I bought an ENA 8 after watching a few reviews. What none of these reviews tell you is: 1-No milk temp setting (Milk is warm but not Hot) I wish there was a way to increase temp and 2-Cost of ownership (Between the Jura cleaning tablet, milk cleaning solution, descale tablets and the Smart filters that only last a week and a half) Its a little crazy. I like my machine dont get me wrong but I dont LOVE it like I should for a 3k machine.

@@vahinewahine916 Filters are ridiculous pricey but you wont have to descale, ever. If you dont use filter, then you have to buy descaling tablets which are also super-pricey. Just look at their pricing for accesories, its a bit much. 50$ for a plastic cup for cleaning, i mean c'ome on.

Hi Stephane, 1 1/2 weeks on the filter seems very fast. The CLEARYL Smart Mini filters are rated to 30 liters (1,000oz), and the full-sized CLEARYL Smart filters can handle more than that before needing to be replaced. How many drinks a day are you making? Is your water extra hard, or is the water hardness set incorrectly in the machine? As for the milk temp, a couple things you can do to help. Pre-heat your cups with hot water - this way there will be less heat transfer to them and more preserved in the drink. Also turn up your coffee temperature to the highest setting. I hope this helps. It's great you're keeping up with the maintenance (although it can be pricy). This will certainly help your machine pumping out drinks for many years to come. AJ

@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for the comment, between the wife and I, we make no more than 8 drinks a day. I went thru 3 smart mini filters already, longest lasting 12 days. Hardnest setting is at the lowest. As for the milk temp, that's exactly what I do when I make a milk drink, I pre-heat with hot water but I just wish I could crank up by a few degrees the milk temp. The problem with the filters is that the machine is quite good at staying clean, meaning it rinses itself very often and when it does, it uses your filtered water fast. Like I said in original post, this machine is a real marvel of engineering and the aluminium model cant be beat for design, but at that price I think the Jura cleaning products and accessories should be priced lower. I like the ENA 8, I just dont LOVE it, and at that price I should. You guys should do an episode on cost of ownerhip for a year! A subject we dont see much on KZbinr reviews. One more thing, anyone know why James Hoffman doesnt review super-automatics??

Ive stumbled across your channel after starting a new job that had a DeLonghi Dinamica. Now im looking for a machine to fit my home. I love the easy cleaning and rinsing/customization of drinks in the Dinamica. I mostly drink milk based drinks. Looking at these machines Im comparing between Gaggia and Jura, is DeLonghi not as competitive? Is there a machine you recommend solely for easy milk based drinks?

Hi K, thanks for the comment and question. Best machine for you is one that matches up features with your desires. I like super-autos which can make a true Americano and change the prep order of milk and espresso based on the drink being made. Also like easy programming, cleaning and machines which do 2 grind cycles if requesting 2 coffees at the same time. If you like the Dinamica then perhaps you've found the machine that's right for you.

Great video, AJ! I’m considering an upgrade from my Gaggia Brera - it’s good, consistent, but not great - and am curious to know if there have been any upgrades to the brew groups for improved extraction for these new Gaggia Super-Automatics? Even with finer grind settings and three bean dosing in the Brera, I find the espresso to pull just a little too fast, making for a slightly thinner shot.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi William, thanks! The brew unit is the same on all the Gaggia super-autos. Also, the Max coffee dose on the Brera is 11.5g, which is the same as the newer models (Cadornas and Magentas). If you want a stronger shot, I'd select the highest strength, lower your programmed volume, then brew a 2x shot. AJ

The amazing and easily cleaned milk caraffe alone I would think would put the Philips lattego on this list? A few of us went in on the Philips lattego 3200 two years ago for my cousin and she uses it everyday and loves it. She even neglects it terribly and probably has never used the food grade grease it came with in the mechanisms for the grinder and spent grounds bin and she's had no issues yet. Everybody loves that thing and the milk while not exactly foamy is lightly Frothed and the perfect temperature

@@Wholelattelovepage the newest series have more features but for the price, the more expensive, feature rich 4300 and then the top end 5400 being somewhere just shy of $1,000 (3200 can be found around $750 with specials) they punch so far above their class it's crazy. I understand stocking one of everything is a ridiculous proposition but I would definitely recommend them for that Superior milk carafe with no crevices, no internal chambers to get gunky or pickup tubes needed.

Hey Mossy, check out this playlist of videos all about setting up and using the Gaggia Cadornas. We generally recommend the finest grind setting for espresso-based drinks like americanos or milk-based beverages, unless it is choking the machine. Coffee you can go a couple clicks courser, especially if you're getting bitter flavors in cup, but many people just leave it on the finest without issue. For americanos I prefer a 1:2 ratio of espresso to hot water. kzbin.info/aero/PLaBDDfOHAAC1Qr4b3lp-PKD5aFDWGVMZQ AJ

Hi Jeff, I like the Gaggia Cadorna. It's my daily driver used mostly for larger coffees made with the Americano function. I find Americanos have better flavor than long coffees made on other machines. The Cadorna does a true Americano making espresso and then adding pure hot water. This avoids the over-extraction you get on machines which put larger volumes of water through the grounds. The Cadorna Barista Plus has a steam wand so you can do a milk drink when desired: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-cadorna-plus Similar but less $$ is the Gaggia Magenta Plus. It has the one-touch Americano as well and the steam wand: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-magenta-plus-super-automatic-espresso-machine I prefer the Cadorna as it has front access to the water reservoir and a more premium construction of the case and user interface. Hope that helps! Marc

The machine is ready to brew in about a minute after turn on. Jura's PEP process makes a very good espresso. Use a Jura water filter in the tank as directed and you never have to descale the machine. Only maintenance is running a cleaning tablet through the machine when alerted - about 1x a month in average household use. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi RH, Milk drinks are comparable on the machines. From an ease of use standpoint I prefer the carafe system of the Cadorna Prestige to the pickup tube system of the E8. In the E8 Price range I can say the newer Gaggia Accademia is excellent for milk drinks. It has milk froth density that's adjustable in 4 levels per drink and a wider variety of milk drinks than the E8. Cup height max is 4.4" on the E8 and 6.1 on the Cadorna Prestige and 6.5 on the Accademia. See the Accademia in action here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIu6hGZulK-am5Y

So it seems that for straight espresso, the Jura machines can pull a better shot, especially the E8 as it will grind up to 16 grams (I believe most others max out ~12g)? I've had 2 Super Automatic machines and have found the problem is the grinder will not go fine enough to pull a ~20 second 2oz shot. On my current Gaggia (Platinum Swing) I actually removed the grinder and reset the range to a couple of notches finer than default from the factory and now it pulls close to a 20 second shot instead of 12-14 seconds before adjustment.

Hi Kenneth, we generally don't worry about timing as much on super-autos as the brewing process is different than on semi-autos, where dialing in is a more essential part of the process. That said, you are correct about dosing on the E8, however some Gaggias like the Cadorna Prestige can make true double shots with two separate grind cycles up to 11.5g each, so you're essential dosing up to 23g. In the end if all comes down to taste preferences, and it sounds like you found what works best for you! AJ

@@Wholelattelovepage I realize taste is subjective, but based on your taste, as well as perhaps the majority opinion of those there at WLL who have experience with these two machines, which do you feel produces the more consistent better tasting espresso and black coffee drinks - the new model Jura E8 or the Gaggia Cadorna Prestige? How does the difference between the Jura E8 16 gram capacity and the Gaggia Cordona Prestige making a double shot using 11.5 grams each for each separate grind and brew cycle compare in produced espresso / coffee flavor? I would guess that the way these two machines brew, i.e. Jura PEP vs. Gaggia brewing method, would probably play a factor in this, but don’t know if the differences are really detectable. Would really appreciate your thoughts and input as trying to decide between these two machines and the quality of the produces espresso and black coffee drinks is the most important consideration for me. I realize a good semi-automatic machine would be the better choice based on this criteria, but want / need the convenience and speed of the super-automatic at this time. Thank you.

Hey Nick, I agree that a separate grinder and semi-automatic machine will give you the most control and likely best results in cup. For a lot of people, constantly dialing in and tinkering can be frustrating and not worth the effort - they just want good coffee at the touch of a button. That's where these super-autos come in. Less control, but far easier and more convenient to use. AJ

Can the E8 do portion of milk, or is it just foam ?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, the new E8 only has one type of milk, which is a lighter, airier variety. That said, drinks like the latte macchiato will allow for a delay between milk and espresso for the hot milk to separate from the foam, resulting in a nice layered drink. Additionally, drinks like the flat white swap the order of preparation (dispensing espresso before milk) so that the milk mixes in better with the coffee. AJ

Hi LD, We base our selections on opinions of our service techs, customer feedback and reviews plus our personal experience using the machines. Yup, bought Saeco Incanto, later upgraded to Saeco Xelsis, tried Jura s8 and e8, but shots werent even close to what I was getting at my local coffee shop even though I ve used same exact beans. And here i am now owning Lelit Bianca, best quote I can give you is from my dear friend, I served him espresso from Lelit and Saeco, and he said - now i understand what is a coffee taste drink and what is a coffee drink. Hey Panagiotis, thanks for bringing that up. I agree that the level of control and quality of espresso achievable on a semi-automatic machine is generally greater than on most automatic machines. However, this requires far more practice, effort, a separate grinder, longer heat-up times, etc. Many people are seeking great coffee at the touch of a button, not the potential for better coffee that requires more work. I also know people that prefer the espresso from super-autos, just based on taste preferences. We realize different things appeal to different people, so we carry a wide range of machines in both categories so people can pick and choose what's important to them. AJ

Hi Rafael and Selman, full disclosure - we don't carry that Philips model. Objectively speaking, head-to-head, coffee will be comparable between the two but where they differ is in their features and ease of use. I prefer the carafe on the Gaggia because you can fill, use, and store it without ever having to remove the lid. The 2200 LatteGo has only 4 drink options, while the Magenta Prestige has 12. Perhaps the biggest difference, however, is going to be the display and user interface. The Magenta wins this one by a mile - a full color screen with easy programming for temperature/volume/strength, easy maintenance and machine info. The Philips display is simply icon based with a couple LED indicator lights. Hope this helps! AJ

I'm currently weighing the Magenta Prestige vs the Jura Ena 8 and wondering the same thing. Anything else significant?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon and Vahinewahine, as far as hopper/dreg drawer/water capacitities, E8 > Magenta Prestige > ENA 8. Yes, on the Magenta Prestige you'll need to swap from the carafe to hot water spout if you want hot water alone, however for an americano, the hot water is dispensed through the coffee spouts. Most people store their carafe in the fridge when not in use, so you could keep the hot water spout in the socket of just leave it empty, whichever you prefer. The E8 has the most drink options of the bunch, followed by the Magenta Prestige, then the ENA 8. The JURAs grinders are quieter and faster, and their cleaning procedures are a bit more elegant (though also come at a higher cost to use JURA cleaning products). They also give you the option to connect to a smartphone with an additional accessory, which makes customize and preparing drinks, as well as viewing machine alerts and system info easier. The PEP brewing on the JURAs really does make a difference in bringing out deeper flavors with a fuller extraction, but if that difference is worth the extra cost is up to the customer. AJ
