I hurt my hand last week and will be out for several days. i dont know what the hell happened. CF ear should be small unless you do wrestling and knee injuries should not happen as long as you dont do leg locks. My class does not do leg locks ever

IF you roll with controlled guys you will never get injured. The problem is most gyms are full of big spazzing guys or guys that are good and violent. I decided a few months ago to limit my rolling and I often just leave class on some days to limit the wear and tear. Maybe i look like a WIMP but I dont care

GracieAcademy - I'm not complaining. I love Rener's enthusiasm. Let me leave you with this quote: Peter Gibbons: So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life. Dr. Swanson: What about today? Is today the worst day of your life? Peter Gibbons: Yeah. Do you know how common concussions are in BJJ? I presume not that common given the absence of striking. I have also spoken to a few blackbelts and they say they have never seen a concussion in BJJ.
@andrewldoe8 жыл бұрын
+Patrick White many in competition. Also, being "dazed" is a concussion, thus, it's likely very underreported. Also, more common if you start from the feet and at shows that are lax on slamming.
@patrickwhite81448 жыл бұрын
I see. Have you ever suffered a concussion in BJJ?
@patrickwhite81448 жыл бұрын
Okay, you're a doctor and I'm not, but I have thought about this a great deal and I think you might be overestimating the number of concussions, and here's why. 1) It is commonly understood that a loss of consciousness is not necessarily correlated with the severity of an injury, as some people who experience devastating head-injuries do not lose consciousness and vice versa. 2) Jamming the neck can also produce concussion-like symptoms in the absence of an actual concussion, as neck trauma can reduce blood-flow the the brain (which can cause dizziness and nausea) and put pressure on the vestibular system, which can cause temporary deafness and/or ringing in the ears. There are many researchers now who think many concussion are actually mis-diagnosed neck injuries. 3) I read a study published in 2014 which found that in 5022 contests there was not a single concussion in BJJ. 4) A comprehensive Football study found that 1 quarter of 1% of head impacts registering at 80gs and above (which is like running head first into a wall) ended up being a concussion. 5) Putting this altogether this would suggest (to me at least) that if concussions were frequent in BJJ, at least some of them would be resulting in a loss of consciousness, and hence would be observable. And secondly, I would be surprised if many impacts in BJJ registered at 80gs and above. I completely accept that slamming someone's head into the mat would almost definitely cause a concussion though, as the force of doing that is massive --- probably over 150gs. There's a biomechanist called John Lloyd who has shown that the acceleration from even short-falls is enormous.

Injured my shoulder during a forward roll in quarter guard last night. Was trying the back take from quarter guard... we were speeding up repetitions, and taking turns. One of the forward rolls on my right shoulder popped. Now it is really stiff. Hurts a bit. I tried the technique one more time because I wasn’t sure if I was injured. I've got a chronic back and neck pain caused by a genetic spinal flaw. The flaw is that the construction and connection of my spinal chord is significantly weaker than average. I had back therapy for this, which trained my belly and back muscles to support my spinal handicap. I haven't had any problems with it when rolling untill recently a Try-out from a different gym in England who's a wrestler started rolling with me, went for a double takedown, got stuffed and then just back bodydropped me into the matt and tried to pin me (which wasn't a wincondition) in a Wrestling kind of way. Because I was not used to this, he just drove my neck into the matt even further and causing nerve pains in my neck the harder he pushed probably because he wanted me to tap out, I framed my head around which lead to me being in the ideal position for a guillotine and ending the spar. Jiu Jitsu quite litterally saved me from a broken neck here and I am ever so gratefull!

Currently dealing with a lower back injury from a really well-executed guard sweep that tied up my hands and put my training partner's full weight slamming down on top of me (to the point where my 5yo daughter, who was training about 15 feet away, stopped and said, "Dad, are you okay?"). Jiu jitsu at 41 is a lot different than jiu jitsu at 18 (I took a 20+ year break), but my love for it has not changed at all. I am taking a week off (gym is closed for the Independence Day holiday, so the timing is right) and I will be following these training concepts going forward. Thanks!

I had an hernia for years..the pain in the lower back, leg and everything , I saw it in the MRI .. but I found out that the cause was too much stress, too many hours in the computer with a bad posture...now “working from home” taking breaks like every 30 minutes and the same for when I’m studying I was getting better so I decided to do Bjj and that was when the pain Disappeared ! I do not feel the pain anymore .. I think obviously I’m getting stronger but I can asure you: The fact that you have an hernia does not mean that you are going to feel it.. and the only thing that worked was rest and bjj combined.. all those hours in the chiropractor didn’t work..

There's a spot on this video where Rener and Alex are talking about hand-fighting that I totally love. My story goes beyond the scope of this video's subject, but it's a testament to my training. Lately, I started rolling with some friends again. One of them caught me in a guillotine attempt from starting in a kneeling position. Automatically, I hook her arm, pull it down, and work on moving my butt to the opposite side of the choke. After a minute in that guillotine attempt, I won't lie, I saw rainbow snow and had a bit of a lightheaded spell from one artery being half-compressed. I still got my head out of there and assumed standard side control in the cross-mount. From there, she got back mount on me and I thought, "All right, girl! You wanna go there? Let's do this!" because I wanted to show her I could defend her choke attempts by hand fighting. So I let her get a full back mount on me, and I started blocking and pinning one of her arms and holding the other. Long story short on that: she didn't lock in the RNC on me. So we're clear, Gracie Academy brothers, that partner is 5'5" and in the women's featherweight to lightweight range. She and I also kept it playful, too. But with her and all my other BJJ partners in and beyond the CTC, I keep it playful. I feel my arm about to go straight in an armbar, I tap -- they got me because I didn't stack and position to lessen the effects in time. I get caught in a foot lock before I can get my shin on their butt to go upright and get out of it, I tap -- they got me. And it's not because they're better than I am, but because I learned from watching and listening to you and my CTC instructors in Kansas about tapping to avoid getting seriously hurt and delaying my chances at the blue belt brass ring I'm still shooting for. So my thanks and respect to all of you in Torrance, and I'll keep on keeping it playful until we meet face to face one day.

I really love these videos about injury and Jiu-Jitsu. I had a L-5, S-1 fusion. Screws, cage and pins. I really needed to get my health back. I am 44 now and I was using a walker, on all kinds of meds. I no longer am on meds, I do use a cane sometimes. But, I love everything about Gracie Humaita Jiu-Jitsu. I started training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu 1 month ago. Very worried about causing more injury to myself. But, the instructor and the other students are Awesome. No one is trying to injure anyone. I wish I would have started training years ago. I'm very thankful I decided to take the step to take the step and train in a Gracie gym. I also am going to start the Gracie diet. I loom forward to training as long as I physically can. My Respect to you and sincerest Thanks.. 😀

I got a nerve conduction study done a few weeks ago and it determined that I definitely have nerve impingement. It is so frustrating because I really want to train but I don't want to risk my neck getting hurt more (I have several injuries already from fighting overseas). I think I'm gonna hit the mats again and just go real easy and let my partners know that I'm hurt...and swallow my pride and tap when I feel my neck in a bad position...

@Algebrodadio8 жыл бұрын
+DougyDeeDoo Sure it's no big deal to straighten and tape your fingers. But it's very difficult to grip with straight fingers. So yeah, you can easily repair injured fingers. But injured fingers are difficult to train with.
@DougyDeeDoo8 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Wolbach i agree iv done this often so straighten the break and then tape in a slight bent position so you can grip. It sucks but pain killers help and avoid putting to much pressure on the break other than that you've gotta grit your teeth.
@jorgenschroen54408 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Wolbach happened last months at my mma gym. we were warming up spinning around on the back, and one guy managed to get his finger dislocated, and one of the members is a "doctor" (soon atleast) and he pulled it back, taped it. and he kept rolling. no problem.
@Algebrodadio8 жыл бұрын
Jorgen Schroen So he was rolling no-gi? Because if you're rolling with a gi on and broken fingers, your gripping game is gonna suffer. EDIT: But yeah, even with a gi you can still roll with injured fingers. It's just that injured fingers can majorly impact the effectiveness of your jiu jitsu while otherwise being a minor injury.

I think that 90% of injuries in jujitsu can be avoided if you can get it through your head that you aren’t there to win. You’re there to learn. Tap early and tap often. Play and have fun and don’t fight. Let the jujitsu do the work. Only took me 20 years of inconsistent training due to injuries to figure this out. Would have been a black belt 10 years ago if I hadn’t been so hardheaded. Now I’m 40, and I just got my purple belt. Finally able to train consistently. I’m bummed out that I missed all those years, but at least I have the ones that are ahead of me.

Be careful your training to be a warrior but there's no purpose in your training. because you don't need to be a black belt to defend yourself. You are going to get hurt you could get hospitalized you could lose your job if you have a family you're taking a huge risk. No matter where you go the people are going to make money off of you showing up to class are never going to give you full disclosure if you actually knew how many injuries and lives get messed up becoming a warrior you probably wouldn't study. You're studying to become a warrior you're studying to go to war where you're trying to avoid death so all injuries that are short of death or a win but that's not the case of modern every day life.

You should be proud at your age for having the courage to get on the mat. Our bodies all die so no point in stressing too much over injuries. Injuries are badges of honor though it is best to minimize them as they can hold us back in everyday life which sucks. Make sure you let it heal before getting back to it. Also, at your age, roll with the higher belt ranks who have control and respect, not big muscle idiots with testosterone fueling their need to beat everyone.

Traction and re-traction therapy IS THE BOMB, I have muscle tone loss in my left calf because of sciatica damage, in which I did not know how to stretch the piriformis to start to relieve pain. I then bought a nice inversion table and started inverting at only about 75 degrees daily which gravity takes over and slowly pulls the spine apart allowing the discs to re-align and stop the bulging disc which when they bulge, the edges of the discs touch the sciatic nerve and that's part of the pain he was talking about shooting down the leg. Reduce salt intake, and drink a shit load of water to get the muscles hydrated and you will live to choke some out again. ;)

I have a low back herniated disc with degenerative disc disease. And it's bone spurring. Between L3 L4 I still try to train jiu jitsu. But I choose to help the other person. I am just a training partner. And I don't try to see myself as competing against my partner. I am like a drilling dummy. A selfless person. I just help my brother drill techniques. And that's good enough for me. I'm 33. I try to learn the techniques as well. But I choose the techniques wisely. It's good enough for me. I trained and competed when I was 22. I'm getting back into it. But for different reasons. I'm in it to help others. I could care less about my jiu jitsu. I do care about my jiu jitsu. But not as much as before. I am very careful. I'm just there to help my partner learn. It's the best way for me.

My throat got screwed up from a quick choke. Couldn't swallow and woke up in the middle of the night from pain. Felt like strep. Luckly it started hurting less the next day. Lower ribs get sore from practicing with big guys.

Buy monkey tape. I like the 0.2" stuff. Tape your fingers like Keenan shows in his video on here, then buddy the middle and ring fingers together. This takes a while the first several times but after you get good at it you can do it in about 5 minutes. I only used to tape after my fingers already hurt, and they took FOREVER to heal. Now I tape them preventatively, and they MOSTLY don't hurt at all. I usually ignore the pinky because it's never even been a little sore after training. It's usually my middle fingers that hurt the worst.

Ice has been proven to constrict blood flow slowing recovery. Warmth opens blood flow and speeds healing. I have a military dislocated lower back and heat works best for me. Everyone and every injury is different though.

There is not much difference between heat or cold. I use heat for muscular pain.

SEND YOUR PROPLE TO A DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC. The back issue the Rener Gracie had ( depending on how bad) may have been treated with out surgery and with less rehab time. I had a very similar injury and the way he described it was the same injury and my chiropractor got me right in about 2 months and not the surgery and 12 months that my MD recommended. The majority of these issues depending on their severity, could easily be treated by a good Chiropractor and it is much less expensive. Also if the issue is severe and actually needs surgery the chiropractor can diagnose for a much better price than the MD and also send you to the right people for care.

Just got back from training my buddy and I who are both white belts rolled from one side of the dojo to the other constantly reversing with sweeps we laughed because you know how when your rolling you don't think about which way the game is taking you. the professor thought it was funny but man does my neck hurt. I think I may have strained my neck. I just kept stretching it feels 95% better.

... nothing on finger and toes? Those are very common to break, know a few that have now disfigured finger from jitz and effects them daily. Even if you tape it, it's still messed up and hurts, especially on your dominate hand. Then hand operation, down time, etc.

To be honest.. the funny thing is that it really depends on the gym. Some gyms you get more thugs and morons and it breeds a certain culture of injuries while other gyms its the opposite. I would just try out a few gyms and see. Some gyms you wont get injured much and others you will

Maybe I'm a little late to this, but I've quite long ago done Judo for six years and now six years later I'm doing BJJ. Never had a single injury until now. I had dislocated my shoulder twice with PE and once in France on vacation. Now a fourth time while rolling. I let down on training altogether for the past year and so it was eventually to happen. But seriously PE is way more dangerous than this. Also I've dislocated my shoulder first week of this year and I'm about to go train again next week. I'm a little nervous, but having nice training partners I'll be fine. :-)

@@quasar4601 I tried Jiu-jitsu once and the very first time I got an injury. Maybe it wasn't a good gym because they didn't teach me how to fall, etc., even though the techniques they taught in my first lesson required that knowledge.

It really depends on the gym. Some gyms attract more normal guys and others more brutes
@MikeLibbie8 жыл бұрын
No doubt he may have herniated a disc, but a little later Rener said the disc came out of position. He may not have even realized he said it that way but just in case, it's worth knowing that discs can herniate or bulge, but they don't move or slip. It's common to hear the phrase, "slipped disc", but it's a misnomer.

i pulled my groin last year. it's still not at 100% but I've had to get very technical since then. Usually I would rely on my natural athleticism. I had to learn how to defend the guard pass in different ways on each side. If it didn't happen I'd probably be pushing full throttle but I'd less tricky. especially being 6'3" and 250 pounds no one expects me to move faster or slip their pressure like a small guy.

Number 1 single most important thing you can do after an injury is to see a GOOD chiropractor. Lots of chiropractors have licenses to practice but they are not always really good. Find one with many years of experience. It's very sad to see people go through surgery when they don't need it.

Not even 2 weeks after my 1st ever bjj train, and I got a popped rib from a guy - pain is very disconfortable, and I think I have to go see a doc, due to rib crackling noise when I breath deeply. Not saying it was the other guy's fault (he might not have had the notion), but maybe we should know/be shown a bit about this before even entering the mat for the 1st time.

Tonight was my fourth lesson in BJJ after joining a local gym 6 days ago. A new white belt is introduced to everyone and after warming up, we both get paired up together for drills. We start with a lesson of an armbar technique and a few different variations and ways to applicate. Whenever it was his turn he would explode through my hand grips and really extend and turn my arm once he had it locked in to the correct postion. I'm thinking: what the fuck is this guy doing; and I tell him that it's hurting. He says sorry, and lessens his energy and strength by about 10 percent, but it is still really straining. The sound of the buzzer ends that nightmare and now it's time for free rolls. I start with a blue belt and we end in a draw with no successful subs from either side! Really proud of that because she tried really hard. The next two times I went up against white belts and get tapped at the end of the rounds with none of my own subs being successful. My fourth roll I get paired with the brand new guy from before and I really dominate him for about 2 minutes with until I start to get gassed out from my previous exchanges and his constant explosive movements. He explode rolls me off of my mount from his chest and I end up on my back. He then sort of half stands up with on of his hands on my gi sleeve and dives in to me with an extended knee which I couldn't block and lands on my upper right chest. I immediately feel a burning/searing pain, and a shortness of breathe. I ask him to stop because it really hurts and he obliges. For context I weigh approx 62-65kg (skinny) and stand 5ft 11, he weighs approx 75-80kg (somewhat stocky) and is about 6ft 1. He says sorry again and we continue. I am still in pain and try to defend as he pulls me in to his guard and starts working for triangle around my neck, I cannot defend due to the pain from being pulled in to guard and the pressure of his legs moving up around my body. I tap and leave the mats clutching my chest after he locks the triangle in successfully. I get through the last roll of the night through pure grit against a blue belt whom I hadn't previously rolled with. I told him what happened, and even though he went a bit easy on me, he probably did more damage after trying some fancy techniques on me. I then walked 10 -15 minutes home after the lesson ends. Any time I inhale, exhale, stretch, turn or bend my upper body it is very painful. I am going in to whatever clinic I can for x-rays tomorrow to find out how bad the damage is. I love BJJ and want to start training everyday I love it so much, but now I know I won't be able to return to the mat and participate in the lessons I have to pay for because this idiot took it too far.
