Travis, I am 58, Judo black belt, and I assure you that your instructional videos display the best combination of thorough detail and down-to-earth moves that I still can execute. Well done, keep up the outstanding work!

I’m 50 and still play Kata Guruma. I just sit through on each attack and dump over the hip. Gone are the days of major standing Kata Guruma although still in my tool kit

Great versions, Travis. I am a 5' 5 1/2" recreational judoka and I have been super pussed at the IJF removal of the Kata Guruma and their suspect reasoning for it. Of all the Judo moves I excelled it, it was by far the greatest equalizer against larger, heavier and stronger opponents and it was sebitrseily and unfairly taken away. It literally took me years to develop the Yoko Guruma as a replacement neutralizer move but to this day I still practice the Kata Guruma.
@TravisStevensgrappling4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree and Yoko Garuma just isn't as strong of a through when compared to a classic Kata Gaurma!
@bronstet4 жыл бұрын
@Jay Lee Totally with you on this as the drop Ippon Seoi Nage is pretty much my toku waza along with the Yoko Guruma at the moment. 🙂 The Kata Guruma used to be it. One thing I do have to say though is that disallowing the move did force me to explore others so it wasn't all bad. 🙂

Now that is the judo principle of using uki”s off-balance, no unfair grabbing same side with both hands which I see a lot of on other judo videos, really like the way you make uki move and fit in on a throw!!

Awesome content. The cross grip one can also be IJF legal if you keep hold of sleeve instead of grabbing leg.

I love number 3 as it looks like it may work when they sense that I'm going for my favourite sumi gaeshi and posture back up and turn into me. I never thought about using sumi gaeshi in combo with kata guruma. It was always sumi, uchi mata, kouchi, ouchi mix for me. Great video like always!
@shakazulu65124 жыл бұрын
@Jay Lee I stopped training judo about the same time when they completely banned leg grabs and concentrated more on bjj as it seemed more open-minded and reminded me old time judo days when all the grip breaks were allowed and more newaza time allowed. I still love judo as an art but hate direction where it's going as a sport.
@shakazulu65124 жыл бұрын
I agree from the spectator point of view and to popularise the sport the new rules are better but I find them to limiting for the practitioner. I don't like that instead of looking for technical solutions to the problem they trying to fight it by more regulations. This kills players creativity and forces him to be more physical which again is more fun to watch for a random guy on the TV. I think jiu jitsu will change in the coming years as more and more guys realize they suck on their feet and try work on that. It just sucks that IJF stops high level guys you from competing in both judo and bjj and limits the way athletes can make their living. Travis is a prime example of that.

Awesome, As regards fireman 1-2-3 the set up are cool , could you demonstrate some variation with those entries (1-2-3) which would be legal under the current rules of judo ( what to do with the left hand instead of grapping the legs). Thanks in adavance.
@TravisStevensgrappling4 жыл бұрын
You can't really apply them to modern judo they do require the legs to be grabbed. But there are other versions that you can do they just aren't as strong.

@@TravisStevensgrappling Yes, very important factor. About 40 KG heavier. Lets take the Ogawa vs Koga example ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5CliqZtr6uIhck ). What techniques could Koga could have used to be more effective? My estimate is Ogawa is 115 KG and Koga roughly 75KG.

With the last judo-legal one how do you stop guy's right arm from creating separation and preventing you from getting underneath him? Is it just about throwing all your body weight against it or is there more into it?
@TravisStevensgrappling4 жыл бұрын
A lot of it has to do with timing. You really need to disguise the throw in order to get it to work. You don't see it often on the circuit but when you do it looks amazing.

@@TravisStevensgrappling would that 5th variation be the only one considered legal, or, would even that one be deemed illegal in the new rules by some strict judges/refs as your outside arm moves upwards against their legs helping sweep them over? Sucks that IJF rule changes have all but killed one of my fav throws... the single-arm Kata Guruma variations are ok if you're ever doing a follow-up to this one, but seem difficult to get in competition, although seems to work decently for me in randori just haven't personally, or seen many in the high-level competitions yet.
