Reason 1: The flight deck, flight controls and navigation systems are almost unaltered from other 320/321s. Reason 2: The fuselage barrel of the XLR remains unchanged from all other 318/319 320/321 versions. Reason 3: By carrying more fuel, range is increased, but it will carry less passengers and perhaps no cargo at all. Reason 4: Since the additional fuel is carried in the fuselage, the cargo capacity is severely reduced. Reason 5: The engines may be slightly quieter, but the P&W geared turbofan engine remains unreliable and for now, and thus is not the ideal power-plant for ETOPS routes. Furthermore, since its wing area and main landing gear has remained almost unchanged its take-off performance from high and hot airport will be highly compromised. At last and not least, both FAA and EASA remain skeptical about the integral RCT's (read central fuel tank) safety. The certification process lags one year behind.
