One disadvantage of being obsessed with Autos is I'm always thinking about what I should buy next. And the list changes from week to week .... or day to day!
So here are my (current) Top 5 cars I keep thinking about. Yes, the list changes constantly, but these 5 keep coming up in my brain.

Yep I agree with you. If I had to go out and buy a new car right now, an XLT Maverick Hybrid is at the top of my list. It ticks all the boxes, gets good fuel economy, has a bed for when I need it, easy to drive and park, etc... My #2 is the Model 3 (used Performance most likely). I've very seriously contemplated on buying one. There's a reason we went from the E90 and F80 3-Series being on every streetcorner to the Model 3. They just do everything well. The driving experience is (arguably) better than a new 3-series, there's tons of aftermarket and community support, they just work, the software and integration is good, they're practical, the range is good, the charging is good, the quality has improved massively since the early ones... There's just almost nothing to complain about

Great list and great video as always Jon. I'm more of a truck and SUV/Crossover person, so I would trade the Model 3 for the Y. Like you, I also love the Maverick and it was a top contender when I purchased a new vehicle last September. I would trade the "quality" from Mercedes, BMW, or Audi for the quality of a Lexus/Toyota SUV. The vehicle I'm really excited for is the upcoming Rivian R2 and my wife really likes the R3. Owning a rickshaw made me laugh, but also got me thinking. An EV version would be pretty cool in a golf cart type of community.

Yeah that R3 has got me hot and bothered, I'll admit. And the EV rickshaw makes no sense, which is probably why I keep thinking about them! :) I don't think I can take it on the road, nor on the sidewalk.... so I couldn't even use it for grocery store runs. Which only makes me want it more! LOL

I've been talking cars with one of my sons, who just fell in love a Skoda Yeti I proposed to him. And next it came to the typical EU question of if it should be a Diesel or gas engine and I made the mistake of claiming that really small Diesels just didn't exist... And that brings me to the Panda 4x4 on your "extras" list, because it turns out that it's made with a tiny 1.3l Diesel engine..., which I just couldn't explain as to why anyone would build such a thing. And it brings me to the Piaggio transporter, which is also on your list and the Fiat Bambini I remember seeing in great numbers around the Circus Maximus in Rome in the 1970s. The answer is quite simply Italian roads, especially in Italian mountain villages. Those villages were built in houses and passageways from stone, cut from and into the craggy hills and mountains that competed with pastures and fields for surface area to feed the people that lived there. These passages were sized for people with their donkeys and their carts. And because space was at a premium and rebuilding stony villages never affordable, whatever replaced those donkeys, couldn't be much bigger. And it had to use the same fuel as the generators, tractors and other farming machines that you could store safely in your garden where the donkey used to live, while it was only refilled every couple of months, because the next fuel station was somewhere down two valleys away and getting your refill from the tanker truck before winter or harvest season meant laying lines from the village square to every neighbour. Now the Piaggios had to make do with the 2 cycle engines and fuel, that might get transported on those last donkeys. But they were also light enough to be pulled by one if it failed or ran out, or lifted by two men across passageways that were just never designed with wheels in mind. Thankfully I live with far lesser space constraints and soft hills so I was thinking a Citroen AMI EV for secondary mobility, mostly because doing the grocery run on an e-scooters isn't appealing to my back and when the weather isn't playing nice. But at 45km/h (28mph) speed limit, it's potentially a risk on the country roads because it invites real cars to pass dangerously. There is also the Microlino from Switzerland, which is basically a re-incarnation of the BMW Isetta (originally designed in Italy by Iso Rivolta), but while that even supports highway speed, and looks wonderful, it costs the price of a full car. I basically want to hang on to my combustion car as long as I have the occasional long-distance or high-cargo run to do, but transition to some cheap small all-weather EV for all short distance runs and to entrust to my youngest daughter. Because an EV that is fully capable of replacing my 150mph, 400mile range Mondeo, may never exist, and nearly all points on the compromise curve look both expensive and unattractive.

Grew up with a YJ in the family- eventually became my high school car. Years and years later, had a JK, and thought it was revolutionary - almost a luxury vehicle in comparison, yet would go places my YJ wouldn’t. Now have a JT - still drives horrible on road like a Jeep, but tacked on more luxury, and a bed, and sprung for a Rubicon. They are always just off-road toys for me.

I like the cars you listed. Maybe I prefer the Ariya over the Model 3 because it’s probably going to be better built with less unnecessary technology. And about the 3 Series, I also drool over the used ones too because they just seem really nice to have. One thing I want to bring up is the newer Cadillac sedans because they’re pretty German in some ways while still having some old American “Park Avenue” vibes to it. The Lexus would be the wisest choice of all the cars you listed…and probably the most comfortable. Lol. And Kei trucks are mad fun if you’re considering playing with one. I drove my neighbor’s Kei truck and it was like a big fun toy truck.

Jon, I too am intrigued by the Maverick. I was in the market for a new vehicle in 2022. Like you I buy used. I had not bought a new vehicle since 1986. I ended up buying a fully loaded Bronco Sport Badlands. To make it unique I stripped it up similar to the Freewheeling one they now have. At the time there were no Mavericks to be found and if you could , they were marked up at least $5,000. Out of principle I would not pay over sticker. I paid just under sticker for the Bronco.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is constantly watching reviews and paying attn to the cars and trucks around me. I've actually looked at the maverick, watched reviews, did the online builder thingy a couple of times but I just can't seem to pull the trigger and do it. If it was a 2-door truck w/ a 6' bed, I think I do it immediately. I really long for the smaller trucks and a small cab that doesn't take 30 mins for the AC to cool it off in the summer. I keep flip flopping b/t a truck or a van. I want something that can haul what I need to haul at my convenience. I don't haul very often but when I need to, I never can get to a point where I can 'borrow' a vehicle to do the hauling and HD and Lowe's charge extra for delivery...not to mention they don't have the best quality products.

My wife must have hit the jackpot. Her 2023 XLT Maverick was $27,800 including tax, dealer prep, and shipping. She had to wait 10 months for the hybrid, but on the plus side she saved enough to pay cash. In 10 months the truck has had zero faults or problems (must've been built on a Thursday). She puts gas in every 5 or 6 weeks and fumes when it gets less than 50mpg. It drives and feels like every automobile you've ever driven with an automatic transmission. The transition between gas and electric is seamless and I can't tell which mode it is in. She especially likes the flip-up bed cover her son gave her for her birthday. She backs into the carport and her groceries are right at hand when she lowers the tailgate.

Myself, I think I'll correct a 20-year-old mistake: I'll try to buy a 1999 Ranger with the stroked 2.5 liter version of the OHC Lima 4 cylinder, and 5 speed. The EV has a lot of development to complete before I'll even think of considering one. And I really miss having a genuine compact pickup truck. The Maverick may be nice, but I don't think it will scratch my pickup itch.

Very reasonable list. I dig your Kei truck or panda visions. My fun querky bomb about is my 90 Miata with ITBs. Fun, different, and a great audio experience. I bought a year ago and it was hard to find something I liked. I liked the maverick, ended up with an outback (wagon in my book). We have an aging Mazda5 GT with 5 spd and a JKU. So with a Jeep, a 3 row compact, wagon, and Miata, life is good. Work includes access to a pickup, so I’m covered. I guess that’s my list right there as apart from a RF Miata or a 240 or 280, I want for nothing.

Fun intellectual exercise, though my short list tends much more strongly to really old cars. I like the idea of simplicity, as well as not being monitored as I go along my day (though I realize the smart phone in my pocket puts a lie to that concept!). Old cars are much less reliable, but I figure that any old car that has made it till now has probably self-selected to be the most reliable of its cohort. Plus, I can probably fix anything that comes along.

My list of late model vehicles reflect two of my recent purchases: 1) Toyota 4Runner 2) Toyota Camry My other 3: 3) Lexus GX460 4) Ford F150 XL V8 5) Honda Pilot The theme as you may have guessed is “old school technology”. Solid and reliable transportation that in many instances is out of date but proven features and technology. No turbos or hybrids to keep complexity down. The 4Runner is 10 years old I purchased used with 150k miles..but still looks and runs new and doesn’t rattle or leak a drop of anything. The Camry is a new 2024 purchase with some creature comforts (XSE AWD), but with the proven 4 cylinder gas engine and a comfortable ride with 34 mpg on the highway.

Someone in town here has a Honda K truck. They live on a road I frequently use, so I see it a lot. I have to restrain myself from belting out a rendition of "Baby Truck do do do do do do do". That would make an excellent spare vehicle. I am with you on the Maverick. I see more and more on the road and the dealerships do seem to have them on their lots, even the hybrid ones. A few years back, I priced a reasonably optioned XLT to about $28K+. The sameish model now runs about $31K+, but you don't have to special order it and wait 6-18 months. I do have concern over Ford's fire "it's a feature, not a bug" problem and their band aid solution. I'm not sure what my aspirational vehicle would be. I have owned an MGB, an MG Midget (most fun car I ever had) and a triumph Spitfire 1500, not that I could get in or out of any of those anymore, so tiny convertibles are no longer on the list. I have always had a thing for shooting brakes, though, maybe the 2016 Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake?

Hey Jon. Watched all the way to the end. Love your list. Mine would be similar. -I've wanted a black 3 series since 1987, with a red 10-year old Wrangler to bop around in on the weekend as a project car. -A late model Camaro or Mustang but they aren't practical for me. I'd go V6 or even 4-banger to keep it simpler. It would be pure toy. -A Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. "What's stopping you bro?" Well, ...they're really expensive, reliability can be iffy...it just wouldn't quite work for me. Now when I'm at the age where I'm supposed to be able to afford one, they just seem like too much and are more than I need.. Wish I'd grabbed one in the mid-to-late 90s when they were smaller and more within reach. -A Ford or Chevy pickup-again, too much car for too much $$. And now, they're more out of reach than ever. EDIT: toss in the Ford Bronco Sport-but it's not worth the $35-$40k, I'm too cheap but I do love it. Love your channel, keep up the great content!

It's very possible to find a low mileage non-beat-up YJ or TJ. It'll probably cost the same as it did when new but that's a damn sight cheaper than a new one. I put a Tesla motor and battery into a TJ and while it was brutally fast and incredible off-road, I hated it. It leaked when it rained, the rear "glass" of the soft top was nearly impossible to open so there wasn't much storage but worse of all was that it was atrociously inefficient. My list would be almost exclusively pre-chicken tax trucks. Toyota, Datsun, VW, Ford/Mazda pickups, Subaru BRAT, etc... Also on the list would be a Kai truck or two with drop down bedsides and even a dump bed. Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Suzuki Carry. These little trucks would make FANTASTIC EV's with enough battery for 200ish miles or so. It grinds my gears that we can't have vehicles like this here. I'm sickened every time I see a GMC 2500 with a Cummins diesel and a grill that's as tall as me that will never pull a trailer.

A pickup tricycle is interesting enough as tuck-tucks go... nice bonus. My list would be far less practical than yours as I mainly lust after the icons of yesteryear... bulbous early to mid 50's sought out by a generation that had firsthand experience with wartime rationing; drivers who lived in a pre-interstate era when a 50-mile trip meant a two hour-plus navigation through stop signs and town center gridlock. Pack the picnic basket. My dream cars would include orphaned tanks designed before Exner-esque tailfins adorned the sterns of burgeoning land yachts- cars like a '52 or '53 Hudson Hornet; a similar vintage Buick Roadmaster; or its big sister Cadillac Eldorado. Perhaps as a slight change of pace I'd throw in an early '60's Lincoln Continental as well as a '59 Imperial (okay, okay, it has tailfins!). Many of these conveyances were driven by the generation that reared me and my peers... these tanks might have echoed conversations about the recent war, what's playing at the drive-in, or whether President Eisenhower's superhighway will be built through our town. This was a bygone era when people likely only realized that they had seatbelts when they were digging for change lost during a day trip to Aunt Emily's beach house; when filling the tank was a full service experience where the driver needn't leave the vehicle.

Well you came up with quite a variety. I'm not as much a variety person I have a specific taste especially with back problems. I definitely agree with you on the ES. The problem that I have found with the ES is it's just not in the same realm of comfort as the Park avenue's and LeSabre's. But by default, it might be One of the closest things to a Buick. Concerning the Tesla, I would wait. There's going to be a point whenever we probably won't have a choice and buy that point a lot of the bugs will be fixed on it hopefully. I say enjoy the internal combustion engine while we still can. Concerning the BMW or Audi question, only get one if you have a factory warranty covering everything and plan to get rid of it as soon as that warranty is up. I say this after having family and friends getting burned by them. I would agree with the idea of getting something fun as a contrast. If you're in the financial position to do it, do it while You have the chance to do it in life. That's my advice because you don't know what tomorrow will bring. I almost didn't get a chance to buy something special for myself hence my back injury. The Wrangler weighing more I think has more to do with safety standards personally. The Maverick I can understand from a price standpoint it just isn't for me but if it's for you that's great. The vehicles that you listed at the very end are definitely not for me. I hope whenever you get a new vehicle it is everything that you wanted and turns out to be a happy purchase. Best of luck to you!

@@colinschmitz8297 One could look at most of the domestic automotive industry as the early 2000's progressed. I believe they felt the cars were too reliable and because of that, they didn't need a lot of repairs, so people were keeping them longer. IMHO, they decided to reverse that trend. I'm trying to restore a 1990 Ranger and if this project works out, I may another even lower tech vehicle. I'm not impressed with today's choices of either an overpriced, gadget laden pickup truck or SUV.

Hey John. I saw something here on KZbin about either the Chrysler vehicles being extremely overpriced and how they have a several months supply of them and how the Toyotas and Hondas only have a few months. Goes with your critique of jeeps

Those Fiat Ape's (Ah-PAYS, IIRC) are super useful in old city centers like in Europe and Latin America where space is very limited and you have to dodge the occasional cow....In the Greek islands, those economies would cease to function without them.

In the realm of I'd get nothing but an EV - the Vinfast might make the list but it's expensive for what you get and there are probably better options. but putting together a list with TOP choices... how could a VF make it when there are other far better cars? :) Still, I'd like to own one just to see how bad they are, or if they're a gem everyone's sleeping on.

It's interesting assessing this list from a european perspective. You complain about the Wrangler's price - here it has a base price equivalent to almost 74 thousand USD. which is probably why sales here are about three. Then to me a BMW or Audi is a regular car while the lexus ES or a Camry is the daring choice. It helps that the euro market ones have higher build quality than those which get exported but we pay the price through the majority being far less powerful than the base models in America. Maybe to tick multiple boxes you could check out the BMW i4 - to me surely a better car than the tesla

Money no object: 1. RR Phantom VIII ewb 2. RR Wraith Black Badge 3. Lucid Air Sapphire 4. RR Cullinan with 4 seats 5. Bentley Arnage T24. Yes, no sports cars. I'm 52 and basically done with getting beat up on America's crappy roads. I want isolation and serenity as I ask, "What was that?" as I roll by and over the peasants. My reality: 1. Lexus ES350 2. Lexus LC500 coupe 3. 2024 Lexus GX 550. I looked at a few of them at my dealer and it's a big step up in many ways from the previous very excellent GX 4. Cadillac Escalade ESV 5. I said I don't like backbreaking cars anymore, but DAMN the Corvette Z06 is awesome, and they don't ride like a bucking bronco.

I want an electric car. But I don't like all the unnecessary technology they put in them. I wish they would use the 1970s economy car idea. Small, simple, no extras. No giant screen in the dash, manual windows, the bare necessities. Nothing else

I would never ever consider any Tesla. No EV is worth my money. EVs are niche products to me. A used Lexus hybrid is more reasonable. A Lexus HS250h hybrid would be great right now.
