My first date was when I was in the sixth grade to see the Jackson 5 at The Palace in Cleveland. (My dad dropped us off). Michael was about 17. We danced at the front of the stage and obviously this was a highlight of my life. I’ve loved The Jackson 5 my whole life. (And I’m 58 now). Their soul is beyond. Thanks Julia for the epic basslines!

“Darling Dear” is written and played in such a way, weaving along with Michael’s voice, that it brings tears to one’s eyes. I still get goosebumps almost 30 years since I first learnt that line.

Those bass lines are just as funky as the clothes they wore then, Haha, it's a pleasure watching you play them, knowing that you are feeling the groove in them. Of that selection, I think "Stop, the love you save might be your own" is my favorite.

Darling Dear i just love James Jamerson’s busy bass lines always so melodic. And just think about he used one finger on his right hand. His finger was called (the hook). Another favorite is “Can You Remember”!! Oh one more favorite “ I Wanna Be Where You Are”

I’m 8 days late, but when you mentioned the fine work that can be done using scale notes, my mind immediately went to “ABC” and “Mama’s Pearl.” If you ever do (another?) video on great songs using scale notes, I hope you include those two.

Love how smooth and precise your attack and feel comes across. I started practicing bass around 1978 when I was around 15 years old, in the depths of the funky stuff, disco, rock and roll and fusion. The way you play is a natural feel, the way it should be. Inspired!

I've always thought "I Want You Back" is the greatest bass line of all time, period- Louis Shelton's guitar work on that one is equally immaculate. A big favorite bass line of mine, though- on a record credited to MJ only- is "I Wanna Be Where You Are". There are some great covers of that one here on YT, both faithfull and re-imagined. Love your work, Julia!

Wow! Loved Your list! Jameson on Darling Dear is just plain genius. He danced over the fretboard! The song ABC should be added. The bass comes in dangerously funky after the opening and after the bridge. Also, Naughty By Nature used it on OPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Julia: thanks again for your always very interesting videos. The bass line that I liked the most is the one from Blame it on by boogie and the technique you use to play the octaves with the fingers of your hand seems very difficult to me.

Didn''t know "Dancing Machine" too, thanks for showing us. It should be worth mentioning that Wilton Felder was also a very important part of "The Crusaders" (Next best 5 vid?😉) My fave here is once again Mister James Jamerson, his abilitity to play around the groove and chords is unsurpassed. Thanks for my weekend dose and have a nice one yourself!

Super Knaller, wie immer. Great! I love your play! I want to resume, that William Salter was the co-composer beside Ralph MacDonald of "Just the two of us" (Grammy `82) and "Where is the Love" (Grammy '72). For the best of my knowledge he was also bass player of Miriam Makeba. Good to know that he, Jamerson and Wilton Felder were the bass players of this pieces. Thanks for that. Mini

I've been waiting for a new video by Julia. Love it! Thanks, Julia. You are funky beautiful. Since you really like dancing, what do you think about a bassist who could play and tap together. I have obsessed about that idea for decades (bass or guitar). I don't have the talent for either, but I'd love to see it happen. I think Gregory Hines did something like that many years ago.
