At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

Yep. I hate to admit it, but that’s pretty much spot on. We’ve owned about ten 70 series LandCruisers over the past 3 or so decades. The things you mention are mostly right, but they also have woeful brakes, terribly slow and non responsive steering that’s made worse by the narrow rear diff you mentioned. Most 4 cyclinders punch out more grunt and cost less to operate. The overall handling is poor. But, they are very reliable, tough, really easy to get in and out of, have the best dealer network and right now, they still have no direct competition. It’s amazing what you can get away with selling when there’s no one else to keep you honest.

I had a couple of Audi Q7s, BMW X5, VW Touareg and a 2013 Defender 110. That is what I drive now and it is the car I love the most. And like you it brings a smile to my face (and my daughters) every time. It is a heir loom and will never be sold. You look after it and it will look after you. And it is a conversation starter. I had so many chats with people who just came up to me to talk about the car and just had really nice conversation about the car and other things. Never had that with any other car in my life.

@@grantwatts681 , same here, I have owned my TD5 Defender for nearly twenty years and regularly tow my 3 ton off-road van around the country. The only repairs carried out in this time is replacing the original clutch and this was only because the pressure plate springs had lost tension through age. This is my forever vehicle and I would not swap it for a brand new 200 series. Most critics have never owned or used one for its intended purpose and know little about mechanical design for off road use.

@@peterhanson5042 absolutely, I here people all the time say how unreliable they are, well my TD5 has never stopped, ( never seen a LR on the side of the road, have you?) yes I've replaced pully's, rubbers etc but other than that some 4x4 damaged parts, but never stopped. The problem is the modern 4wder thinks his 4wd is the best because he chose it, my blah blah blah Patrol, my blah blah Cruiser, but these guys don't stop to think, all other 4x4's copied the landy, first full time 4x4 ( no jeep was a 2x4 with a transfer case), first ladder frame twist chassis, first coil-over, first deisel, first ABS, first SUV etc, patrol and cruiser argument, patrol ute 4x4 leaf spring 1050 kg, payload 100mm drop, cruiser 79 leaf sprung 1120kg payload, 100mm drop, nothing, Landrover Defender, coil-over, 130, 1650kg, see these guys just can't belive it, the chassis is superior because of the weight it holds, sure I expect modern 4x4 to be better, their new, but are they really better, so many, sensors, diodes, limp-mode, sure nice and lounge chair type, but better, nah, as for mechanics, so working on these cars are easier, I think not.

I'd add the G wagon (from the 2000's) to this list. Built to tackle any off road situation but priced like a well equipped house (depending on where such house is located). As such, the people who bought them never took them off road. And the solid front axle made them pretty much uncomfortable on the road, combined with the over 500HP it made from a twin turbo V12. And it didn't really do the luxury SUV part very well either. The cheaper GL/GLS had (still has) a better interior than the G wagon. If you're going to buy a Mercedes Benz SUV, just get the GL.

I had the old Defender for a while and it was nightmare scenario POS. The sad thing bout that, is, if bolted together properly and reliable, it could have been such a great thing. The pity with the new one, is Landrover had the opportunity to make a properly iconic, simple yet highly functional vehicle, but chose to make an over complicated and expensive new version that will no doubt have all the same problems, but at 3 times the price. Thanks for the video - loved it.

Nailed it! I have mates that froth over and spend 10's of thousands on their 4wd's. Constantly trying to convince me that I should get one. I have 2 arguments 1, As a mechanic, almost every model has some huge inbuilt, inherent engineering failure that just gets glossed over. When if even one of these faults was in a normal street car = it would be labelled a complete lemon, avoided at all costs and laughed off the market! Hilux dpf. Triton famous sludging. 79 series rear axle (monumental F up!). Everest false advertising offering cash back to hush people. Big dollar, big claim, lifted cars that are actually just soft roaders like the amarok. Heck even my dads old "go anywhere, anytime" defender throughout my child hood. Was bested by the most sinister of foes over and over. Dew! That's right. If it was ever left on grass over night. It would not start until you removed the distributor and dried it out. 2, every single model is sold to me like the jimny! "With a lift kit, lockers and some wheel/tyre combo it's great off road". But what is also now glossed over to compound this = even worse again on road(where it spends the majority of its life!). So they cost a premium for what say they can do. But then you have to spend thousands so they are actually able do what they what was sold on the packet as being able to do when you paid the initial premium? My pragmatic side just wishes they'd choose a purpose and be unapologetic about it. Make it pass basic road requirements but brilliant offroad. Or, make a brilliant tow rig. Awesome to drive normally, handles towing on gravel roads, hills of wet grass with ease but isn't that great for sand or rough trails(rock crawling).

It's ridiculous how much money people spend to get the 79 series up to an acceptable standard. Yes they are great offroad, but only if you count a mine site or farm as 'off road'. They are meant to get beat up for utilitarian purposes, like a diesel tractor. For touring just get a 200 series or Y62 Patrol. Arguably just as reliable in the outback and million times as comfortable. For tough tracks just get an older 80/100 series, Y61 Patrol or Wrangler. Dollar for dollar, much better off upgrading one of these. You could build two of these up to comp level, for the same price of undoing the flaws on a 79 series (e.g. coils, track, power etc).

(I’ve had transmission over temp cause ke to stop and wait for it to cool down) when dragging my camper trailer up some steep bush tracks… and I’ve had some brake fade coming back down… I think if VW had slapped a low range on the back of that auto it would have been quite a weapon in all aspects…

I looove my 79. Yes they are expensive and the interior is outdated, but for most if not all the 79 owners out there, we don't buy it for the luxury or sound system, we buy it for its engineering ingenuity, you would struggle to find another 4WD as reliable and tough as a LandCruiser (you see some of the older ones with insane k's racked up). Mine (GXL) came stock with both front and rear lockers, insane amounts of torque and you can't beat that V8 rumble, yes even the 2017+ models with the DPF.. I agree, the wheel track issue is annoying, however, you don't really need to correct it for most use-cases, however, would recommend if towing or if you do a lot of sand driving maybe.. You can always correct it with rear offset rims as well as a cheaper option.. As for cost to get it offroad capable, well, you can take it straight from the showroom into the bush if you really wanted to, I did with mine (well after wearing in the engine a little), took it straight to Vic high country haha, didn't miss a beat.. They come standard with All Terrains, fairly certain most of the utes on the market come with road tyres for some absurd reason. The cost breakdown for my 79: $84,300 on road with ARB front bar, side rails and side steps $4600 3.9kg GVM Upgrade $900 for the snorkel $1850 for upgraded 33" tyres $7000 for the canopy About $100k all up... Weight, fully loaded - I sit around 3.3 tonne Of course, you can go crazy with upgrades and spend big dollars, but that is the same for every 4WD owner out there, just depends on what you are comfortable with. You don't need to spend the quoted $30k to get it offroad capable, they are more than capable straight out of the showroom. Fuel economy, again, don't buy it for the fuel economy, it's all about the V8, the engineering and that you can make it what you want it to be, however, if you want it stock, you can keep it that way and still have a load of fun offorad. If you have any questions, happy to provide any insights, cheers all

You are absolutely right, the problem is, most of the people are ok to pay more than $30k premiums, for stardust and prestige of owning a luxury car with shiny toys, but when it comes to paying it for the relief of being in a very reliable and maybe outdated car, the average consumer can't get the idea. As reliability is what you are paying premium for, 79's could only have been overrated if many were reported to breakdown unexpectedly... I think deep down it's a psychological issue, maybe lack of self esteem. It's ok to pay for what people think of you, but it's not ok to pay for what you feel for yourself???

The biggest issue with the 79 is how much money you have to drop into one before they're any good. Like the reviewer said, if you're happy to drop $30k in upgrades to fix the engine power, suspension, and gearbox, it's a great 4WD, but until then it's a 1990s car selling for 2021 prices.

@@KarlEller it’s funny u mention that. The 79 is good from stock. Here in Uganda, they aren’t modified at all and still popular with NGOs. They’re tanks. And tour operators just modified the sitting to fit in more tourists. They last with not much maintenance.

You guy's have hit the nail right on the head. The only one that I might slightly disagree with, is the NEW DEFENDER. Ok it may not be like the old one and full of tech and we need to wait a little longer to access it's reliability, but at the moment i think it's a very good 4WD. But on the rest, you are spot on and i was saying to myself, the 79 series LC had to be number one and it was. Don't get me wrong, when it's fully modified it's an awesome off roader/tourer, but when you look at it off the show room floor, it's just plain crap. The price Toyota is charging for these 40 year old design is just a plain rip off. There is so many design faults, and many many other components that need to be changed or upgraded is beyond a joke. By the time you have finished the full mod, it will have cost you $200,00 or more, just ridiculous

I had a 75 series. The only modification I done was fit 34” tyres on it and use to take it up in the back blocks of Victoria, up in the mountains, and never had an issue. Originally I had a 300$ hand winch, turfer style, from ARB to pull me out. I put a PTO winch on it later and that thing would pull Christ off the cross.

The inclusion of the 79 series is a surprise. Talk to a farmer about why they buy them and put 700,000km on the clock in dust and mud without problems. Some of the farmers in north west NSW are doing 90% unsealed. The bitumen only starts when you're 20 minutes from town. They can't be too bad. They might seem like they drive like a tractor for those who don't actually drive tractors, but they are still better than a real tractor for those who actually drive tractors.

As a mechanic that professionally fits 4x4 suspension and components for one of australias biggest 4x4 part supplers and a classic defender driver I cant see why it makes the list... the chassis was designed in the 70s..... everything else here is modern, everything else has to be modded extensively to get it to climb a pebble, while a good set of muddies is you need for a car designed in the 70s.... that you can pickup for 15k for a cheap example..... the 79 starts at 80k..... I want to see a 79 series double its value in 5 years... thats whats happened to the classic defender. my 33 year old 110 perentie could tackle more then most of the vehicles on the list modded or not, yes it feels like driving a 1950s tractor on the road... but thats why I love it and thats why its so good off road because it is a tractor.. pto and all

Love your list and couldn't agree more. Was partial to the new Defender but, all those aforementioned issues aside, it also possesses the load space of a pigmy's sock drawer. I've never understood Australian's fascination with the Dreadful 70 series. To describe the road handling of that top-heavy, narrow wheel-based horror show as frightening doesn't describe the sheer terror properly enough. Not to mention that for an engine the size of four small ships the lack of oomph is astonishing as is its thirst for fuel. And how the average fat bogan Aussie fits his elbows inside that cabin (which itself hasn't been modified since it was first designed during Gallipoli) is a lesson in contortion that only clowns in a Russian circus could be envious of.
