So, I am going to be brave and make pants soon. It helps that I have a friend who’s also going to sew pants. I am pear shaped. Fun! I haven’t made pants since 1979 or so! I made a pair or 2 only. I have the Cashmerette Calder pattern. I will try to remember to let you know how they turn out. Meanwhile, I am watching your miniseries.

This is great. I have made pants but have never perfected them. Another sewist suggested altering for a longer rise. I learned to measure, alter the pattern and fit that. Last pants, rise perfected; but then I messed up the waistband. It was a pair with a zipper. Picking the right fabric and knowing when to use a print vs a solid will be a huge help! Looking forward to your next video. I am going to love this series! Thank you. :)

I click on your site because it said TOP 5 beginner friendly!. I want thing to be simple as possible. So, I have subscribed with hopes of learning to make pant. It was suggested that I start with pajamas, so that what I've been working own, so far. thanks for the beginner friendly pant patterns(independent companies). I'll take a look at those again. Yay Karina! I am excited about this video! The reason I don’t like to sew pants is I have extra fabric in the front. The only way to explain this is that if I want the pant to fit the crotch area, I have to fold over the waistband. Hoping this makes since...lol

Hi Karina. This is very helpful. I have sewn pants. Biggest struggle is fit. Pants are graded based on a larger hip to waist ratio. My hips are narrow with an average waist. In my case 36-37” hips and a 31” waist. This usually puts me in the category of grading smaller at the hips if I want the waist to fit. I do not like too much ease in hips. This is not easily accomplished in many patterns. I’ve gotten better at looking at finished garment measurements, and making easy adjustments but I still have a lot of fails. Thank you for your support of the sewing community. I appreciate you!

This issue happens to many. Usually pants have about a 10" difference and that is not how many bodies are. I will cover this in fitting.

Such useful information here. TYSM for making this series on your channel. I have a question about putting in the elastic, though. I just dislike it so much when the elastic in the waist bands curls up inside the encasing it's in. Are there any tips you can give me where I can attach the elastic to the waist band so that it won't curl - up on me when I'm wearing the pants ? If you have a way to sew it to the pants waist, would you please let me know step - by - step how you sew it all ? (For example: If/when you stretch the elastic, and, how much you stretch it, please. ) I really appreciate any advice and help you can give me. Love your channel !!! 😻

Thank you for posting these great videos! You've done a wonderful job of showing and explaining the manipulations. I haven't made pants terribly successfully in a looooong time and am about to try to remedy that. My question has to do with the waistband. All the simple pants patterns you highlight here have separate waistband pieces, rather than casings formed by folded-over top edges. Do you feel that using a separate waistband, even if it's just elasticized all the way around (no flat front), makes the pants stay in place at the waist better than ones made with just a casing? I suspect that must be the reason for your selection, but would like to know for sure. If so, I can just draft a separate waistband piece for the pants I intend to try making. Thank you so much!!

I have made the free range pants out of beautiful linen with beautiful French felled seams etc. I thought I had measured extensively but they turned out Huge! The waistband almost came up to my bustline! I could have fitted a full term pregnancy in the excess fabric at the front. I have only tried trousers once since. The Luna pants pattern by made by Rae. They were a beautiful shape on me and fitted perfectly but when I sat down the back seam tore open. 🙈🤷🏻‍♀️ I have said never again but hopefully you’ll shed some light on this problem? 🙏🏻😁🌺

Tank you so much for your videos. The instructions are always so clear and easy to follow. This is why I'm going to use this series as my guide for sewing some pants. I have a question regarding comparing the Arden Pant to the Allegro - I would like the pant to sit at the waist or just a tiny bit lower, and I would prefer a less tapered leg - which would be best for those preferences - or would these be adjustments that are not too complicated? Thank you so much for the help 🙂💖

Hi Karina....I wasn't sure were to put this or If you would even see it??? I have been following you for years and I have a question about developing a pants sloper. Do you have two completely separate slopers for Woven and Knit? I'm pretty close on my "perfect" woven but then I'm not sure how to approach the knit issues that come up. Ideally some might have two separate ones but I was hoping you might have developed a formula of some kind (since you love math!) to apply to a knitted version of the pattern. Sorry this is so long for this forum...just wasn't sure how else to reach you. ANY light you could shed on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks...

I have not made a pant sloper for knits or for wovens and they would definitely need to be totally different. Knit pants look and fit better with some negative ease, including vertical negative ease on the rise. That concept is not there with woven pants, which need positive ease.

@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Unfortunately, you confirmed what I knew in my heart. You are just so cleaver … I was just hoping you might have a trick or two up your sleeve. I will “master” this woven one and see how many ways I can make it work for me…now it’s more of a dressy slack pattern with a contoured waistband. I already have some knit leggings patterns and the Mtn View jeans I love…so Hopefully once I get this pattern to where I want it, I’ll be good to go. Thanks again… i appreciate your input.

Lovely Karina thankyou , I have ordered pattern Simplicity 8841 because I thought it looked easy , like you say I have always concentrated on the top part but would love to make a pair of cropped pants , (very scary ), I am a very typical pair shape and it’s so difficult finding the right fit for my body so I would appreciate your thoughts on the above pattern or perhaps it’s not a good pattern for somebody who has only sewn jersey tops .. Very much enjoyed listening to you as always , so well explained ,look forward to the next time 🌈 !!

I made my first pair of trousers last year. The sew over it Carrie trousers which are not a good fit at all. Too many pleats are the front makes my stomach look huge! Badly fitting pattern overall. I recently made some Ash jeans which again don’t fit great a bit baggy at the crotch. I made again but are too tight. So not too much success with trousers. I’m going to try the allegro trousers after making the long line skirt tonight with success. So fingers crossed with a nice floaty rayon.

I have a story with the Carrie trousers too but salvaged them to make them wearable. Jeans definitely need a muslin before making the real deal. The allegros: make sure to stay Stitch the raw waistline asap so it doesn’t stretch out before putting on the waistband :) all the best!

Thanks for the miniserie. I made Two pants, ginger jeans i love and Pietra pants big fail... for me fitting the crotch area is hard, i can’t make it... it is always too big. I think i will try seamwork joss, looks easy to short the crotch and similar to the versions you mentioned in this video.

Please stay safe and at home! What I am hearing on the news from Brazil is that the virus is running rampant, especially in the big cities. I remember you are in a rural area. Rural areas are now getting hit very hard here in the U.S.A. Hopefully, your husband has protective equipment, mask, gloves, etc. so he doesn't bring it home with him. I get nervous about getting it here, I can only imagine what it is like for you! Thank you for doing this series. I can never learn enough about proper fitting, especially pants!

By big do you mean long on the top of your body? This seems to be very common, even for me with some patterns.

My biggest problem that my waist and hips are almost the same size. All pants are scary when you have a 39 waist and 41 hips. I never know if grading down two or three sizes from waists to hips will work. Any advise, it seems like few women have my issue.

I totally understand this. My mother also has a similar waist and hip and yes, blending sizes can be done. I will cover this for sure :)

While my waist does have a bit more definition from my hips, my waist measurement is still at least two sizes bigger than my hip measurement calls for. So I would say this is an issue for me too! I'm so glad this will be addressed! Because of this I have only ever sewn pull on elastic waist pants. Looking forward to it. Thank you, Karina!

Dear Karina, last year I made my first pair of pants. My cousin helped me with the fitting. Standing in front of the mirror these are perfect BUT I can't sit down 😢 when trying to sit the back waistband is pulled down so far that the 'cleavage' shows. What is the problem? I would love your advice for my next pair. My body is extremely apple shaped, my tummy is bigger than my hips. Please help 🙏

I have just made some pants - I’ve made the Arden pants out of a cotton drill fabric - they are a great pant but I did find when I muslined them that they came out a bit big, so I actually came down a size. I have also made several pairs of the Closet Case Pietra pants, which I absolutely love ! I have bought the Calder pants to try too! I am looking forward to seeing your fabric suggestions as I have pretty much stuck to using linen or drill. 😍👍

I’m not planning a video on how to cut a pant pattern from measurements. It’s advanced and you need to take a class for that. Thank you so much for watching. The series is based on using patterns 😊.

Due to my body shape, if the pant fits when I am standing, the pant is too tight when I sit down. I've made pants and it was a complete disaster. I prefer woven cottons because I live in a warm and humid climate.

Have you checked the finished hip measurements of the garment and whether the ease around the his corresponds with the ease you need? To measure the ease you need, Put the measuring tape around the widest part of your hips and hold the measuring tape while you sit down. The width you measure while sitting down is what you need as the hip width of the finished garment. So for me my hip width standing is 109cm and when sitting it’s 117cm so I need a hip ease of 8 cm.
