the moment you hear these beats you immediately hear the rest of the song in your head, that's why Danny is so special. he has truly unique beats for every song, they can be very complicated beats but still they always complete the song so perfectly. he's such a telented composer P.S. Danny said in an interview that he's playing a 8th note ostinato for eulogy bridge part this version sounds so sick tho 🤟. the original is a little bit easier to get down surprisingly

This is a great video however there are a couple minor mistakes that I found which I would like to correct quickly. Around 2:00 you refer to a closed hi-hat note as a rest. This is not true, a rest is the absence of sound. The click sound of the hi-hats closing would still be considered a note. The second issue I would like to address is the time signature for Schism. 6/4 does work.... however using 5/8 and 7/8 alternating is much nicer to read. When the song is written in the alternating time signatures it has the ending triplet on the hi-hat fall on beats 5 and 7.

Yo! I think its 16th note paradiddles on 2 different drums in 3/4. the snare is on 3, so you need to change which hand you're hitting the snare with each time you hit the snare. Apart from that, he starts adding drums that he is doing the paraddidles on, but mainly its those two main drums which kinda sounds like really high toms or some tribal percussion things. but basically practice paradiddles on the two toms in front of you while hitting the snare with rlrr lrll Rlrr lrll rlrr Lrll - Like that. Then add the kick pattern in.

Hey great drumming. Danny Carey is my favorite drummer and tool Is my favorite band. Can you please play the beat on "Parabola" at 2:47 seconds. It's one of my favorites. Thank you.

It only took me the better part of 20 years out of 32 to finally figure out the beat that’s played in the verse of Undertow. It never occurred to me until very recently that I could have been watching videos on KZbin and gotten a much quicker understanding of quite a few things with playing the drums. Better late than never, I guess?

I believe schism actually alternates between 5/8 and 7/8 (1 2 1 2 3 1 2 1 2 1 2 3). it doesn’t really matter but that’s what I’ve heard and to me it feels better to count that way.

I found this interesting, Schism: I was able to play this by listening to it but, with your explanation, it confused the hell out of me lol. But I also leaned drums on my own by listening to the music and playing it. A.D.D. is a weird monster lol.

nice job! here comes a little bit of smart-arse...: In the explanation of beat 2 (Schism) I would like to offer a correction: at beat 3 and 6 and I would not speak from 3 beats of a sextuplet but name it a sixteenth note triplet........

Isn't the Eulogy beat technically a polymeter and not a polyrhythm? Not trying to be a knowitall I'm genuinely curious because I've always thought of it as a polymeter and even used it as an example to distinguish between the two. I mean it's obvious that there are 2 different repeating patterns but that could be said about many things that aren't necessarily polyrhythm, right? Thanks in advance.Awesome lesson as always, Stephen! :) EDIT: I mean because the hi-hat is more of an accent and the repeating pattern only fills 3/4 of 1 beat of the measure of 4 that is the driving rhythm of the groove as a whole, and so isn't that a little "countably vague", if you will, to qualify as a separate rhythm in this circumstance?

So most of us are familiar why Maynard writes in odd timing, but what is Carry’s story? Did he accommodate with these out-of-this-world beats, or has he always been an odd beat player?
@davidgomersall7185
@davidgomersall7185 4 жыл бұрын
Most recent albums the band recorded the music then sent it to Maynard to record vocals over. Danny Carey cites Bill Bruford and King Crimson as one of his major influences so yeah, he has always been an odd time kinda guy 😁
