I’m not sure how, but you definitely seem to be right here… those were also my favorites. I’m not sure it has to do anything with price, or even workmanship at this point, but I personally really liked the way the less expensive models were set up.

Tama SLP. I was a bit surprised that this was my favourite, sounded best both with & without Moongel and had the most perceived depth of tone, despite only being 5.5”. I want one!

The Tama Star Phonic has a whole upper octave of harmonic transients. Not everyone wants to hear that type of snare voice but it cuts through beautifully.

I was at a local rehearsal studio recently...one of the rooms' kit had a Yamaha Recording 6.5 aluminium snare, the drummer in the room next to us brought his fairly new Ludwig Acrolite 14x6.5..after comparing them both later on, we both were impressed by how both had the same crack and sweet rimshots as both snares were on coated Emperors with 20 strands.........consider making a top 7 Aluminium Snare Shootout, because these 2 are like Lewis Hamilton on a F1 race track, some will be left behind in a cloud of dust...

The Trick with its natural aggressive crack has the most distinct sound here, but it isn't my fave. Among the other four, the main differences I hear are due to shell depth, which is why I like the Tama Starphonic. At 6 inches deep, it could be the most versatile, cost-effective drum here, with the best combo of high-tuned crack and low-tuned thump. I could save money with the Tama SLP (5.5"), but I'm afraid I'll be out buying a deeper drum to complement it in the future. And the Pearl (6.5") has wonderful low end but probably not quite as much crack as the Starphonic. I also worry that a 6.5" will be harder to play quietly, if needed.

For my taste the order is: 1. Pearl Sensitone. 2. Tama Starphonic. 3. British Drum Co. 4. Tama SLP, and 5. Trick. To me the Pearl had more body at all levels and the Trick had too much ring and seemed to always pitch much higher even compared to other snares of the same depth.

I might be biased because I play & love the sound of Pearl Drums, but the Pearl Sensitone Aluminum & the Trick Snares both sounded the best. I'm very surprised that the Ludwig Acrolite wasn't part of this.

Not bringing a Ludwig Supraphonic or Acrolite to an aluminum drum shoot out is like a home run derby without a baseball bat!!! Am I saying they are the best?? No, but the Supraphonic (chrome over aluminum) and the Black Beauty are arguably the most recorded snare drums in the history of recorded music, thus my argument for them not being there... Having said that, of the five here, the SLP was surprisingly good, but the Starphonic and the Sensitone where my stand outs with the Starphonic by a weave!!!

The Tama is probably the best ,I just realized through this video that I really don’t like aluminum snares.Steel ,brass ,Oak ,maple . Depending,those aluminum overtones are horrible mho .To mic that and to hear those overtones through a pa would be dreadful.
