole cut out of a rusted chain link fence, then jump off of huge I beams. The last time I did it, I jumped and hit something (fish, debris, dead body) when I landed in the water. I’ve never even considered going back there after that lol
