First of all thank you for the very thorough and easy to follow advice and instructions. I hear the passion in your voice and I appreciate you so much. I’ve been working on a very large scale multi media collage and had a 5ft poster printed , I used Golden soft gel to glue it down section by section. It was pretty challenging, I used a rubber scraper and a print roller and then learned I could use an iron with no water and put a sheet of paper between. Final results there were big bubbles in the paper , the paper is a medium to heavy weight poster. Anyway I’m going to use my creativity to make it all work. I also noticed even with smaller pieces of medium weight paper using the soft gel medium there was bubbling. I used all the same techniques to adhere it and some of the pigment pulled up and the paper I used as a protective while ironing stuck on the image I glued down. I still have hope in fixing this and using my creative skills. I’m sorry this is so long but I’m extremely passionate about this piece I’m working and would appreciate any advice you may have.❤️🙏🏽

I will admit that I do use Mod Podge. I don’t use it as an adhesive for art work. I use it to cover cardboard boxes. I had an art practice that I had built up for 25 years or more. I lost everything when I was evicted. I grabbed what I could. I took my journals. I’m still remembering things I no longer have. I’ve learned to be less precious or attached to anything. For about three years, I lived in my car. I started rebuilding my art practice immediately. One glue stick at a time, lol. I walked in and out of stores everyday. I noticed cardboard boxes and thought they would be useful as shelving. I learned that Mod Podge is very good for covering cardboard inside and out. It will make the cardboard rigid and it becomes more sturdy. It takes two coats, of Mod Podge, to create a sturdy cardboard container for storing items. I have not found it to be sticky. I agree, that dried, it might make pages stick together. I use a coating of Dorlands Wax Medium to seal work on paper. Sometimes I don’t. Any product that you put on paper will give certain qualities and results. Finding Golden Medium Medium was a game changer. Sometimes I use the Liquitex brand because it is a thinner consistency. The only way to learn about adhesives is to work with them. Yes, I live in an apartment now. I’m recreating an art practice once more. I, remember, in my last living space, that the first thing I began organizing, were my adhesives. They are an essential tool for art making. Thank you for this video, Robyn. It felt good to recognize most of the products. The Italian items are items that I have not acquired yet. And I have used PVA, for the first time, recently. I was very impressed with its properties.

Great list! I love a lot of your faves, too. In addition, I use Tim Holtz Collage Medium and Glossy Accents for a lot of things, as well as Beacon 3 in 1. The Collage Medium is great as a glue to hold just about anything to anything, but it also works as a decoupage style glue that doesn't stay/get sticky because it has resins in it that cure. Plus, it shrinks as it dries so if you accidentally use too much, it usually doesn't show. The Glossy Accents is my favorite for gluing glitter, plastics (sequins, acrylic pieces, etc...) and metals to things because it holds well and dries glossy, adding to the finish if you end up seeing any of it, plus it's great for adding gloss as an accent. Beacon 3 in 1 also holds pretty aggressively and dries super fast without buckling paper, though it is not good for anything plastic as it contains acetone. Thank you for sharing and have a great day! 😊

So timely that you explained glues! We just got back from our vacation in Italy where I was hoping to buy some Giotto glue sticks. No luck at all! I checked in several stores that sold glue but all they had was Pritt. I even stopped in a small art supply store and the clerk knew about Giotto paint but not their glue sticks. The closest I got to Giotto was in a a dollar store (Italian style) that carried everything under the sun. They had a huge selection of Giotto art supplies but no glue sticks. But there I did pick up a bottle of Giotto Collage that you showed today. Robyn, I think your enthusiasm for these glue sticks encouraged your Italian followers to buy them up! LOL! But thanks for all your info today - such a help to all of us.

I use wallpaper paste in my journals. It's very inexpensive and gets the job done. Buckeling of pages can be an issue, but the pages return mostly back into a flat state. In my art books I use PVA, watered down. It's quite surprising how much it can be watered down and still stick perfectly. I love glue sticks too, had a disappointing experience with Giotto, from Amazone DE, but I use Uhu and some local ones. Thanks Robyn, interesting as always

I use Uhu sticks, Elmer's Extra Strength glue sticks, Golden matte medium, and I just discovered Tacky Glue through my grocery store. I recently purchased PVA for Bookbinding. When I first started out with altered books I slathered glossy general use Mod Podge all over everywhere and I used unsealed inkjet prints--that did not go well. Thank you for all the great information!

My favorite paste is methyl cellulose. It is vegetable based and can be wet so the paper will contort. It is mixed at home, comes in a powder, with cold water so you can make it thicker. It doesn't need to be cooked, acid-free, archival and reversible. Many bookbinders use PVA and methyl cellulose mixed half and half. It bonds paper unless using clay-coated papers, then I use PVA. Never use rubber cement glue or YES paste. They are NOT acid free and will age to a brown color. Yes, YES paste is bad, even though the packaging says archival.

My glues are the most important supply in my studio. I use mostly Uhu and Art Glitter glue and a cheap tacky glue sometimes. I haven't yet got the pH neutral PVA although I intend to start using it. Plus I use gel medium for really chunky stuff like metal or plastic and on jewellery because I can't use solvent based glues like E6000. I'm with you on Mod Podge - I tried it and gave it away - horrible stuff! Thanks for sharing. 😀

Lately, I have been using Liquitex Matte Medium the most simply due to the type of collaging I am doing. I also have some Dick Blick and Elmer glue sticks but I don't really recommend either. They're okay and they work, but I don't always trust that what I'm gluing down will stay down.

I was using mod podge but I didn't like the brush cleaning part of it. I tried to apply it with a credit card but cannot get a nice thin layer of glue and the paper often buckles up so I abandoned. I prefer uhu glue stick now and glitter glue with the needle top. However I am concerned by the fact that the plastic stick is not recycled in my area. I saw someone use wallpaper glue for her collage and I intend to give it a try and see if it would have a lesser ecological footprint. Thanks Robyn.

I love it because it is SUPER smooth, wrinkle free, grips paper well but gives a few seconds of repositionability, dries invisible, stays stuck, smells good, and the case! It feels great in the hand, doesn’t roll, and you can stick the stick into the cap and it will stand up waiting for you on your desk.

QUESTION- would the pva in a fine tip bottle leave a bump or ridge if I used it under copy paper or cardstock? I use a lot of art glitter glue, tacky glue, matte mecium (liquitex), and gloss gel. I bought bearly art glue because it was winter. Bearly art is not my favorite. Art glitter glue is a favorite because I am a cardmaker. It holds quickly and doesn't usually add "bumps". I don't sell my art. It is a personal choice. I make A LOT of cards for church (about 300 to 500 a year), and for my own personal use. I have completed my first completely hand made journal and LOVE that process.

My fav is Golden Matte Medium- but it is too liquidy and hard to control for me. So- I use Golden Matte GEL medium. It’s terrific for fabrics as well and much easier to control. Also I get maximum stickage withTim Holtz collage medium, and Dina wake,y ultra thick gel medium. Also- I have had no luck with UHU. I like Elmer’s glue sticks that go on purple and dry clear.

I just recently discovered Tombow glue in a double ended tube. It has been a substitute for both Art Glitter glue and Fabritac because it adheres cloth and wax seals as well as paper, even the glossy paper. Have you used it? I just ordered a big refill for the tube. It seems to be a combination of water based and solvent based glues but I really don’t know. As for the glues you use, I also like the same ones, except the Golden but that’s only because I’m a hobbyist in journal making and not making archival art. Great to know your take on glues, thanks! 🦌💌❤️📚

@shelleynobleart2 жыл бұрын
Thought to chime in, unasked I realize. But this point is very important to me and think the info may help some. I understand acetone based adhesives, like Fabritac, ideally would require use of respirator to protect respiratory from fumes and gloves to protect from sensitizing skin from prolonged skin contact. I avoid use of anything other than non-toxic materials as much as possible.
