Nice hidden details... I have a story to go along with that last hidden feature, though: I actually met Oscar Zerk, inventor of the Zerk fitting as made by the American Alemite Company. Oscar lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where I grew up, and the hardware store near his mansion was one of his hangouts late in life. I was in that store (Ace Hardware on 75th Street at 45th Avenue) with my father as a little kid, and was introduced to Oscar. I was suitably impressed, since I already knew about the fittings, having helped my father with his 1950 Ford. Oscar died at age 90 in 1968, and his grave is just a few yards from that of my grandparents in Kenosha's Greenridge Cemetery. I remember hearing at the time of his death that, had he made just a penny a piece on each grease fitting sold, that alone would have made him $200 million.

There is another hidden feature that you didn't talk about and that is the head lights can be turned around to direct light into the engine bay for repairs at night.

The bonnet should have the maintenance a4 sheet under side in a spot weld tray onnthe back of the bonnet! I love the head lights on the able to unclip from the bottom and swing up and round and it faces on the the engine so you can work on it in the dark! I think that feature is very cool

My Dad once told me that in the war (Europe) his unit (328rh Engineer BN, 103rd Inf. Div.) had removed all of their windshield frames and that they had the Wire Cutter mounted to the front of each jeep.

If you ever need a new intake to airbox hose, marine wet exhaust hose it the same as the original - rubber, twin walled and wire inside too. Ps, love the vids, glad I found your channel

The hood has an hinge with 13 sections. That also is a WOF (Hotchkiss) hood feature. Even more visible than the larger size.

Just a petty grammar comment here: 'an' is used phonetically when preceding a vowel (sound). 'h' is not a vowel sound. "an hour, an horse", hear the difference? In one case the h is silent and precedes a vowel.

Four soldiers sat in it with all their kit and you will find the back is heavy and it will go most places in 2WD. With just the driver the front is heavy and that will need 4WD sooner. Off road it boils down to driving around on three wheels when you cross axel :o) In 4x4 with just the driver it will lift a rear. This is great because the front open-diff can still pull you through the rough.

I think you'll find that the fuel fittings on the fuel filter are solid brass and not plated.

Love you channel and have learnt so much from you! thank you. In one of your videos you mentioned holes that had no purpose which were iirc above the spade handle. I have had to replace the side on my 44 and wasn't able to find them in the patch work repair that had been done. Is there any place I can find their exact location so I can drill them out please?

Well, I never gave much thought to old Jeeps, but I find your restoration videos interesting. So I found one on permanent display as part of a war memorial, north of Manila, Philippines. It is parked next to the Balagtas Municipal Hall, just off MacArthur HWY, next to a small river. For sure some significant war history there. At a glance it looks very original and very complete. It has a star on the hood. The fire extinguisher is mounted just behind the left front fender, next to the shovel blade. All the parts seem to be bolted on rather than rivets or welding. I will try to go back and take some pictures of it. I will try to find out who put it there, where it came from and so on.

I think that photo in Korea is a M-38 Willys. The head lights stick out a little on them.

No, it is not. The photo at 11:03 shows a WW2 standard MB or GPW. The MC (M38) had a seven slot grille with two hinges at the bottom to fold outward and headlights in 'buckets' mounted to it with diagonal single rod guards protecting them. The MB/GPW had bolted on nine slot grilles with smaller headlights behind them, mounted on hinges to be flipped over as under hood (bonnet) work lights. The 'pioneer tools' (shovel. axe) were mounted on the driver's side of MB/GPW vehicles as shown in the photo, passenger side on MC (M38). The windshield frame of the MC (M38) was entirely different than that of the MB/GPW, as was the top bow arrangement and top. The photo shows the (MB/GPW) windshield (windscreen) folded down with a canvas cover, and the distinctly MB/GPW top bows can be seen in their folded and stowed position along the rear fender (mudguard). Hi John, Unfortunately this is a real problem now due to our acid throwing friends, unfortunately your only option is to find a local garage or battery distributor and take it to them to fill, getting hold of it in the past was not a problem but it is in the modern climate, go figure...

The post war civilian Jeep owner’s manuals (CJ5s anyway) suggested putting it in 4 WD as soon as you ventured off road. The original thought was (I imagine) if you got stuck in 2WD you had a backup plan one lever throw away. In combat I’d think that an odd choice.

An original WW2 standard 'Jeep' (MB or GPW) or the subsequent military models MC (M38), MD (M38A1) was always "one lever throw away" from 4WD as locking/unlocking hubs did not exist in WW2 and were not used on any of the military 'Jeeps'.

@@-oiiio-3993 The transfer case. I’d quote it but I sold the jeep and the manual with it a couple months back. I remember it primarily because it went against what I had been taught, that it was better to get partially stuck in 2wd and have the option of switching to 4wd rather than getting stuck in 4wd and having no option. I’m back to driving a Land Rover Discovery I now so it’s moot with me. I do have the center diff lock a single throw away, though.

The Ford designed, stamped steel, grille as used on military GPW and on Willys MB of WW2 issue had nine 'slots' and small headlight 'holes' with hinged headlights behind them as did _very_ early civilian units. The Willys redesigned CJ2A and later grilles had seven slots and the headlights mounted in front, as did the military M38 (Willys MC) of Korean War vintage and M38A1 (MD) vehicles..

Yes. The OHV was not introduced until the CJ3B, and is what necessitated the high hood. They don't fit under the hood of an MB / GPW or CJ2A, CJ3A. L Head is flat, F Head is overhead valve.

@@Greendot319 I was snickering a bit as well. In the U.S. I've heard N - O - S used as shorthand for 'new old stock' for decades but this may be the first time I've heard 'nos' used as a word. Nice MB you have there. I've a few 'flatties', myself. I was waiting for you to drive her straight up one of the 45 degree embankments surrounding the pit. She'll do it all day, just put her in 'compound low' and do the throttle / clutch dance.

Why is "JEEP" cast in the cylinder head? Surely it wouldn't have been branded Jeep until the AMC years. I had a 1953 Willys M38A1 and no where on the entire vehicle did it say Jeep.
