Didn't think a virtual collab could ever be done without some awkwardness. Great editing like always Adam. Nice to hear of a channel I have not checked out either! Richard has amazing quality in his videos as well. Love how well designed his enclosures/terrariums are too. I don't watch much invert content, but when I do the enclosures seem barebones and nothing like what I see here.

My first tarantula recommendation is always the Chaco Golden Knee (Grammostola pulchripes). Very docile, very slow moving. They can get to quite an impressive size, they don’t need their cage constantly misted (they like it bone dry, so all you need is a water dish), and are hardy to the point of nearly being indestructible. They’re also readily available and slings can be dirt cheap. Like the Arizona blonde, they do take a REALLY long time to grow though.
@china_sickness7005
@china_sickness7005 2 жыл бұрын
I got a G Pulchripes in February. It’s my first tarantula. It is currently around the 2 and 1/4 inch mark. Mine is extremely entertaining to feed. Other than when it was in premolt, it has never declined food and it gladly takes down crickets over half its size. It’s a little fire ball. It is pretty docile but it can be slightly bolty at times. It has also never kicked hairs in the three months I’ve had it. Overall, I don’t know if I could’ve gotten a better first tarantula. I’m definitely looking forward to it getting bigger

Ok... This one was tough. Not a huge fan of spiders, but I got through. Cool, if a little terrifying, collab. My dad recently got a rose hair sling that I want nothing to do with (I've named her 'Nope'). You mention Latrielle classifying the bird eating tarantula. Even though he was primarily an entomologist, he actually classified the heterodon genus too, with the eastern hognose snake! He's got a really cool life story - orphaned, training for priesthood, rebellion, sentenced to death, saved by a beetle, it's wild!

As a child, we had property in East San Diego county, CA. My father grew citrus and macadamia nut trees. He would but a hose down an abandoned gopher hole and very often a wet Desert blonde trantula would emerge. That you be my toy for a little while. I must have handled dozens of them and was never bitten. One of my all time fav. Right now I bonly have a Mexican red knee and a Brazilian black, but want to add a Desert blonde and a Curly hair soon. Awesome video, thanks guys for recognizing that a lot of reptile keepers also keep tarantulas.

This is a really good list for people new to thinking about getting a tarantula. Though, the Goliath Birdeater should only be suggested once you have more experience, but the rest are awsome picks. Its very hard to choose especially since the Brachypelmas and Grammostolas are perfect beginners but they grow pretty slow. The Brazilian Black is probably my favorite Grammostola species up to date.
@tarantulacollective
@tarantulacollective 3 жыл бұрын
This list was supposed to be a little different than a beginner tarantula list. It is a list for people that already keep reptiles so it was assumed they have expereince with humidity, temps, and dealing with species that can be defensive and have venom.

Important caveat to keeping Caribena versicolor spiderlings if you go that route is to ensure your enclosure has excellent cross ventilation. Stuffy enclosures focused solely on humidity will kill the spiderlings pretty easily.

I still remember visiting a certain little zoo as a child quite regularly and every time I was just captivated by the beauty of this big, dark spider with it's red knees. If you're looking for a Caribena versicolor, yes, they have very easy care when older but are SUPER fragile as slings (babies) and can seemingly die for no reason. (This CAN happen as adults but its less likely. It's often called 'Sudden Avic Death Syndrome' and affects Caribena and Avicularia genuses)They need both a decent amount of humidity and a lot of ventilation. Misting a lot can kill them though. Always make sure they have a water dish with water in it that they can't drown in. If you want one it may be best to look for one that is a young juvenile/established as opposed to a fresh sling. An Avicularia avicularia (Guyana pink toe) is also a great option that's even easier to find, cheaper, and very similar in most ways. A good selection of Ts in this video though! Some other great starter species are a (Tliltocatl albopilosus) Curly hair, Brazilian black (Grammistola pulchra), and Chaco Golden Knee (Grammistola pulchripies). Brazilian black and Arizona blonde are my all time favorite tarantulas!

Tarantulas are awesome! And definitely follow Richard at The Tarantula Collective if you’re into tarantulas or want to be. Great videos. That’s an awesome list! I might also add that if you don’t have a lot of space or like smaller critters in general, there are lots of dwarf species too! Some of which make pretty good or even great beginner spiders. (Imo) Most of them top out around 2-3 inches and usually live around 7-12 years (if a 20-30 year commitment makes you pause). Dwarf or small species also often grow a little faster and show their adult colors a lot earlier than some larger species which is pretty cool. There are some small species that only get 4-5 inches that are sometimes lumped in with dwarfs too. There’s pretty much a species to suit practically everyone.

G pulchra, G rosea, T albo, many tarantulas left off probably because the video would've been to long.

I was surprised and excited to see you post this video. I only have one snake (a tricolor hognose) but I have four tarantulas and a scorpion. My favorite is my GBB too, they’re one of the coolest IMO.

0:03 Sooo true. I love my reptiles but I do have 4 tarantulas (but none from this list) an Avicularia avicularia, 2 Chaco golden knees and a Tliltocatl vagans I got as a freebee when I made my order from Tarantula Canada. I recommend the Avicularia avicularia and the Chaco golden knee to all my fellow reptile owners.

Pokies easily tops all the tarantulas on the list but they're not for everyone being an old world with a medically significant bite. There's something about that electric yellow that makes them the most desirable for advanced hobbyists. They're my favorite out of my 20 that I keep

Sweet content, got into reptiles late in my life and only rather recently relatively speaking. I always had that unfounded fear of snakes driven largely by that “the best snake is a dead snake” mentality held my the adults in my childhood life, but realized after my first snake those fears were completely unfounded. Still have a phobia of spiders but content like this is bringing me around. Thanks for that in the sincerest way. Once I have the education to make an informed decision I may very well have a Tarantula in my future.

This is a pretty solid list! I think personally I would've replaced C. versicolor with Grammostola pulchra/Brazilian black and T. blondi with one of the Lasiodora species, but that's really just due to personal preference. Also kind of relieved to see a "best starter/pet tarantulas" list that doesn't have curlyhairs at #1, great as they are lol I hope this is a sign of things to come, Adam ;)

Just a correction: the GBB is a “semi arboreal” meaning it likes some vertical space to web, but it is still a terrestrial tarantula
