Not sure if my last comment went through but Purchased the Orient Blue Ray! based on this. You are unquestionably one of the most dedicated channels on KZbin/the internet. It is great to know that you can get quality for reasonable prices. I am beginning to shop for a good dress watch. FANTASTIC UPLOAD!! When you included the Marathon Navigator in this list, I couldn't help to think about something... Would a robust quartz be better suited to military use, not just for accuracy, but to avoid the risk of damaging the internals due to recoil from firearms? I know many famous autos have served in past conflicts or at least have an interesting story (Rolex, Seiko, Blancpain, etc...) . As you're a military history aficionado, I think fans of your channel would love to see you pull together something on this topic... a history of important watches in the military type thing.

Honestly one of the best watch review videos I've seen lately, good analysis of the merits of the watches. I'm a big fan of Orient's watches, my personal favourites being their flieger watches which combine style and utility at a great price. This video has piqued my interest in the bambino though, I'd quite like a watch with a more traditional look for formal occasions. My latest watch is the Skagen SKW6025. It's quite thin and light which makes it very comfortable for everyday wear and it's got a nice minimalist style dial which I find attractive.

Love this review! Great grist for a horo-newbie like me. Bought the SKX and fell in love. Fabulous watch for the $. I've got to go with the Seiko Black Monster, either the 1st gen SKX779 or the 2nd gen SRP307 with improved movement. Its a bit more "off-beat" than the SKX007, and is an icon in its own right. Honorable mention goes to the solar powered Seiko SSC series, either the 015 or 021.

+Jonny Casual Totally agree, I have a Black Monster on my want list. so many other 'Divers' look similar to the SKX007 / 009 yet the Black Monster isn't trying to mimic anything else. It is an individual design and all the better for it.

I purchased a Black Ray 2 and immediately slapped on a 22mm bond Blushark NATO strap. I absolutely adore this watch and I find myself leaving behind powerhouses such as my Omega SMP, Speedmaster and Aquaracer just so that I can get some more wrist time with it. I love the black dial. It just looks so classy. Yes, these Orients do indeed punch far above their weight class. You know we live in a golden age of watch making when we can purchase such a quality piece with an in house movement for so little money. Swatch group better take note because these Japanese watch makers are doing everything right!

Other than the Swatch, I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment on value oriented analog watches. Surprised Citizen didn't make the list like the Promaster series for example. The first mechanical watch that I purchased was an Seiko SKX 173 and in many ways, it immediately fit all of my needs. It has a classic look that fits when I'm wearing a suit and it's rugged enough to be on my wrist during any activity from swimming to cycling to gardening. It's still my go-to watch even though I've added several nicer pieces to the collection.

Totally agree with your sentiment on the Orient models in your top five. I have a blue Mako and it provides a lot of bang for the buck. In-house movement, good quality and looks. I believe Invicta offer a lot for the watch collector on a limited budget too. I recently purchased an Invicta 8926OB for a lot less than $200 (including import tax to the UK) and the non-solid bracelet end links aside, it is a great piece and amazing value for money. It is a Submariner homage admittedly but this is no bad thing in my view. It runs the Seiko NH35A S11 24 jewel automatic movement with hacking seconds which is nicely decorated and I really have to question whether high-end (tier 4 and above) watches are worth the extra cost comparatively. I also recently purchased a limited edition Invicta 16531RCLBR Pro Diver, number 101 of just 985 pieces. it runs a Swiss Ronda Z60 Quartz Chronograph movement and like the 8926OB, offers a lot of watch for the money. It is a specially made piece for Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas Cruise ship, a Ship I've really enjoyed spending a two-week Baltic capital cruise on with my better half Tracy. Why limited 985 pieces? That's the total length of the Brilliance of the Seas ship. MRSP is $1495 but duty free I bagged it for just £299; that's 80% off! It came with a three watch Invicta pelican case too which I like. Living in the States as you do TGV, I'd be interested to hear your view on Invicta as a USA based company. I have a huge, varied range of circa 50 watches (I really need to do a proper inventory) from Breitling down to an old Seiko 5, quartz and Kinetics so I am confident that my views are accurate when it comes to quality. Within my collection I also have a Marc & Sons MSD-020 Professional Diver rated at 100 ATM (1000m / 3300ft). It runs a Myota 8012 automatic movement and is another fantastic watch from a micro-brand based in Germany. At £190 or circa $280, it's a great value, quality piece. My most recent purchase is a citizen Signature Grand Touring Sport model NB1031-53E black face. This retails at $1195 US but I bought it duty free from the Jewellery shop on-board Brilliance of the Seas for just $776.75 (35% discount) and I haven't been able to find the same model anywhere for less. This is an epic piece in my view and is getting a lot of wrist time. Superb quality; decorated Myota 9012 automatic movement, 28,800bph, excellent double anti-reflective coating both sides of the sapphire crystal and beautifully finished including the bracelet. Quality wise, I think it's up there with the Omega 2803.52.37 Railmaster I once owned and I have to question why I would spend $3.5k on such a time piece again? Yes, the Omega ran a CSOC automatic Coaxial movement but was no less accurate from new and it developed a random dead-stopping fault soon after the manufacturer's warranty ran out :-( I am starting to question the credibility on spending $ thousands on a high end timepiece... Although I still adore my Breitling B13352 Chronomat Bi-Colour s/steel & 18K gold which I purchased new back in 2003. It is an expensive piece to service, especially as it runs only the top grade CSOC ETA Valjoux 7750 movement (and not the more modern in-house). Having said that, I'm a great fan of ETA movements; the main reason why I love my Steinhart Ocean Vintage GMT and my OVM V2. Keep up with the great videos TGV! And I'd love to hear from you if you have time to respond.

I own 3 of the watches you reviewed. Currently have the Marathon watch. Have gone through two of the automatic Seikos. Will not buy another one. Both watches lasted less than a year of normal wear. +The Urban Gentry Thank you for replying TGV :) My impression on this watch is that it looks better on the wrist than in pictures. It has a pretty good blue lume but perhaps not as good as Seiko's. The watch itself is reliable and accurate, and has a smooth screw down crown. I have the one with a rubber strap and the strap is pretty stretchy compared to Seiko's, which I guess is helpful when wearing diver's suit. Also, the lug width is 23mm which makes changing bands a bit tricky. The watch has a good weight and is comfortable to wear as a daily driver. Overall a great watch for the money and IMO a solid option when looking for a japanese diver's watch. I hope this helps :) -Pras

While I like the Bambino very much, I'll probably get the Seiko 5 dress watches as my next watches, and first automatics. Usually when people talk about Seiko 5s, it's the divers, pilots or sport lines, but the dress watch lines have this minimalist look to them, similar to DW, MVMT, Etc. Put a leather strap on a Seiko 5 dress watch, and you'll have a dress watch that looks every bit as good as the fashion watches, for much cheaper than they retail, and much better quality. BTW, I finally subscribed a few minutes ago! Thanks for everything!

Hard to argue with your selection. The marathon is incredible for the price since you get around 100$ of tritium tubes for a 200$ watch and you get to experience the best lume there is. The bambino is a sure choice too. The seiko snk snzh are very good ans some micro brands are worth the money. There are some very nice junkers pilots around those prices too. In the last week I got a mint padi new turtle in pepsi bezzle for 140$ in a local ad so it's worth to check for used watches too. 140$ for a srpa21 is a lot of watch for the money (including a good bracelet) and I upgraded the crystal for a double domed sapphire.

I would whole heartedly agree with the Seiko SKX series of divers watches. They are tough and are ISO 6425 rated. I would also recommend any of the Seiko 5 series. I love the SNK807. The color blue of the dial and the strap. Also it is a field/pilots style watch, so it is very legible. Just so happens that both the SKX007/009 and the SNK80X series are powered by Seiko's workhorse 7S26 movement.

I can't argue with the choices here, but I also agree with Johnny, I love my Seiko Monster. I own the 2nd gen Orange Monster. I love the heck out of it.

Frankly I like, and agree will all of your choices. I do however own two Bambino's, so I guess that qualifies as my favorite. I now "must get" a Marathon Navigator.
@theurbangentry9 жыл бұрын
+William Delmar Glad to hear, can't go wrong with the Bambino, maybe the best bang per buck watch of all time. Thanks for sharing, good luck with the Navigator! Best regards, TGV

As an Orient nut I certainly agree with your selections but I would also give a shout out to their "Producer" dress model which is retro rectangular with open heart. In black dial very classy and different for under $200.

I've been a couple of days watching some of your videos and I must say they are really interesting. Thanks for your priceless information :) I'm kind of a newbie on the watches world, hehehe... May I ask you if you have any suggestions, on this price range ($100 - $200 aprox), for an automotive/motorsports inspired wristwach such as the Steelmont RS-511 (a little more expensive), the Armogan Le Mans or the Jack Mason Racing? Thank you in advance, and congratulations for the Channel!

I just found an underrated masterpiece that fits here, the Citizen Stilleto, a 5 mm thin solar power GORGEOUS dress watch, in my opinion the orient bambino is preventing many people from actually exploring other options within this price range

Great video ! I usually go to vintage pieces, but under this rate I would purchase of course the sistem51 ( the SUTS402) and the Tissot T0334102601101 (a long code) that is quartz watch but I love the style! Best Regards Saluti !

TGV Great video once again. The Orient Black Ray looks really nice. I've had my eye on the bambino for a dress watch. I was looking at the Orient Star as my "everyday" watch to wear to work and such but the Black Ray may be a nice pick up for now. That should keep me engaged until I can save my way to the Seiko Sarb or even Oris and Hamilton Territory. Your Thoughts?
@theurbangentry9 жыл бұрын
+Ethiopianraver Thank you. I think thats a really good idea, I would go for the diver first, much more robust for everyday, plus the obvious water resistance, and will hold you down until you get to Sarb/Oris/Hammy territory. Keep me posted, hope that helps, Best regards, TGV

I'm gonna be controversial as hell but the Invicta 8926ob has been my best budget purchase and it cost 60 quid. Hear me out, it has a Seiko movement, a newer and more accurate one that the Skx007, hackable and handwinding. Granted I got a lemon moment in my Skx007 which had to be returned but I've been wearing the invicta for 4 days now and it 2 secs out (true story). Ridiculous really. It got me back into watches, it's a great starting point if you have limited funds.

+DeeDeeDanone I am very open minded my friend, anything that gets a person back into horology is good in my book. Enjoy your watch! Thank you for sharing that. Best regards, TGV

I mention the Seiko SSC017 Solar Chrono diver. I bought mine at a huge retailer several years ago for much less than $200, and it looks fantastic on a black Nato with blue and grey regimental stripes. Of those you recommend, I am most intrigued by the Swatch. I'm sure growing up in the 1980s and having then worn a bright red and green Swatch is part of my interest. Also, I think the Bambino is a must have for those of us who are more sports watch oriented, but want a great looking dress piece. -David

+Rocky Mountain DT Thank you David! I really like the SSC017, If I could pull off wearing a bigger watch I would have one. Amazing bang per buck and solid as a tank. Haha love the retro swatches, you were bang on, I had many growing up. Great comment as always, cheers. Best regards, TGV

I would recommend Seikos SNKD99K1. Legendary Seiko 5 watch in a good sporty casual case and a nice dark blue sunburst dial. For a bit dressier one I would offer Seikos SRP705K1. Very well made classic design with a nice ivory dial and gold colored arabic numerals.
@swabby4296 жыл бұрын
Quartz was not mentioned. My pick would be the Citizen Eco Drive. I like the military field watch at less than $195, but there are several others in the under $200 range. The strong points are superb accuracy plus the convenience of solar charging. These are very handsome yet very practical timepieces.
@TimeAndCrown8 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you regarding the SKX009. But I just don't like the jubilee bracelet, I think this i where Seiko really cut the corners and saved some money. But put the bad boy on a NATO or a rubber strap and it's a great looking beater :)

Great video! U bring my attention to Seiko SKX and Orient... owned a couple of tunas and a seiko 5 worldtime. didnt really pay much attention to the SKX till now. Fully agreed with you that there is great enjoyments from these inexpensive watches. I enjoy my Swatch 51 and Seikos very much. ohhh I think my wife will start nagging at me if I will to get the SKX. Its all TGV fault :p

Absolutely love all your videos, well done sir! May I get your opinion on the Orient Mens ER27006B Classic Automatic Watch? I was actually looking at the Orient Black Ray and Seiko SKX007 & 009 but the price in Canada is a tad steeper. I might end up with the Orient 21-Jewel Automatic Day and Date Watch with White Dial and Brown Strap EV0S005W but I do like the presentation of the movement on the back of the Orient ER27006B... Tough decision but your weigh in will be very helpful! Thanks!!

Glad to see you are well TGV! No flighty in there huh lol? I was surprised! Anyway, I know you have been churning out tons of material on several different topics but I do recall you mentioning a couple months back that there would be a state of the collection update? I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I'm curious with all your recent changes. Fantastic work as always, sir. Cheers, Jeffrey
@theurbangentry9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Firlej Hi Jeffrey, Thank you, I did consider it but the price fluctuates around the $200 mark. I didn't want to include only to have a price rise (with it becoming rarer as they ceased production) and mislead future viewers. However, I got mine for a fantastic $120 and it will NEVER leave my collection, best $120 I ever spent. State of the collection video next week! Best regards, TGV
