My dad was law enforcement and my uncle a very talented martial artist. Between the two me and my brothers were raised to keep situational awareness when out and about. When I got married and my wife and i started having discussions about self defense she initially thought it was a terrible and difficult way to live. At least until i framed it as just doing what you do when you drive, with some modifications; get the big picture, keep your eyes moving, leave yourself an out. My dad taught me how to drive, he taught me how to pay attention. It's saved me from wrecks, it's saved me from people trying to hurt me. Paying attention is king.

I know, right!? Some would say it's a mental problem to be "paranoid" about the "perceived" evil that walks alongside us everywhere we go, but it is those same people who are most likely to be the recipients of evil's intentions more often than the vigilant. Semper Fi, by fellow jarhead.

I very much appreciate the focus on avoiding hyper-vigilance and paranoia. I avoid most self-defense, prepper, and gun channels on KZbin because of this. They come across as if they are just peddling fear. I have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control/a sound mind.

Total agreement on putting the phone away. When I was in college, I'd let people who were absorbed in their phones walk into me to try to make a point to them. They were completely oblivious. I don't even listen to music in public so I can be more aware of my surroundings. I wear a crappy watch so I can tell the time and I wait until I'm someplace safe to take out my phone. I'm not a fan of flashing my expensive gadgets.

I always had certain words for my kids that signaled that they had to stop what they were doing and follow directions no matter what, if, and or but. It let them know that I thought we was in trouble with surroundings or I needed to help someone somehow. It was alert time not necessary danger, but not time to act up because they had to follow instructions. I used it when my ex and I had fire fighting calls, in traffic and driving was bad, or whenever I didnt like my surroundings because people was being stupid and didnt need kids there. I never over use it but it gave them a chance to know it was extreme behave time because my focus couldn't be solely on them.

Here’s an interesting take on observational awareness…. Successful motorcycle riders survive based on situational awareness. We are hyper-aware of EVERYTHING happening around us. Some of us translate that into regular situations. Especially, those of us who have walked dangerous places WITHOUT a “force multiplier”. Some of us also know some specific defenses that are “more debilitating” than any grappling, but also work while in a grapple as well. Stay safe my friends!

Funny, although probably not the only person, I think your remark on carrying a spare mag in case of a malfunction is in response to a comment I made on your earlier video. FWIW, I only carry Wilson Combat mags. I've never had one fail, but like all mechanical devices, they can fail. Mags, since we frequently drop them in dirt or on gravel are susceptible to damage. If I had one go bad, of course I would throw it away, even at over $50 a pop for some mags. Like your car, we don't always know when the transmission or dish washer or magazine will fail. You say you've never seen it, like the one battlefield pick-up you saw for the first time. I believe you. I also know I've both seen it and experienced it in IDPA matches. Not real gun fights...I get it, but I'd expect competitors to be above average in caring for their gear and aware of their gear condition. Do you practice malfunction drills? I suspect you do. Every class I've seen teaches them. Why if risk is zero? In Poland, since my guns aren't here, I have to use a club gun, a Sig P320. Two of three mags are so worn, the slide will not lock back on empty. This is the gun/mag where I had a FTF. So, I do carry in case of a malfunction. Is it more likely to get used than a medical kit? No, and I think you are right, all those other things are more important, more likely to be used, but a 1911 mag is so small and light, who doesn't have the ability to carry one...even just as a rabbit's foot?

Just a funny story from an old man. In church, door closed as service is on. I hear the doors open. (not normal at this time) I turn and this guy comes in with a back back on. Sits behind me and begins searching his bag. I could not take it, I got up and stood one row back looking over his shoulder as he kept going through back pack. I was so ready to jump this young man. All at once a young lady jumps up and says,"Tommy havn't seen you in a while". So, I knew he was cool. Thanks to the lady for being aware! She later said it looked like I was ready to attack, and I was. Dude just had issues but looked the part.

Growing up with a Korean combat vet, my dad constantly told us to spread out walking to the car from the store. "One round will get us all." "Get your eyes off your shoes." "Get your eyes off the end of the hood." After 2 years of being shot at and surviving, I figured it wasn't bad advice. Thankfully, I took all those lessons to heart, and now that he's gone, I do the same thing with my family. I can't believe I see people getting gas, with the keys in the ignition and the door open staring at their phone, completely oblivious to their surroundings. Especially as desperate as this administration will make people, predators will gladly take your car with a full tank of gas.

Your example of children sucking up all their parents attention is a great example of need for situational awareness. Be aware of issue, so be more careful where you go when you have the children with you. Ie. Instead of not going to stupid places at stupid times with srptupid people - you only go to known low risk places at low risk times and when possible bring smart strong friends who can help protect your kids. My favorite companion was my lab, who raised my babies almost as much as I did. Would have youngest hold dogs leash so as to abide with local leash laws and simultaneously gain recall on my daughter since dog would come when called - bringing oblivious daughter. This topic brings stress in my life as I frequently observe obliviousness in my wife and my adult children. You do what you can and just keep on trying to teach... As I told my youngest when she whined about Mom treating her like a baby despite being a teenager - “You will always be our baby - even when you bring us grandchildren or is have to change our diapers. Get over it we love you more than life itself and you’ll have to live with it.” Now she’s adult and still my baby, so I’ll keep trying to instill a bit more awareness.

I say “justified use of a firearm”. The “big guy”, might have ‘caused a concussion, and followed up, by beating up the older guy while the older guy was down on the ground, stunned, and helpless. No one seems to be asking. “Is the push ‘step one of a mugging’? Is there any legal justification at all for the first push, at all? Is the one who pushed, too foolish to understand that the push could have resulted in a crippling injury to the older human? Why why why did the first attack need to be performed, at all? No one seems to be asking if, ‘the first push’ was a life threatening act for a older person. This is probably the precise reason the older man carried a firearm, in the first place. Why
