Wes and Josh explore the top 5 DC Comcis Rebirth series.
Detective Comics
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira
Batman is often seen as a lone crime fighter despite being known as part of the Dynamic Duo. Batman has been a member of the Justice League and Outsiders, but still spends a lot of time fighting on his own. All that is about to change in a big way. A new threat arrives in Gotham, and it just might be too much for Batman to handle alone. James Tynion IV dives right into this new direction.
Detective Comics is off to am extraordinary start. James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and Adriano Lucas are spoiling us from the beginning. I am so excited to see where things go from here. Because we've read countless Batman stories over the years, it's refreshing to see a major title take a new approach and deliver a new vibe. There are so may great characters here I would be surprised if there wasn't something for everyone. This book is definitely going to be a blast.
Superman
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Patrick Gleason, Jorge Jimenez
When flashing back to Doomsday, it’s all big open flash pages with bold colours and giant spreads. If I remember correctly, this was a device used in the original Death of Superman, where the panels essentially counted down tot he end of the issue, where superman “dies”. Mahnke turns out to be the perfect choice for the issue, with his style being a throwback to the darker times of the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe.
Tomasi, Gleason, Mahnke and Mendoza have done something I didn’t think was possible; they’ve made me care about Superman. Simply put, this is the introduction and the jumping-on point to the Man of Steel that you’ve been waiting for. So if Superman has ever interested you, even in the slightest, now is most definitely the time to start reading. I know I will be.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps
Writer: Robert Venditti
Artist: Ethan Van Sciver, Rafa Sandoval
Superstar artist Ethan Van Sciver returns to the world of Green Lantern! In the absence of the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro and his fear-inducing Yellow Lantern Corps patrol the universe as its sole protectors-but deep in space, a green light still burns. Harnessing the remainder of his will, Hal Jordan must become a one-man GL Corps to defeat his greatest foe and restore freedom to the cosmos.
It’s been hard to follow up Geoff John’s epic run of Green Lantern, but Venditti and Van Sciver seem to have a good plan for making an attempt to make a great Green Lantern story fans will enjoy. Hal is going to have to form a team which will be able to fight Sinestro who is control of a planet. As long as the level of quality is kept at this level, the team will definitely have success in the future.
Titans
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Brett Booth
Titans: Rebirth is an awakening. Under the aegis of the Rebirth project helmed by DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns, Dan Abnett presents a story about the return of memory and the arousal of deep feelings from anaesthetic coma. Brett Booth crafts a visual awakening to take the central mystery of the Rebirth era to greater intensity after the busy DC Universe Rebirth #1. Booth’s clean lines and sculpted forms give the images a vibrancy enhanced by Andrew Dalhouse’s bright, luminous colors.
The flood of memories that fills this book might have turned into a tedious procession of predictable images. However, Booth's creative use of angled panels, punctuated by one spectacular double-page splash, moves the reader along briskly, as does Abnett's rapid pacing and admirable narrative restraint. His designs for the characters are clean and modern, without the 1990s throwbacks that hurt his earlier work with the Tim Drake Teen Titans.
Flash
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Howard Porter
The Flash is a character that I haven’t read a lot of, but whenever I do read his books I always love the writing. He’s a much more compelling character than people give him credit for, though that seems to be changing now that his TV show is a huge success. Does this first issue of our new The Flash series stand with the great stories of the speedster?
This book is just one more reason why I can’t wait for whatever DC brings next. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to feel this giddy about DC comics each week, excited to jump into their universe every time. This issue is perfect for newcomers and a treat for fans, giving us The Flash we know and love while creating a new, yet familiar universe around him.
