I have considered planting an October Glory Red Maple or Autumn Blaze Maple for my backyard, as I have an open spot right at 35 feet by 34 feet surrounded on 3 sides by a patio, driveway and garage. My fear would be two things: 1) that the tree would get so huge that it would overwhelm the space and 2) that surface roots would become a problem and keep grass from growing anywhere near it or possibly disturb the driveway or patio, which would be around 15 feet away.

we just planted one and used a root barrier around it to promote the roots to go deep. also using a watering spike that is 2 feet underground to water deep most of the time

@@rs2543 In Southern Cal a few deciduous varieties that will work are Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese Elm), the Platanus racemose ( California Sycamore) or the beautiful flowering Jacaranda mimosifolia. Just a few ideas to look at.

Don't plant an elm, they grow huge and are very weak wooded, so they're dangerous trees planted near a house as branches break off in a strong wind (Santa Ana's). Sycamores, Sugar Maples, Tulip trees, Ginkgo trees, London Plane, Southern magnolias and there's also a huge variety of evergreens you can plant.

You really should warn people that Quaking Aspen spread rapidly. They are gorgeous trees in the wild landscape, a real problem in yards, you have to keep cutting down suckers that will pop up feet or yards away from the original tree. They are one of my favorite trees, but they are a lot.
