The problem is that the show has switched writers over the seasons. For example, the team who wrote the XY anime was replaced by new people who are writing the Sun and Moon anime. That's why Ash seems to get amnesia when he goes to a new region. Sure there's things like Ash's Charizard coming back for the Best Wishes anime, but the little things are lost in the switches between writing teams over time. Which is a huge shame.

Pelle Potatis Ash is the face of the shows for sure, but honestly Pokemon as a brand is so strong that I doubt a new main character would hurt the series overall. They could make a new series about the formation of the Pokemon League, or even one kind of akin to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon which focuses solely on the pokemon. Nintendo could do anything they put their mind to, they just choose to coast and have nothing of importance ever happen in the anime.

"..given away.." points to Aipom.. Aipom was an awesome pokemon but Ash didn't give it away.. It was a trade for Dawn's buizel ..and It was done because Aipom had class and Buizel didn't! haha well Aipom always showed interest in contests and Buizel was far too macho for them. so the trade made sense, it not only made those pokemon happier, it made things better for both Ash and Dawn as they got pokemon that were more suited to their own interests.

I can remember once Ash and Clair (final gym leader of jhoto region) fought against a Dragonite (whose trainer left it a long time ago, and it became furious for some reason), using Charizard and Dragonair, and managed to pacify it. Ash has adopted charmendor and chimchar as their trainer left them. I just didn't understand why the hell Ash didn't adopt that poor creature. I believe Dragonite is the ultimate powerhouse for any trainer due to it's high abilities and intelligence. May be Ash loves to take more challenge, may be he loves to defeat other trainers using his small , limited ability owned, not a single evolution owned Pokemons.

They need to make a movie where ash is needing to do some growth, and let's say for plot the villain captures Ash's mom (and dad too why not) So throughout the film he begins to doubt himself because he couldn't save his family. Eventually there's a deal to where ash "alone" comes and rescues his family. (Assuming each trainer has a max of 6 pkmn a time) he'd be fighting a literal small army. So ash gets the bright idea to instead of doing this he leaves, and gets backup. A LOT OF BACKUP. Ash (because of plot) gains him the capability to go to every region he's been too in the past and find and obtain his released or pkmn he left behind. (He even gets a hold of all the current gen's main power ups. Such as a mega stone. Z crystals. And a Gigantimax ring) So he returns about a week later "alone" and suddenly another small army of pkmn surround ash which happen to be the best pokemon ash has trained and caught over the series as a whole. So it becomes ash and his entire legacy vs this villain who attempts to take everything and possibly more from him. *Que awesome small pokemon war where each pokemon gets a chance to shine. AND I MEAN EACH AND EVERY ONE** I'm sure the writers can finish it off lol.
