Happy to see Warren here. As a death metal and grind drummer, I have a lot of respect for the man. And learn much from him. Gear Gods is rad as well, keep up the great content guys!

Thanks Gear Gods for this video. Easily one of my favorite videos from you guys and I appreciate the discussion you had with Warren Huart. I felt as if I was listening back to previous conversations with friends and just talk about music. That's why some of us are here; for the love of music.

Thanks for the great comment! Trey rules! He's extremely knowledgable and knows his schnizzle! So it was an easy conversation to have! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

I think the combination of Opeth with Steven Wilson really nailed all aspects of this in their early 2000s albums

I think harmony and structure are the two things a lot of metal bands skimp out on. They're either doing basic generic melodeath with pop song structures or incoherent riff salad. I think a band that has mastered the art of structuring a song is Moonsorrow. Their average song length is around 15 minutes yet the way they incorporate memorable musical themes and structure their songs in a way that ebb and flow make them masterful. Definitely not what I'd consider "pop" songwriting though.

Love the intentional leaving out of 3rds on the guitar to make all the 3'rd in the voice pop. I had never considered such a thing.

right, Brian Eno's those "Oblique Strategies" cards say things like "half the tempo of the song" or "switch the interment" or something to stir the songs.

I'm writing a lot of music lately and the one tip that I want to do more of is adding more dynamics. I haven't sung on any of my tunes either, but when I do I'll remember to mess with that 3rd. I do mess with the 3rd all the time when I solo. I teach music during the day and write it at night. Thanks for the insight Warren Huart. I appreciate it. Take care and have an awesome weekend. Sam from the Machiwoomiapoo channel. :)

First Black Sabbath album is the reason why we started our doom band The Bottle Doom Lazy Band & i actually checking all their albums i missed from 80s & 90s. That's the feeling i want to bring in my grindcore band & almost all new extreme metal bands missed,

the temperament of guitars makes 3rd really difficult to tune nicely with a lot of distortion. avoiding them on guitars and filling them in on other instruments works great!

So many bands think you need to be fast, heavy, brutal, and have vocals that show emotional intensity and power, and that you need to be pushing all of those things as much as possible all the time. What they don't realize is that fast only sounds fast if contrasted with other tempos. Heavy and brutal all the time does not sound heavy and permanently brutal jyst sounds monotonous where nothing feels truly brutal. And worst of all, vocals that are screamed all the time, don't have any intensity at all, it just sounds like someone with no confidence and nothing inside except feeling desperate to sound intense, desperate to sound noticeable. Unfortunately, it's like being around that person that just tries too hard all the time. Nobody can stand being around that person for very long because they just try too hard all the time. And speaking musically, when the verse is screamed at the top of your voice, how do you step up the intensity for the chorus, or for the bridge, or over the breakdown? How do you create drama? Seriously, how are you create that wow moment where the vocalist just blows you away with that one word being delivered with all the intensity drawn from every part of their soul, putting their heart into it. If it's being screamed all the time you'll never notice it. And vocals that are screened all the time, most people, and I'm talking about metalhead lifers like myself, just try to tune them out.

Tip #6?: "heavy" has nothing to do with distortion, speed, chunk, tuning, etc - it's has to do with how it's written. Joni Mitchell has an entire catalogue of heaviness that CRUSHES most "metal" bands today.

Never got the bvb hate to be honest. These older elitist dudes who are so far up kiss's arse they can smell what lip balm Gene Simmons' is wearing seem to have this irrational hatred towards Black Veil Brides when, let's be brutally honest here, are just a more modern Kiss. What is the actually difference between the 2 bands?
